1. What is a geode?
Answer -We often compare the Earth to the shape of an orange or a pea because
the Earth is slightly depressed at the top and bottom and bulging in the middle. But
although the shape of the earth is somewhat similar to them, the shape of the real
earth is the same as the earth, which is called a geode in English.
2. Why is the Earth's gravity greater at the poles than at the equator?
Answer -Because the equatorial region is slightly inflated compared to the polar
regions, the Earth's gravitational pull is less at the equator and more at the poles.
3. Whose first idea is the round earth?
Answer [1] Around 500 BC, the Greek scholar Pythagoras proposed the spherical
shape of the Earth. [2] Around 200 BC, the Greek scholar Eratosthenes first correctly
stated that the Earth is round. [3] In 1519, the Portuguese navigator Magellan
proposed the spherical shape of the Earth. [4] The Greek philosopher Aristotle
proposed the idea of a spherical Earth by observing the spherical shadow of the
Earth on the Moon during a lunar eclipse. [5] The Indian scientist Aryabhata was also
a believer in the idea of a spherical Earth.
4. How did Magillan prove that the earth is round?
Answer -In 1519, the Portuguese navigator Magellan proceeded westwards with five
ships. Thus proceeding in the same direction, he once again returned to the same
port from which he started his journey. This proves that the earth is round.
5. Where is Earth's gravity greatest and least?
Answer - Earth's gravity is greatest at the poles and least at the equator. Therefore,
an object weighs more at the poles than at the equator.
6. Why don't we fall from the spherical earth surface?
Answer -The Earth is spherical in shape and rotates at high speed. So apparently it
seems natural that we should fall. But the Earth's gravity pulls every object, including
humans, towards its center, and as a result, everything revolves around the Earth.
That's why we don't fall down.
7. How is it proved that the earth is round?
Answer -a) Looking ahead from an open field or empty space, we see a place where
the sky and the field seem to meet, which we call the horizon line. If the earth was
not round, such a horizon line would not have been formed.
b) The spherical shadow of the earth on the moon during a lunar eclipse also proves
that the earth is round. Because as the shape of the object, so is its shadow.
c) Sunlight does not fall on all parts of the earth at the same time, which proves that
the earth is round. Because if the earth was flat, the sun would shine everywhere at
the same time.
D) Again, the shape of the earth is easily proved through the pictures taken from
modern satellites.
8. Is there any change in the shape of the earth for the high places on the earth ie
mountains, plateaus, valleys, gorges etc.?
Answer - There is no change in the shape of the earth for the high and low places on
the earth ie mountains, plateaus, valleys, gorges etc. The shape of the Earth's
surface does not change much for the vast surface of the Earth with a radius of
about 6371 km, high mountain ranges, plateaus, canyons, undersea canyons etc.
From space or the upper layer of the atmosphere, it looks almost smooth. But the
earth is called geoid shape because the earth is not completely round
9. The weight of an object at the center of the earth, i.e. at the equator, is greater at
both ends than at the poles. Think about why this happens? Does it have anything to
do with the shape of the earth?
Answer -An object's weight is less at the equator and more at either end or near the
poles. This is mainly due to the difference in gravity in different parts of the world. It
has a direct relationship with the shape of the earth. Because the Earth's polar
regions are slightly depressed, the gravitational force is greater here and the weight
is also greater. On the other hand, because the equatorial region is slightly inflated,
there is less gravitational force, so less weight.
10. How is it proved that the earth is round?
