General English Rule 11 :Pair words

Syllabus and books 1. Pair Words like : Bread and butter, rice and curry, hammer and sickle, slow
and steady, truth and honesty, horse and carriage, crown and glory, rise and
fall, eggs and bacon, coming and going, bag and baggage etc. always follow
Singular Verb.

Rule 12 : Use of “The number of” , “A number of”
1. With “The Number of ” – Singular verb With “The Percentage of” – Singular verb is used.
2. With “ A Number of” – Plural verb

Rule 14 : Rule 15 : With collective nouns like – a bunch of, a flock of, a herd
With “Certain amount, weight, certain period , certain of, a set of, a crowd of….etc.- Singular Verb is used.
distance, certain height” – Singular verb is used.

❑ Five rupees is very small amount.
❑ A bunch of grapes is kept on the table.
❑ Two tons of coal is not enough for him.
❑ A team of players has come late.
❑Six years is a long period.
