DAY 1 – CREATE YOUR ACCOUNT
First, let's create your Instagram account. Today, we're just going to
knock out 3 simple steps – but they're powerful ones! So get excited...
1. Choose an available username that matches the name of your
business or what you're hoping to create.
2. Try adding periods or underscores before numbers to make your
account easier to find.
3. Make sure your password is strong to avoid getting hacked.
Helpful Hint:
Choose a username that aligns with your business or brand...
[Your Name] + [Niche/Industry]
[Niche/Industry] + [Your Name]
[Your Name] + [Your Passion]
[Your Name] + [Your Hobby]
[Your Name] + [Your Location]
[Your Name] + [Your Profession]
DAY 2 – UPDATE YOUR INFO
Next, let's make sure your account info is up-to-date so it's easier for
your dream clients + followers to find you...
1. Click "Edit profile" on your account
2. Add a clear profile image either of you or your business logo
3. Update your name to the name of your business or your name
4. This is also a great place to include targeted keywords to help
Instagram users find you in their search results
5. For example, if you were a photographer, your name might be “First
Name Last Name | Chicago Photographer”
6. If the account is for you, rather than a business, add your pronouns
DAY 3 – SET YOUR ACCOUNT
Now, we'll make sure you have the right kind of account. This is
important so you can make the most of Instagram's built-in features...
1. Under Settings, go to "Account" and scroll down to “Switch account
type”
2. You can choose to be a personal account or a professional account
3. If you are using your Instagram account for a personal brand or your
company, we recommend switching to a professional account
4. Professional accounts will give you access to:
a. Audience insights
b. The ability to boost your posts and run advertisements
c. Contact buttons
d. Quick reply
e. Scheduling tools
f. Instagram Shopping
g. Paid Partnership Tool to collaborate with brands
5. Then choose whether you are a creator account or business account
a. Creator accounts are best for influencers and content creators
looking to work with brands and those with personal brands
b. Business accounts are best for accounts selling their own
products or services, but business accounts are limited in what
sounds they are able to use from the audio library for legal
purposes
Helpful Hint:
Your account type is important – but you can always change
it. Don't let analysis paralysis stop you from moving forward at
this stage...you don't have to have it all figured out already.
DAY 4 – WRITE YOUR BIO
You have 150 characters to write about yourself or your business in your
bio, and since it is at the top of your account, it is the perfect place to
write about who you are and what you do.
1. Make sure you keep it short and informative
2. Include a sentence or two that capture what your brand is about
3. Then, add a call to action to click the link in your bio, use your
hashtag, or use your contact buttons
4. You can also include any related accounts or hashtags
DAY 5 – OPTIMIZE YOUR BIO
Under "Edit Profile," you can add both a link and your contact information.
Instagram allows you to include a link in your bio + we strongly
recommend you do. This can be your website, newsletter opt-in page, a
link to one of your offers, your latest blog post, your podcast, or any link
that you are currently sending traffic to from your account.
You can also add contact information, including your email address,
business phone number, business address, and more. Make sure you only
add contact information that you want associated with your business.
DAY 6 – DO YOUR RESEARCH
Before you start posting, do some research to find out what kind of
content is performing well on Instagram and in your specific niche.
Use your research to start brainstorming the kind of content you want to
share on your page.
This is also a great time to either start or revamp your personal brand.
You want people to recognize your brand in your content just from
looking at it.
Helpful Hint:
Check out what other similar brands are doing on
Instagram and which posts their audience is engaging
with.
Read blogs about social media best practices, like Later,
Hootsuite, or Sprout Social.
Subscribe to newsletters that share social media updates.
Aside from the bossbabe edit, we also love Later and
Social Files.
DAY 7 – CREATE A STATIC POST
Your first post is a great opportunity
to introduce yourself and your
account. Choose either a clear image
of yourself or create a graphic –
Canva makes it easy...even if you're
not a graphic designer.
Use an image that will stop people
from scrolling past your post. If
you’re creating a graphic, you can
include information about your
business.
DAY 8 – WRITE YOUR CAPTION
Now that you have your post ready, you need to write a caption. Your
caption is a great place to hook in your audience, include more
information, and include a call to action.
Your caption is also a great place to include keywords to help people
find your posts in search. Currently, Instagram recommends adding your
keywords to your caption instead of using hashtags.
For example, if you are promoting your photography business in
Chicago, you should include the words “Chicago photographer,”
“photographer in Chicago,” or “engagement shoot in Chicago,” in your
caption.
For your CTA, you can ask your audience to click the link in your bio,
comment below, tag a friend, or any other action you’d like them to take.
Helpful Hint:
Here’s the caption formula we use!
Hook + More Details + CTA
Your hook could be something like “Raise your hand if…”
or “Affirm:”
Then, go into more detail about the post or the offer
you’re promoting
End with a CTA: click the link in our bio, check out our
stories on XYZ, comment YES if you agree, tag a friend
below, etc.
DAY 9 – POST YOUR 1ST POST
You have your image and your caption, so now it’s time to post! Here are
step-by-step instructions to follow...
When you open the Instagram app, click the "+" button in the middle
of the menu at the bottom. Scroll to the left to “Post” and then add
your image from your photo library.
Once the photo you want to use is in the space under “New Post,”
click "Next" in the top right corner.
Add your caption where it says “Write a caption…”
If you click on “Tag people,” you can tag people in your photo. For
example, if you are posting a photo of you on your business page,
you can tag yourself.
Here, you can also add a location. For our Chicago photographer
example, tagging Chicago or the location of the photo will help
people find you through location searches.
Once your post is ready, click “Share.”
DAY 10 – FOLLOW ACCOUNTS
Following accounts in your niche will help connect you with other brands
and their followers, as well as helping inspire your content.
If you already know brands in your niche, make sure to follow them. If
you don’t, you can use keywords and locations to search for them. (Hint:
That’s how people will find you in the future, so make sure to use the
right search words in your posts.)
DAY 11 – NOTIFY CLIENTS
If you have a presence on another social media platform or an email list,
now is a great time to share with your existing audience that you’re now
on Instagram! You can link to your first post or your account and share it
with them.
DAY 12 – ENGAGE FOLLOWERS
Once you have some followers, it’s time to engage with them! If they are
commenting on your posts, respond to them.
If they are DMing you, message them back. You can also message
people who share your content on their stories or tag you in their posts.
Engaging with your audience will help you create a community and grow
your audience quicker.
DAY 13 – CREATE YOUR 1ST REEL

DAY 14 – SET UP IG SHOPPING
If you don’t have physical products, use today to batch more content! If
you do, it’s time to set up your shop!
Instagram Shopping allows Instagram users to buy your products directly
from your account on the app.
The first step is to check your eligibility based on these requirements:
Your business is located in an eligible country
Your account is connected to your website domain that you sell
from directly
Your business has an eligible product
Your business complies with Instagram’s merchant and
commerce policies
Then connect your Instagram to your Facebook page
Click on “Edit Profile,” then select “Page” under “Public business
information” and select your business Facebook page
If you don’t have one set up for your business, select “Create a
New Facebook Page”
Now you can upload your product catalog including a list of your
products, descriptions, and inventory
You can use the catalogue manager in Facebook Business
Manager or an e-commerce platform partner
Next, you’ll submit your account for review!
Under “Settings,” click “Sign Up for Shopping”
This could take a few days to be reviewed
Once your account is approved, you can turn on your shopping
under “Settings,” then “Business,” then “Shopping” and choose the
product catalog you want to use
Your shop will now be available on your profile
From now on, you can tag products on your posts!
DAY 15 – POST AN IG STORY
Aside from in feed posts, Instagram Stories are a great way to connect
with your audience. Instagram Stories last 24 hours and are not a part of
the grid on your page.
You can be really creative with your Instagram Stories including photos,
videos, graphics, and all of Instagram’s engagement tools.
Today, let’s post a casual video of you talking to your audience. (Yes, you
on camera! We’re jumping right in!) Think about what you want to say to
introduce yourself and your business.
Once you’re ready, hit the "+" button at the bottom and scroll to “Story.”
Then turn the camera towards you and start recording! (It’s okay to
delete your first take!)
Helpful Hint:
After you’re done recording,
click the smiley face in the top
menu to add Instagram tools.
For talking stories and reels, we
recommend adding captions
with Instagram’s Captions tool
to make your content
accessible.
Some other tools you can use:
Question Feature - use this
to ask your audience their
opinions, for a Q&A, or any
other short form response
Polls - you can use this tool
to poll your audience (with
up to 4 options)
Quiz - this feature is similar
to the polls tool, but you can
select a correct answer.
Make sure the correct
answer is highlighted green.
DAY 16 – LEARN ANALYTICS
One of the best parts of having a professional account is access to
analytics. Now that you’ve created a few posts, it’s time to look at your
analytics.
On each post, you can click “View Insights” to see your post reach (how
many people saw your content), post engagement (how many people
engaged with your content, broken into likes, comments, shares, and
saves), and profile activity (how many people visited your page, followed
you, and used your contact buttons).
You can also find more information if you go to the three bars at the top
right corner of your profile, and click on “Insights.”
There is a TON of information available in Instagram’s Insights section.
At the top, you can set your date range.
Under "Overview," you can see your Accounts Reached, Accounts
Engaged, and Total Followers. You can also see the content you’ve
shared this week.
Under "Accounts Reached," they break down your audience by city,
country, age, and gender. Below that, your content reach is broken
down by followers and non-followers for the different types of
content. You can also find your total impressions and top posts
based on reach under each content category. At the very bottom,
you can also find a breakdown of the profile activity across all of your
posts.
Under "Accounts Engaged," there is an engaged audience
breakdown that mirrors the reached audience breakdown. Content
interactions by followers and non-followers, and interactions (likes,
comments, shares, and saves for posts and Reels and replies and
shares for Stories) broken down by each post category. You can also
see the top posts for each category.
Under Total Followers, you can find your follower growth, and more
specific information on their locations, ages, and genders.
DAY 16 – LEARN ANALYTICS CONT.
You can also click on a content category (posts, stories, or reels) to filter
them based on performance in different areas (for example, website
taps, reach, impressions, post interactions, and so much more).
We recommend tracking your analytics somewhere, since Instagram
doesn’t keep all of this information over time. There are some metrics,
like highest reach that you can see 2 years of data and others that you
can only see for the day, like your total followers that day.
DAY 17 – SET UP QUICK REPLIES
Next, let's set up Quick Replies so you can easily respond to FAQs in
your DMs
Here’s how to set them up:
Under "Settings," select "Business," and then "Saved replies"
Then click the "+" button to add a new quick reply
Add your shortcut and the message you want to send and save the
reply. You can use these to share business hours, your return policy,
your response to new customers, and anything else you find yourself
typing over and over
DAY 18 – SET UP HIGHLIGHTS
Even though your Instagram Stories are only live for 24 hours, you can
create highlights on your account to keep important stories on your
feed. After a story is posted, you can select the heart at the bottom of
the screen that says “Highlight” and add it to a highlight of your choice.
We recommend including multiple different categories as highlights and
saving related stories to them. For example, a Chicago photographer
could include highlights of their pricing and services and either locations
they shoot at often or types of shoots they do.
You can create easy highlight covers in Canva, either with a solid brand
color, a little icon, or a related photo.
DAY 19 – POST A CAROUSEL
For your third post, you’re going to post a carousel. Carousels are similar
to static posts, but they include multiple slides of content.
Carousel posts are great for photo dumps, infographics or roundups of
related content.
Step-By-Step Carousel Directions...
Once you have your carousel post and caption ready, click the
"+" sign at the bottom of the app and swipe over to “Post.”
In the middle of the screen, there will be an icon of stacked
squares on the right side. Once you click it, it will turn blue and
label an image at the bottom as 1.
Click the images in the order you want them to appear in the
carousel. If you click the wrong image or video, double click the
image to remove. You may also hold down an image to
rearrange the order they appear.
From there, the process is the same as a static post.
DAY 20 – BATCH CONTENT
Now that you’ve created all kinds of content, it’s time to batch content for a
week! Instagram recommends posting in feed and in your stories daily, so
try to plan a variety of posts and stories to go up every day on your account.
Set aside some time to film Reels, create graphics, and write captions so
you can check this off your list for the week! We love to block one day out
of our week to create content and get it scheduled so we don’t have to
worry about it throughout the day every day.
