Classification of

Flora and Fauna

Understanding Different Species
Categories
Presented by: Advaith
Introduction
● Flora and Fauna refer to plant and animal life respectively.
● The classification of species is essential for biodiversity
conservation and understanding ecological relationships.
● This presentation covers six categories of species:
Normal, Endangered, Vulnerable, Rare, Endemic, and
Extinct.
Normal Species
● Definition: Species that are
commonly found in their
natural habitat and have a
stable population.
● Examples: Oak trees,
sparrows.
● Characteristics: Abundant in
numbers, not facing
significant threats.
Endangered Species
● Definition: Species that are at a very high risk of extinction in the near future.
● Examples: Bengal tiger, Blue whale.
● Characteristics: Facing threats like habitat destruction, climate change, poaching.
● Conservation Status: Listed in the IUCN Red List as Endangered.
Vulnerable Species
● Definition: Species that are at a high risk of becoming endangered unless circumstances
threatening their survival and reproduction improve.
● Examples: Giant Panda, African Elephant.
● Characteristics: Declining population, habitat fragmentation.
● Conservation Status: Listed in the IUCN Red List as Vulnerable.
Rare Species
● Definition: Species with small populations that are not currently endangered or vulnerable
but are at risk.
● Examples: Snow Leopard, Madagascan Moon Moth.
● Characteristics: Small population size, often localized.
● Conservation Needs: Monitoring and habitat protection.
Endemic Species
● Definition: Species that are found in a specific geographic area and nowhere else in the
world.
● Examples: Lemurs of Madagascar, Kangaroos in Australia.
● Characteristics: Highly specialized habitat requirements.
● Conservation Importance: Protecting unique biodiversity.
Extinct Species
● Definition: Species that no longer exist anywhere on Earth.
● Examples: Dodo, Passenger Pigeon.
● Characteristics: No living individuals left.
● Causes: Habitat loss, overexploitation, introduced species.
Conclusion
● Understanding the classification of species helps in their conservation.
● Efforts should be made to protect endangered and vulnerable species to maintain
biodiversity.
● Awareness and action are key to preventing further extinctions.
