1.1 Location Selection:

Firstly, we must select the location which near to the MCR/Control Room or any ICR. Take a
sufficient distance away from solar panel to avoid the shadow. Also take care of that, there
is no shadow will coming on weather monitoring station so that choose the location which is
away from any building and tree.

Fig 1(a). Location selection

1.2 Civil work:

Does 5 holes, 3 for tripod foundation and remaining 2 for tripod and data logger earthing.
The depth of holes should be at least of 0.75 meter (Varies with site conditions) for
structure strength and proper grounding. The foundation holes are taken equal side at the
angle of 120-degree Tripod foundation should be up to the ground level, and the foundation
bolt arrangement are like as half dip and half free for further adjustment. Installation will
always start next day to the day of civil work for foundation strengthening.

1.3 Tripod Installation:

Loosen all the nut with help of spanner, stretch all the three legs with equally distance from
each other at the angle of 120 degree each. Set the tripod stand in foundation bolt and
make sure that all the three side are set at zero level with the help of split leveller. Tighten
all the bolts of stand and foundation bolts as well. Now we have three poles, two poles are
the length of approx. 1.25 metres each and remaining one is boom pipe. Take 1.25 metre

irradiance) and POA (plane of array).
2.3.3 Levelling: For GHI (Global Horizontal Irradiance)

Accurate measurement of the global radiation requires proper levelling of the

detector surface. Level the instrument by turning the two adjustable feet to bring
the bubble of the spirit level centrally within the marked ring. For easy levelling, first
use the screw nearest to the spirit level.

Note It is ideal that the bubble should be completely within the marked ring. However, in fact, the
pyranometer is level within the specified accuracy when the bubble is at least half within the ring.

Fig 2(e): Levelling of Pyranometer

2.3.4 Fitting the connector and cable

Locate the plug correctly in the pyranometer socket, it only fits one way, and push it in.
Screw the plug locking ring hand tight. Over-tightening may damage the waterproof seal.
Secure the cable so that it cannot blow in the wind or cause a shadow on the instrument.
- The connector of the pyranometer should be in north direction.

Note The cable should be arranged with a curve below the instrument so that water drips o rather than
running along the cable up to the connector.

2.4 Module Surface Temperature Sensor: -

2.4.1 CS240 Module Temperature Sensor: -

The CS240 temperature sensors use a precision 1000-ohm

class A platinum resistance temperature detector to
measure temperature from –40 to 105 °C. They are
designed for measuring the back-of-photovoltaic (PV)
module temperature but also can be used to measure the
surface temperature of other devices. The CS240 can be
measured with a 2-wire or 4-wire configuration and is compatible with most Campbell
Scientific data loggers.

2.4.2 Tools required

- Kapton tape.

Fig 2(j): Kapton Tape

2.4.3. Installation:

- Placement on a Photovoltaic (PV) Module

The PV module may or may not have distinctive photocells. If the PV module does not have
distinctive photocells, center the sensor on the back of the PV module. If the module has
several distinctive photocells, center the sensor on the back of the photocell that is the
middle of the PV module.

- Mounting/Cable Strain Relief

Before mounting, the installers need to wash their hands and then clean the back of the PV
module or other device with ethyl alcohol.

Adhesive Mounting Strip

The CS240 include an adhesive mounting strip adhered to the flat surface of the aluminium
disk. To mount the sensor, remove the paper from the mounting strip and adhere it to the
back of the PV module or other device. The mounting strip must be adhered to a clean
surface for its adhesive to function properly.

Kapton Tape

Use Kapton tape for cable strain relief a yellow label on the cable indicates where the cable
must be secured, If the temperature might exceed 70 °C, Kapton tape is also required to
better secure the sensor to the measurement surface.

To ensure that the sensor disk and cable are adequately fastened to the measurement
surface, use three strips of Kapton tape in two places each:

1. For strain relief, place the first strip of tape across the cable just below the yellow
heat shrink, and rub the tape surface to remove bubble.

2. Place the other strips of tape on the first strip of tape and rub the tape surface to
remove bubbles. These strips of tape should be perpendicular to the first strip of
tape—forming an “H”.

3. To secure the sensor to the module surface, remove the paper from the bottom of
the disk and adhere the disk to the PV module Placement on a Photovoltaic (PV).

Fig 2(k): Installation of CS240 using Kapton Tape

4. Place a strip of tape across the sensor head, perpendicular to the cable and rub the
tape surface to remove bubbles. Rub as close as possible to the sensor disk. Do not
go over the sensor moulding with the tape; only put tape over the metal disk portion
of the sensor.
5. Place the two other strips of tape on the ends of the sensor disk, perpendicular to
the first piece of tape and parallel to the cable then rub the tape surface into the
module surface. Shown in figure.

2.10 Electrostatic Discharge and Lightning Protection

Warning: Lightning strikes may damage or destroy the datalogger and associated sensors and power supplies.

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can originate from several sources, the most common and
destructive being primary and secondary lightning strikes. Primary lightning strikes hit
instrumentation directly. Secondary strikes induce voltage in power lines or wires connected
to instrumentation. While elaborate, expensive, and nearly infallible lightning protection
systems are on the market, Campbell Scientific, for many years, has employed a simple and
inexpensive design that protects most systems in most circumstances. The system employs
a lightning rod, metal mast, heavy-gauge ground wire, and ground rod to direct damaging
current away from the datalogger. This system, however, is not infallible. The following
image displays a typical application of the system:
