CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents the Background of the Study, Statement of the Problem, Hypothesis

of the Study, Significance of the Study, Scope and Delimitation of the Study, Definition of Terms

and Research Paradigm

Background of the Study

Guava leaves refer to the leaves of the guava plant, scientifically known as Psidium

guajava. Guava is a tropical fruit tree native to Central America and is cultivated in many

tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. The leaves of the guava tree are typically oval-

shaped with a pointed tip and are glossy green in color.

Guava leaves have been used traditionally for various medicinal purposes due to their

rich phytochemical content. They contain compounds such as flavonoids, tannins, phenolic

compounds, and essential oils, which are believed to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory,

antimicrobial, and insecticidal properties. In terms of insect repellency, guava leaves are of

interest due to their natural compounds that can deter insects like mosquitoes. Extracts from

guava leaves have been studied for their potential as natural insect repellents, including

formulations for mosquito coils, sprays, and lotions.

Guava leaves on mosquito coil is a must because it has a lot of benefits. This will have a

big impact on the society and will improve the lives of many and all of these will be proven

throughout this study.

Statement of the Problem

This study will aim to find out the effectiveness of guava leaves (Psidium

guajava) as a natural mosquito coil repellent.

Specifically, will aim to answer the following questions:

1. Is the natural mosquito coil made from guava leaves (Psidium guajava) effective in

repelling mosquitoes in terms of:

a. Efficacy

b. Duration of Protection

2. Is guava leaf coil considered effective and acceptable by users in repelling mosquitoes?

Hypothesis of the Study

H0: Guava leaves (Psidium guajava) is not effective as natural mosquito coil repellents.

Ha: Guava leaves (Psidium guajava) is effective as natural mosquito coil repellents.

Significance of the Study

This study will be of great help to people, especially young people who have no idea

about the diseases mosquitoes might bring or the disadvantages of using mosquito coils. The

purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of guava leaves (Psidium guajava) as a

natural mosquito coil repellent. Through the experiments that I will be conducted, I will

determine the effectiveness of guava leaves (Psidium guajava) as a natural alternative

mosquito coil repellent. This will help a lot to achieve the objectives of this study.
For Environmental Health Workers, the findings of the study will provide basic

knowledge and information on the components of guava leaves (Psidium guajava) as a

natural mosquito coil repellent. It will help environmental health experts find alternative

ways to reduce mosquito populations in the community and avoid mosquito-borne diseases.

For the Community, this study will provide a natural and economical mosquito coil

made from guava leaves (Psidium guajava). This research will help reduce Zika virus,

dengue fever, and malaria cases in the community, particularly in mosquito-infested areas.

For the Teachers, the result of this study will give them advice to make sure that all the

corners of their rooms, especially their comfort rooms, are clean. This will give a lesson on

why teachers should be more caring with their students and serve as a guide for their students

to live healthy and mosquito-disease-free lives.

For the Parents, they will have more knowledge about the diseases that mosquitoes can

give to their children. This research will give them instructions on how to create an herbal

mosquito coil that they can use inside their house. This will also serve as a warning so that

they can pay more attention and care for their children completely so that their future will not

be ruined just because of a small bite by a dangerous fly.

For Future Researchers, the information and data gathered by previous researchers will

be helpful to serve as a guide for future researchers who plan to conduct further

investigations related to this study. This study will provide ideas, data, information, and

broad knowledge.

Scope and Delimitations of the Study

The main goal of this study is to make a natural mosquito coil repellent from guava

leaves (Psidium guajava) and to determine its effectiveness. This study is solely on

mosquitoes; it is not recommended for other insects such as cockroaches, houseflies, moths,

fleas, and many others. It will be conducted from October 2023 until December 2023 in

Barangay 22 Nagbacalan, Paoay, Ilocos Norte.

Definition of Terms

Efficacy- The ability of a mosquito coil to achieve its intended purpose, such as repelling

or killing mosquitoes, measured under controlled conditions.

Duration of Protection- The length of time during which a mosquito coil provides

effective protection against mosquitoes after it is activated.
