031/1 PHYSICS 1

Time: 03:00 HRS Tuesday, 16th May 2023 p.m.


Instructions

1. This paper consist of sections A, B and C with a total of eleven (11) questions.
2. Answer all questions in sections A and B and two (2) questions from section C.
3. Section A carries sixteen (16) marks, section B fifty four (54) marks and section C carries
thirty (30) marks.
4. Non-programmable calculators and mathematical tables may be used during an examination
5. Mobile phones are not allowed in the examination room
6. All other examination rules as per NECTA EXAMINATION GUIDELINES are applicable.
7. Write your Examination Number on every page of the answer sheet.
8. In time of need, the following important constants are freely available for use;
i). Acceleration due to gravity, g = 10m/s2
ii). Density of water = 1.0g/cm3
iii). Pie, π = 3.14

(b) Briefly explain the two common classes of magnetic materials and mention one

4. (a) You have been appointed as an expert in measurement to determine the density of a
Gemstone extracted at Chunya DC mine sites. How will you accomplish this task?

(b) A man has 2m3 of concrete delivered to his home and he needs to carry it down in a wheel
barrow. If each barrow load weighs 2500N. How many trip will he have to make?

5. (a) The figure 1 below shows a thermostat used to control the temperature of water in a hot
water tank (or like that of an electric iron). X and Y form a bimetallic strip and Z is an
insulator.

(ii) Explain the mode of action of hydraulic brakes. (03 Marks)

(b) (i) Elaborate the observation that when a mirror is cleaned with a dry cloth in a
very dry atmosphere, the dust from the cloth stick to the glass. (02 Marks)
(ii) Three capacitors of values 2µF, 3µF, and 6µF are connected in parallel to a
given circuit. What will be the capacitance of single chip capacitor to replace the
above combination? (02 Marks)

SECTION C (30 Marks)

9. (a) An effort of 50N is applied to the handle of the screw jack of a car. The handle is 15cm
long and there are 25 pitches in a centimeter. Determine the load rose if efficiency of
the machine is 60%. (06 Marks)
(b) Distinguish between Mutual induction and self-induction as they are used in
electromagnetism. (04 Marks)
(c ) The hydrometer is immersed in liquid A and then in liquid B. The extent to which it sinks
in liquid B is less than liquid A. What conclusion can you draw from such observation?
(05 marks)

10. (a) How long will a passenger sitting near the window of an SGR train travelling at
360km/h see a local train passing by in opposite direction with a speed of 100km/h? The
length of the local train is 315m. (Give the answer in seconds) (05 Marks)
(b) A Gieger Muller tube records some count rates even though there is no radioactive source
in the tube, state any three possible causes of those counts in a tube. (03 Marks)

(c) Boats use “SONAR” to detect the depth of water in the seas or lakes. A sonar pulse sent
out by a boat arrives back after 3 seconds. If the speed of sound in water is 1500m/s. How
deep is the lake/seas? (07 Marks)

11. (a) An object 20mm high stands on the axis of a concave mirror of focal length of 100mm
and at a distance of 300mm from the mirror. Draw a scale diagram to find the position,
size and nature of the image produced. (06 Marks)
(b) Explain why car headlamps have parabolic metal reflector. (03 Marks)
(c) Copy the diagrams and complete them to show the approximate path of the rays as they
enter and emerge from the media shown. (06 Marks)
