1.

0 PURPOSE

To define the procedures for handling hazardous chemicals spillage and evacuating
building.

2.0 SCOPE

3.0 RESPONSIBILITIES
The manager or supervisor must ensure through delegation, that the requirements of
this Policy document are within the site’s health and safety management system. In
turns, departmental heads will ensure full implementation within their respective
departments.

4.0 DEFINITION
4.1 HCl – Hydrochloric acid. Hydrochloric acid is a highly corrosive, strong
inorganic/mineral acid. If not stored and handled properly, this can pose a
serious threat to the health and safety of laboratory personnel, emergency
responders and chemical waste handlers.
4.2 Corrosive – Causes severe eye and skin burns
4.3 Irritant – Causes slight inflammation towards eye, skin, respiratory tract,
digestive tract

5.0 PROCEDURE
5.1 On hearing evacuation siren all employees must calmly walk to the nearest
exit door and proceed to the assembly point.
5.2 On hearing the evacuation siren and where is safe to do so, staff should
ensure the equipment on which they have been working is left in a safe
condition and then leave the building by the nearest safe route.
It is safe to do so, staff working on the dipping lines should:

 Pull the emergency stop line on the dipping plant they are assigned to;
or
 If it unsafe to carry out the above, or if no-one present in the dipping
area at the time of the alarm, the line must be stopped by operation of
the Emergency stop button situated on the center panel.
5.3 On evacuation, all staff will assemble at their designated assembly point and
await arrival of their Evacuation Marshall. The Evacuation Marshall will then
check that all personnel are clear of the building by conducting a roll-call
using the attendance card and checklists and inform of any missing/surplus
person to the Fire Marshall.
5.4 Any member of the staff must inform the Fire Marshall if they are aware of
any of the following information:

 That someone is still in the building and their last known whereabouts
if known;
 Where is the leakage or spillage?
5.5 All staff is to remain at their assembly point until the official all clear to re-
enter the building is given by the Fire Marshall or the Senior Member of the
staff.
5.6 If skin is exposed to hydrochloric acid, remove contaminated clothing and
shoes, rinse for 15 minutes in the safety shower. Send someone to call 911
as soon as possible.
5.7 If eye is exposed to hydrochloric acid, call 911 as soon as possible and flush
eyes for 15 minutes in the eye wash, continue rinsing eyes during transport to
hospital.
5.8 If it is safe to clean up the spill, wear PPE listed above. Dilute spill with water
and use sodium carbonate to neutralize the spill. Clean up neutralized spill
with sponges, spill pads or paper towels. Double bag and securely fasten spill
materials. Label as hazardous waste. Do not absorb the spill without
neutralizing first.

6.0 REQUIRED EQUIPMENT


Spill kit (Gloves, safety shoes, respirator, etc.)
