I. Context and Rationale

This study was conceived primarily to know the impact or effect of Math Board

Game to minimize if not totally solve the non-numerates problem in the workplace of the

researchers, Lamao Elementary School.

Based on the school report on the number of non-numerates of Grade II conducted

using DUNT (Division Unified Numeracy Test) last September 2022, there were 81.82%

in addition and 100% in subtraction. This means we need to enhance their numeracy

skills specifically in adding and subtracting numbers. This technique will develop critical

thinking, memorization, love of numbers, alertness, accuracy and speed, and number

recognition.

As noted by Vice President and Secretary of Education Sara Z. Duterte, the

Department will revitalize its Reading, Science and Technology, and Math programs as

part of the MATATAG: Bansang Makabata, Batang Makabansa agenda on February 2,

2023. The improvement of literacy and numeracy programs and the integration of ‘peace

competencies’ will be some of the priorities of the Department of Education (DepEd) in

making the K to 12 curriculums relevant to produce job-ready, active, and responsible

citizens. DepEd’s numeracy program as stated in ELLN (Early Language Literacy and

Numeracy Program: Professional Development Component) aims to develop Filipino

children's literacy and numeracy skills and attitudes which will contribute to lifelong

learning. More specifically, it aims to improve the reading and numeracy skills of Kinder

to Grade 3 pupils, following K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum, and to establish a

sustainable and cost-effective professional development system for teachers as stated in

DepEd Order No. 12, Series 2015.

While addition and subtraction are keys to mathematical skills for young children, a typical

activity for them in classrooms involves doing repetitive arithmetic calculation exercises.

There is a growing awareness that many children are not developing fast and accurate

retrieval-based strategies for solving single-digit addition problems. Pupils have

difficulties in understanding addition and subtraction of numbers. These difficulties need

to be anticipated to find ways to reduce them.

. According to the study of Liu et al. (2017), Chinese school systems predominantly

emphasize rote memorization of single-digit and two-digit arithmetic facts. Because of

repeated practice, many Chinese elementary students eventually reach the level of

mastery of direct retrieval of basic arithmetic facts. Many Chinese elementary students

not only retrieve basic arithmetic facts but also rote memorize many schemas such as 25

× 4 and 17 + 13. In single-step mental addition, Chinese elementary students utilize direct

retrieval and schemas that become automatic. Thus, direct retrieval and schema

automaticity in single-step mental addition might have an impact on the response time

and accuracy rate of multi-step mental addition.

Understanding the concept of adding and subtracting numbers is very important for

learners because it is the basis for understanding other material, one of which can be

done by using various approaches. While many adults may think that the math students

learn in the earliest grades is simple, that could not be further from the truth. Without a

strong core understanding of these mathematical ideas about numbers, addition, and

subtraction, students may struggle to make sense of math for years to come. In fact, early

competence with numbers has proven to be a predictor of future success in mathematics

and of schooling in general into the high school years (Denton & West, 2002; Duncan et

al., 2007; National Mathematics Advisory Panel,2008.

Mental computation refers to the process of working on a problem in one’s head and

obtaining the exact or approximate answers mentally, without the use of paper, a

calculator, or other means (Jordan, Glutting, & Ramineni 2010; Heirdsfield, 2011). Mental

computation is important for children to learn, but the focus should not be limited to

helping children develop mental computation strategies, but also to develop higher order

thinking, reasoning, and critiquing, along with the ability to make sense of numbers and

number operations (Carvalho & da Ponte 2013; Erdem & Gurbuz, 2015; Erdem, Gurbuz,

& Duran, 2011). It is an important thinking process because it enables children to: learn

more in depth about how numbers relate to each other, make decisions about procedures,

and create strategies for calculating (Tsao, 2011; Everett, Harsy, Hupp, & Jewell, 2014).

Mental computation is the most common form of computation used in everyday life. It is

used for quick calculations and estimations but is more than mental arithmetic. These

thinking processes provide learners with opportunities to construct relational

understanding and algebraic thinking (O’Nan, 2003; Parrish, 2010, 2011; Obersteiner,

Reiss, & Ufer, 2013; Morin, 2017). Teachers become more aware of their instructional

limitations and are more willing to re-examine their methods and strategies through

reflections on their teaching and their student’s learning.

Parents and guardians are valuable partners in reinforcing the strategies you are

developing in school. You should help parents understand the importance of these

strategies in the overall development of their children’s mathematical thinking, and

encourage them to have their children do mental computation in natural situations at

home and out in the community. You should also help parents understand that the

methods and techniques that helped them learn basic facts as students may also work

for their children and are still valuable strategies to introduce. We can never be sure which

ideas will make the most sense to children, but we can always be certain that they will

adopt the strategies that work best for them. A strong relationship between home

background variables and student performance is well documented (Robitaille & Garden,

1989; Wang, Haertel, & Walberg, 1993).

A. Research Paradigm

This study was conceptualized to determine the effect of Math Board Game to

the level of pupils’ numeracy skills in Mathematics Grade II through the mean and MPS

(mean percentage score) of pretest and post-test results.

Math Board Game served as independent variable and pupil’s numeracy skills in
Grade II as dependent variable.

Pupil’s Numeracy Skill in

Math Board Game Mathematics in Grades II

I. Action Research Questions

This action research sought answers to the following questions.

1. What is the pretest result of Grade II pupils in addition and subtraction?

2. What is the post-test result of Grade II pupils in addition and subtraction?

3. Will there be significant difference between the pretest and post-test of Grade II pupils

in addition and subtraction?

III. Proposed Innovation, Intervention, and Strategy

This action research targeted to utilize the effect of Math Board Game in

developing pupils’ numeracy skills specifically in addition and subtraction without

regrouping in first to second quarter and with regrouping on third to fourth quarter. The

proposed technique conceived this action research proposal in the utilization of Math

Board Game. The authors of this intervention believed that implementing it is a solution

to enhance the performance of Grade 2 of Lamao Elementary School on basic addition

and subtraction. The basic operations in numeracy are important materials to be taught

so that students understand other numbers of materials. This technique developed

critical thinking, memorization, love of numbers, alertness, accuracy and speed, and

number recognition.

The researchers provided a so-called Math Board Game with sets of numbers up

to 50 for Grade II on cardboard paper. Chips with numbers will also be provided. The

teacher flashed numbers to be solved mentally. The respondents utilized the Math Board

Game. It can be done individually, by pair, and by group or team. Whoever answered

quickly got the point. Every day, the teacher flashed at least 10 items. The learner who

got the highest score for the day was given a badge. It was conducted from 1:00 to 1:30

in the afternoon.

Rewards every weekend were given to those who earned the most numbered

badges. Basic operations in Mathematics like addition and subtraction were enhanced by

this intervention.

Involving parents in their child’s development of numeracy skills certainly brought

positive outcomes for children. Parents may need support on how best to support their

child with numbers. To fully engage the parents in this intervention, researchers

conducted demonstrations on how to perform this intervention at home as a follow-up to

gain mastery. This activity also developed strong family bonds among parents and

children. In this modern age, some families neglect to spend time with their children.

IV. Action Research Methods

a. Participants and/ or Sources of Data and Information

The target participants of this research work were Grade 2 pupils, completely

enumerated in Lamao Elementary School. Meanwhile, relevant data came from the

teacher handling the Grade 2 class. These include the level of pupils’ skills in numeracy-

addition and subtraction during the pre-test conducted using DUNT tool and teacher-

validated test.

b. Data Gathering Methods

DUNT (Division Unified Numeracy Test) and the teacher-validated test were used

to gather data to determine the pupils’ skills in numeracy during the first to second quarter.

It was administered among Grade 2 pupils of Lamao Elementary School by the teachers

handling them. The researchers used a pretest-posttest single-case quasi-experimental

design because only one group was used in the study.

Before the conduct of data gathering, respondents were oriented about the

purpose of the research work and its relevance to encourage their utmost participation.

Likewise, the confidentiality of their responses will be secured. They were also informed

of the principle of voluntary participation. No one was coerced into participating in this

research. Upon soliciting 100 percent of the target responses, results were tallied,

analyzed, and interpreted using the appropriate statistical tools.

c. Data Analysis Plan

The mean Percentage Score was used to know the descriptive rating of pupils.
Include the T-test of correlated samples to get the difference in the pretest and post-test.
T-test was used to determine the progress made by the learners. The results of the pretest
and posttest were computed and compared. If there was an increase, there would be
significant progress after the utilization of Math Board Game.

VIII. Findings /Conclusion/Recommendation

Findings

Mean
Operation Test Mean t-value df p-value
Difference
Pretest 4.2000
5 -15.000 9 .000
Addition Posttest 9.2000
Pretest 3.4000
5.6 -25.327 9 .000
Subtraction Posttest 9.0000

As shown in Table 1, the difference between the means of the pretest and posttest
performance in Addition to Grade 2 pupils is 5. The t-value is -15.000 with 9 degrees of
freedom and a p-value of .000. Moreover, the difference between the means of the pretest
and posttest performance of the Grade 2 pupils in Subtraction is 5.6 and the t-value is -
25.327 with 9 degrees of freedom and a p-value of .000. Since the p-values of the two
operations are less than the 5% level of significance, it means that there is significant
difference between the performance of the respondents during pre-and post-tests. It
means that the Math Board Game used by the researchers is effective and has a great
effect in improving the numeracy skills, specifically in addition and subtraction of Grade II
pupils

Conclusions

Based on the findings of the study, the following conclusions were drawn:

➢ Math Board Game enhanced the numeracy skill of Grade Two pupils at Lamao
Elementary School.
➢ The pupils improved their mental computation ability after the implementation of
the Math Board Game.
➢ Math Board Game enhanced critical thinking, memorization, love of

numbers and number recognition.

➢ It improved pupil’s alertness, accuracy and speed in answering numbers.
➢ The implementation of Math Board Game was effective.

Recommendations

Based on the conclusion of the study, the following recommendations are offered:

⮚ The primary and intermediate teachers (Grade I- Grade VI) should adopt the Math

Board Game numeracy skill intervention.

⮚ The teachers should be well-oriented about the intervention.

⮚ To develop numeracy skill, Math Board Game on Numeracy Skill of Grade II Pupils

must be fully implemented the whole year round.

⮚ Math Board Game on Numeracy Skill of Grade II Pupils be replicated in the district

of Romblon.
