Identify in the image the cranial nerves and state their function (motor, sensitive
or mixed):
1. Olfactory: sensory
2. Optic: sensory
3. Oculomotor: motor
4. Trochlear: motor
5. Trigeminal:
6. Abducens: motor
7. Facial: both
8. Vestibulocochlear: sensory
9. Glossopharyngeal: both
10. Vagus: both
11. Accesory: motor
12. Hypoglossal: motor

Identify in the image the cranial nerves and name the foramen through which they
exit the cranium:
12
Identify in the image the cranial nerves and state their apparent origin:
1. Olfactory (not in the image): olfactory cells of the nasal mucose membrane located in the roof of the nasal cavity
2. Optic: ganglionic cells of the retina
3. Oculomotor: oculomotor sulcus on the medial side of the cerebral peduncle
4. Trochlear: inferior colliculus (in the dorsal surface of the brainstem)
5. Trigeminal:
6. Abducens: lower border of the pons just above the pyramid of the medulla
7. Facial:
8. Vestibulocochlear: Vestibular
Cochlear nerve: arises in the spiral ganglion of the cochlea ( ganglion of Corti)
nerve: arises in vestibular ganglion in internal auditory meatus ( ganglion of Scarpa)
9. Glossopharyngeal: from the brainstem between olive & inferior cerebellar peduncle to exit skull via jugular foramen
10. Vagus: *
11. Accesory: **
12. Hypoglossal: from the brainstem (in the groove between the pyramid and the olive) and exits the
cranium via the hypoglossal canal in the posterior cranial fossa
* fibers of the nerve unite form a flat cord and leaves the cranium through the jugular foramen. After its exit the vagus is joined by the cranial
portion of the spinal nerve, passes vertically down the neck between the internal jugular vein and internal carotid artery to the chest and abdomen
** from the medulla, the cranial root fibers join the spinal root fibers and enter the jugular foramen. Within the foramen,
the cranial root fibers join the vagus nerve to exit the skull

Identify in the image the cranial nerves and briefly state its function/structures
which it innervates:
2. Optic:
3. Oculomotor:
