Dear Sir,
Rockwell Automation appreciates that Petrobras Company will be making a significant investment in
the Allen-Bradley® Logix control platform for current and future programs. The Logix control architecture
is the core of our Programmable Automation Controller family, which includes ControlLogix ® controllers,
ControlLogix I/O, CompactLogix™ controllers, CompactLogix I/O, GuardLogix® controllers, Compact
GuardLogix controllers and their respective I/O products.
The Logix control platform and I/O is designed with an emphasis on software portability. The hardware
will continue to migrate to newer technology that offers better performance, ease of use and more
features while maintaining compatibility with software and firmware. We encourage our customers to
use the new controllers for designs and installations as they provide improved performance and better
functionality to their application needs. When Rockwell Automation introduces new hardware products,
we focus on form, fit and function compatibility with the previous version of that product, so that your
engineering investments are preserved and your impact to uptime is minimized, even if an individual
catalog item’s hardware may see a change.
The Logix control platform, which began shipment in 1997, is in the Active stage of the product
lifecycle. Rockwell Automation has a long history of supporting product families and making them
available for sale, in some cases, for more than thirty years. Similarly, Rockwell Automation has a
major ongoing investment in the Logix control architecture to help ensure our customer’s investments in
the Logix control platform are protected for even longer.
Development and enhancement of an Integrated Architecture® system, such as this, is a very large
undertaking requiring thousands of person-years of engineering effort. This investment includes:
Over US$800M invested in Logix in the last 20 years
Over 400 globally located development and commercial engineers who support technology
developments and integrate customer functional requirements into the Logix control platform
including hardware and design software

The next generation high performance ControlLogix 5580 was introduced in 2015 and the
CompactLogix 5380 family of controllers followed in 2016. In 2020, ControlLogix 5580 High
Availability and 5580 and 5380 process controllers were introduced. Most recently,
environmentally hardened controllers and I/O, have been brought into our XT portfolio. Beyond
2020, the Logix platform will continue to be extended, providing additional capabilities in
security, process, safety and edge computing.
The next generation high performance Compact 5000™ I/O was introduced in 2015 to support
5380 and 5480 controllers. Compact 5000 Safety I/O followed in 2019 to support the Compact
Logix 5380 controllers. Beyond 2020, the I/O platform will continue to be extended providing
additional capabilities to serve both discrete and process.
While we cannot predict or promise the lifespan of a specific Logix catalog number, our current plan is
to have a Logix catalog that can solve your existing application through at least 2040. This may be the
current product or a future product within the product family that can solve the application.
Helping protect our customer’s investment is a significant reason we have an installed base of more
than two million programmable controllers.
A thorough review of the lifecycle of existing equipment and spares inventory will help assess
modernization needs and identify the most contemporary Rockwell Automation products. Options
available to help include:
Product Lifecycle Status tool: Our online product lifecycle status tool can help you determine the
lifecycle status of existing equipment. The tool can be accessed at
http://www.rockwellautomation.com/global/solutions-services/capabilities/migration-
solutions/product-search/overview.page?
Installed Base Evaluation™ Service Agreement: Rockwell Automation offers an evaluation of an
installed base with lifecycle analysis.
Once it is determined that products are to be discontinued, Rockwell Automation typically provides
advance notice to customers that includes the expected last date of sale, pending component
availability. This gives customers time to plan for migration to a modified or more advanced component.
Furthermore, it is our practice to continue to support products after they are removed from general sale.
Once a product moves from Active to Active Mature or beyond, the options for support usually include:
Repair/remanufacture services: It is our goal to support products for at least five years from the date
they are removed from general sale. On occasion, commercial provisions (for example, availability
of components) may dictate unexpected discontinuation of remanufacturing services. Where repair
or remanufacturing services are a concern, Rockwell Automation offers a Lifecycle Extension
Agreement, as described below.

Lifecycle Extension Agreement: Rockwell Automation offers a Lifecycle Extension Agreement to
minimize the risk of operating legacy Rockwell Automation hardware while migration plans to newer
technologies are prepared. For products covered by a Lifecycle Extension Agreement, you receive
remote and on-site support for discontinued products, access to a “repair reservation” for
discontinued products and access to Rockwell Automation owned legacy parts. In other words, this
service allows you to ask that we hold for your benefit the components you expect to use in
remanufacturing during the term of the contract.
Migration Services: Rockwell Automation continues to develop and manufacture the newest
technologies in the marketplace. We would like to assist you with migrating to our new
technologies. Rockwell Automation offers migration strategies including conversion and selection
tools, consultation, planning and training services to guide you through the process of upgrading
your systems at a pace that makes sense for your application and budget.
Rockwell Automation is committed to support your system configuration with a Logix controller including
spare parts and services, pending commercial provisions.
I hope that this brief correspondence demonstrates our ongoing commitment to the Logix control
platform product line.
Sincerely,
Dan DeYoung
