Chapter 3

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY

This chapter present the methodology used in the study, data sources,

research processes, instrumentation, and statistical analysis of the data

acquired.

Methodology

The researchers utilized developmental research methods. This approach

will be used to build the suggested technology, which will comprise conception,

planning, and design; material and equipment preparation; prototyping; testing;

and revision. The objective of this process was to present each stage of product

manufacturing and assembly (including planning and designing) as well as data

collection procedures (including testing, prototyping, and data analysis) in order

to arrive at an efficient design that the researchers formulated within the study's

parameters.

The core design of the project was to use an Arduino device that could

water the plants automatically, which would sense the humidity, temperature, and

moisture. The sensor measures soil moisture and sends the data and

parameters to the Arduino, which operates the pump according to (IRJET 2020);

and if the level of soil moisture drops below a certain value, the Arduino sends a

high signal to the relay module which then runs the water pump and certain

amount of water is delivered to the plant.

During development, the design idea not only meets the necessity of

automatically watering the plants, but it also keeps track of a number of other
environmental conditions. In order to offer empirical measures of how much

water was accessible or discharged, the students used a sensor to determine the

water level of the water source. (Elder 2018)

RESEARCH DESIGN

To design and fabricate the “AUTOMATED PLANT WATERING SYSTEM

UTILIZED BY ARDUINO”, The researchers created a Research Method

Workflow that outlined the step-by-step method as well as a systematic guide to

the processes involved in product creation and study execution. These steps

comprised Requirements and Constraints Assessment, Conceptualization and

Designing, Assembly, Testing, and Results Evaluation.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURES

Throughout its implementation, the project made use of two key data

sources. First, the major source of data is the analysis of the findings obtained

after the testing and data gathering stages, during which the product was

submitted to a series of experimental set-ups to evaluate different parameters

mentioned in the objectives in Chapter 1. Second, there are secondary sources.

Data was gathered from books, journals, periodicals, magazines, theses, and the

internet, as well as unpublished sources mentioned and provided in Chapter 2 as

part of the relevant literature and research. By combining these two data

sources, the researchers would be able to determine the standard level of

acceptability in terms of functionality and effectivity of the product in line with the

research study’s objectives.

The system ensures accuracy in soil moisture monitoring by employing sensors that measure soil moisture levels and relay this data to the Arduino. The Arduino then processes this information to control the water pump, activating it when the moisture level falls below a predetermined threshold. Consequently, the use of sensors is central to maintaining optimal soil moisture levels, thereby automating the watering process efficiently .

The system enhances traditional plant watering methods by integrating sensors and Arduino technology, which automates the process based on real-time data on environmental conditions such as soil moisture. This advancement reduces manual intervention, optimizes water usage, and ensures consistent plant care, thereby offering a more efficient and sustainable approach to plant watering .

Prototyping and testing phases were integral as they allowed researchers to empirically assess each component of the system. Testing the prototype under various conditions enabled the identification of inefficiencies and operational shortcomings, which informed necessary revisions and optimizations. This iterative refinement ensured higher precision and reliability of the final product .

The researchers employed developmental research methods, focusing on conception, planning, and design, preparation of materials and equipment, prototyping, testing, and revision. This methodology was pivotal in effectively assembling and manufacturing the product, as it facilitated empirical analysis at each stage of development. These methods allowed researchers to iteratively refine the automated plant watering system, ensuring its efficiency and reliability in sensing humidity, temperature, and moisture to operate the water pump accordingly .

Researchers gathered data through two primary means. Firstly, experimental setups tested various system parameters, aligning with the study's objectives. Secondly, secondary data sources, including literature from books, journals, and theses, provided contextual insights. Together, these data sources enabled comprehensive evaluation of the system's functionality and effectiveness in meeting the research objectives .

The design and fabrication process involved defining requirements and constraints, conceptualization, detailed designing, assembly of components, and rigorous testing followed by results evaluation. Each stage was methodically structured to ensure comprehensive integration of sensors and control systems, culminating in a reliable and efficient automated watering solution .

The main objectives of incorporating sensors were to automate the watering process by accurately detecting environmental conditions, such as soil moisture, temperature, and humidity. The system effectively met these goals by using the sensor data to trigger the Arduino-controlled pump, ensuring that plants received the necessary amount of water autonomously and efficiently .

The research methodology workflow included requirements and constraints assessment, conceptualization and designing, assembly, testing, and results evaluation. This systematic guide facilitated step-by-step product development and execution of the research study, ensuring that each aspect was methodically addressed for the successful creation of the Automated Plant Watering System .

Utilizing both primary and secondary data sources was crucial because primary data from experimental setups provided direct evidence of the system's performance. In contrast, secondary data offered broader context and insights into existing standards and research. This combination allowed for a comprehensive evaluation of functionality and informed iterative improvements to meet objectives effectively .

The automated plant watering system addresses environmental conditions by monitoring soil moisture, temperature, and humidity, allowing it to adjust water supply dynamically. This capability implies potential applications in agricultural settings where precision watering can enhance crop yields, conserve water, and adapt to climatic variability. Its adaptability and efficiency could revolutionize sustainable agricultural practices .
