Fabric Introduction
Fabric Introduction
course
The first post of this year makes us very excited since it is a new section in our
blog Lalio Post . This section entitled Crochet, everything you need to know , is
intended to be an initial guide for those who want to learn this activity. I clarify
that I am not an expert crocheter but I will gladly share what I know and what I
learn. In this post, I write the key points that I myself would look for when learning
to knit.
If you are looking for how to crochet for beginners or step-by-step crochet
tutorials (yes, those short and hypnotizing videos that you have saved in the
Pinterest app ), here we will tell you how to do it in a simple way and without
- Wool needle
- Measuring tape
With these elements you can start in the world of crochet in a super simple way.
In fact, Maria Julia Mackeprang , teacher of the crochet techniques course ,
mentions the following:
"Crochet is a versatile and generous technique, which has managed to reinvent
itself throughout history, but which has always stood out for one great virtue: it
only exists if it is knitted by hand. "She builds all her pieces in alliance with a
single needle, laying out turns upon turns in a language of dots and spaces that
gives life to a variety of weaves, designs and patterns."
Types of needle or crochet
When crocheting for beginners, you can use needles made of different materials:
metal, plastic, wood, and ergonomic ones. In fact, ergonomic ones are the most
recommended, as they make knitting easier. These are soft, easy to hold and a
good option to start crocheting.
1. Wind the yarn (the ball part) around the index finger of your non-
dominant hand . The thread should form a kind of circle or ring.
2. Now, take the thread (the long part) and make it pass through the circle .
That's it, this is how you make the slip knot.
And why is it called that? Because it slides easily over the needle and adapts to
any size needle.
First crochet stitch ✅ Shall we continue?
1. Hook the thread over the needle. Remember that the needle should be facing
your face.
2. Next, drag the yarn to the hook head.
3. Pass the hook head through the slip knot (the one you made earlier).
4. This is the correct way to start your chain. What comes next? Repeat step 1,
2 and 3.
Single crochet, single crochet or half stitch
This is another of the most used stitches in crochet. It is done like this:
1. Insert the needle into the last chain stitch we made previously . Make sure
not to tighten the thread too much.
2. Insert the hook into the second stitch of your chain . Check that there are
two threads on the needle.
3. Hook the yarn over the needle and through the hook head. Check that there
are two threads on the needle.
4. Re-hook the thread in front of the needle and pass through the head of the
needle through both strands.
5. Then, repeat steps 1, 2 and 3 with the next stitch in the chain .
High point or double crochet
To learn how to knit with this crochet stitch, you will need to have a base chain.
Acrylic yarn can be used in crocheted garments for both summer and winter
depending on the thickness of the yarn chosen.
Acrylic yarn for crocheting can also be found in three different forms:
Sedified threads. They are threads that have gone through a process in
which the wool has been softened.
Nuanced. Different colors of threads that intertwine with each other.
Opaque acrylic . This yarn is usually the easiest to find and is often
used a lot when crocheting clothes due to its variety of color palette.
Cotton thread
This is a type of natural thread of plant origin. It is ideal for making crochet
clothes that you can wear in summer and spring, because it offers a very varied
color palette and they are usually opaque threads. This type of crochet thread for
beginners is also quite common to use and looks great in crochet fabrics.
Cotton threads can be found in fine thickness and also in intermediate thickness.
The thin thickness is generally composed of 3 strands. In those of intermediate
thickness, on the other hand, each strand of thread is made up of 8 strands twisted
together.
wool yarn
Wool yarn is perfect for crocheting winter clothes, as it regulates body
temperature. In this case, the quality of the thread varies depending on the animal
from which the wool is extracted and also influences what part of the body it was
extracted from. Keep this in mind when making crochet scarves, blouses or wool
hats.
We can also find wool in different thicknesses, and these can range from size 0 to
7.
This information and more crocheting techniques for beginners can be found in
Maria Julia Mackeprang's crocheting course . Dare to take it to go from
beginner to expert and crochet fabric for garments of each season.

Crochet , crochet ( Gallicism of crochet ) or hook knitting, is a technique for knitting work with
thread or wool that uses a short and specific needle , " crochet needle " or "crochet needle"
made of metal, plastic or wood.
This work, similar to knitting , consists of passing one ring of thread over another, although
unlike this, you only work with one of the rings at a time.
Crochet is also called " woven " pieces or pieces made using this technique, such as: quilts,
lace, centerpieces, clothing, etc.
Etymology
The word crochet comes from the Old French crochet , a diminutive of croche , which in turn
comes from the German croc , meaning "hook." 1 This word was used in the 17th century in
French lace manufacturing, crochetage was the word used to designate a point where
separate pieces of lace are joined, later the word crochet was used to designate a specific type
of fabric and the hook needle used to produce it. In the present, techniques derived from those
used in ancient France are used, although they are not exactly the same, the term crochet or
crochet is used to designate them. 2 The name "Crochet" varies depending on where you live.
For example, it is known as haken in the Netherlands, haekling in Denmark, hekling in Norway,
virkning in Sweden and uncinetto in Italy.
Origins [ edit ]
It is speculated that crochet evolved from traditional Arab , South American or Chinese
practices, but there is no consistent evidence of this work until it became popular in Europe
during the 16th century. 3 The first written references date back to the work shepherds'sknitting
in the book TheMemoirsof a Highland Lady by Elizabeth Grant in 1812. The first published
patterns appeared in the German magazine Pénelopé in 1824. Another piece of evidence that
crochet was a new technique during the 19th century is the publication of A Winter's Gift in
1847, with detailed instructions for making the stitches, although it is assumed that readers
understood the basic steps of other crochet projects. needle. Early references to this work in
Godey's Lady's Book (1846-47) allude to Crotchet before its spelling was standardized in 1848.
4
Some writers speculate that this technique was in fact used by ancient cultures; but to knit,
instead of the typical crochet hook, they used the flexed index finger, which is why there were
no objects left to confirm this practice. However, they argue the simplicity of the technique to
claim that it "must" have existed in ancient periods.
Other writers point out that fabrics, knitted and knotted warps survive from very early ages,
however there is no evidence of samples of fabrics made with crochet hooks in any
ethnological collection or archaeological provenance prior to 1800. These writers point to the
embroidery needles used in frame embroidery in France in the 18th century to assert that the
technique of making loops on a fine frame with a frame evolved into that of hoopless crochet.
History
Throughout the world crochet became a thriving cottage industry, especially in Ireland and
northern France, supporting communities whose traditional way of life had been damaged by
wars, fluctuations in agriculture and the use of land and poor harvests. Women, and
sometimes even children, stayed at home and wove clothes, blankets, etc. to get money. The
items were purchased primarily by the emerging middle class.
The introduction of crochet as an imitation of a symbol of prestige, rather than a unique craft in
itself, had stigmatized the common practice. Those who could afford lace made by more
expensive and older methods disdained crochet as a cheap copy. This imprint was partly
mitigated by Queen Victoria , who openly purchased artisanal crochet lace from Ireland and
even taught herself to knit. The inventor of Irish crochet is considered to be Mademoiselle
Riego de la Branchardière around 1842 5 who published patterns and instructions for
reproducing bobbin lace and filtiré with this technique, along with many publications for making
clothes crocheted in wool. The patterns available as early as the 1840s were varied and
complex.
Tools
Crochet hooks are sold in different sizes and materials. The most used are steel ones,
especially for work with fine cotton and pearl thread. The aluminum ones are suitable for
thicker threads and the plastic ones for medium thickness wool threads.
There are also handmade crochet hooks, most of them carved in wood and some decorated
with semi-precious stones or beads.
Process
A piece begins by holding the thread with one hand while the one holding the crochet hook
makes a loop by passing the thread through a first slip knot. This is repeated until a chain of
the desired length is formed. This simple process serves as the basis for various types, such
as chain stitch, single crochet, false stitch, half stitch, double crochet, in a circle. 6 A new
material that has been incorporated into crochet is t-shirt.
Other techniques
Amigurumi (編み包み lit. knitted stuffed animal ) is a technique of Japanese origin that consists
?
of knitting small dolls using crochet. 7 Amigurumis mainly take the form of animals such as
bears, rabbits, cats or dogs, but other dolls with anthropomorphic shapes and even
accessories such as bags or purses are also often created. 8
