angle of refraction of this ray? [1]
2. Why do different colours get separated when white light passes through a prism? [1]
3. How does the valency of elements vary i) in going down a group ii) on going from left to right in a
period of the periodic table? [1]
4. The sun is visible to us about two minutes before actual sunrise and about two minutes after actual
sunset. Give reason. [2]
5. “Sodium hydrogencarbonate is a basic salt”. Justify the statement. How is it converted into washing
soda? Explain. [2]
6. On adding a drop of barium chloride solution to an aqueous solution of sodium sulphate, white
precipitate is obtained.
a) Write a balanced chemical equation of the reaction involved.
b) What other name can be given to this precipitation reaction? [2]
7. a) An image 2/3 of the size of the object is formed by a convex lens at a distance of 12cm from it.
Find the focal length of the lens.
b) Light enters from air to a medium ‘X’. Its speed in medium‘X’becomes1.5× 108m/s. The speed of
light in air is 3x108m/s. Find the refractive index of medium ‘X’. [3]
8. An object is kept at a distance of 18cm, 20 cm, 22cm and 30cm, from a lens of power +5D.
i) In which case or cases would you get a magnified image?
ii) Which of the magnified image can we get on a screen?
iii) List two widely used applications of a convex lens. [3]
9. A student wants to project the image of a candle flame on a screen 80cm in front of a mirror by
keeping the candle flame at a distance of 20cm from its pole.
(i)Which type of mirror should the student use?
(ii)Find the distance between the object and its image.
(iii)Draw a ray diagram to show the image formation in this case and mark the distance between
the object and its image. [5]
