To all persons charged with failure to provide proof of insurance:

If you were insured to drive the motor vehicle you were ticketed for on the date and time of said ticket, the City
Attorney may dismiss your case, with the payment of a court fee, if you provide a signed
letter stating you were insured to drive that vehicle on the date and time of the ticket.

Insurance cards, bills, declarations pages or any other documentation other than a letter from the
insurance agent are NOT acceptable.

Be advised there are two different ways to be covered to drive a vehicle.

1) If you were driving your vehicle, then an example letter that meets the requirements of the ordinance
that allows the City Attorney to dismiss your case is as follows:

(SAMPLE LETTER IF DRIVING YOUR VEHICLE)

Insurance Company Letterhead

(Date)

This letter is to confirm that (your name) was insured while driving (specific vehicle listed on ticket) on
(date and time of ticket), the date and time he / she received the ticket. This insurance met the State of
Colorado requirements for liability coverage.

2) If you were driving someone else’s vehicle, then the City Attorney would need to know that the
vehicle owner’s insurance policy (often referred to as permissive coverage), or your own policy (often
referred to as a broad form policy), covered you to drive the vehicle on the date and time of the ticket.
You do not need to be named on the policy. The City simply needs to know that had there been an
accident while you were driving, the accident would have been covered. An example letter in this case
is as follows:

(SAMPLE LETTER IF DRIVING SOMEONE ELSE’S VEHICLE)

Insurance Company Letterhead

(Date)

This letter is to confirm that (your name) was insured while driving (specific vehicle listed on ticket) on
(date and time of ticket), the date and time he / she received the ticket. This insurance met the State of
Colorado requirements for liability coverage. The policy in question provides coverage for anyone who
drives the vehicle with the owner’s permission and the above-named driver was not excluded from
coverage under the terms of the policy.

The letter can be provided to the City Attorney by email at. Please send the letter at least one week before your
scheduled court appearance. Please include your name and summons number in the email you send. The
summons number is on the front of your ticket and begins with an “E” or “Y”.
