Introduction
Leadership is an ability where the person will be a power to guide,
influence, and inspires other. It’s more like having a power to
command your followers or having charisma to them. It is a skill where
the leaders can inherit. In other side, Foundational Kurt Lewin gave
his definition about the three major leadership styles: the
autocratic, democratic, and laissez-faire. Those are the three
leadership styles that he defined. And giving emphasis to our topic,
Lewin et. Al created a rough sketch of democratic leadership, the one
that can basis for other researcher like us: The basis of Democratic
Leader will be based on group decision making, active member
involvement, honest praise and criticism, and a degree of comradeship.
According to study written in the Journal of Social Psychology by Kurt
Lewin that was published way back 1939, he stated that democratic
leadership came from the concept democracy which means government by
the people, some people can fill the role of leaders and some will
fill the role of followers. As stated above, anyone who wants to be a
leader can be a leader and the position of being a leader is open for
anyone who can led his/her followers. Moreover, being leader in
democratic style can not be a power for a leader because the voice of
others will be heard and the opinion of the followers will be
respected and must be valued. Being a leader in democratic style will
possess the characteristic of a person who promote creativity,
inclusivity, collaboration, and trust-building. Democratic leader is
good for specific county who had democratic government because this
kind of leadership style is participative leadership where the members
are belong in decision making process and by that we can ensure that
everyone have one goal, that is success of our country.
Body
This kind of leadership style is good and standard. This leadership
helps both leader and followers in different ways. Like for example in
implementing community-based disaster preparedness program. It’s not
new for us that the Philippines is prone to natural disaster like
typhoon, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. A barangay coastal are
needs to develop a disaster preparedness plan. The government
collaborate to different peoples and organization in order to
implement that successfully for the sake of our Co-Pilipino. This
scenario highlighted how democratic leadership can strengthen the
community and promotes the knowledge and participation of locals and
other organization. One of the best representation the best democratic
leader is President Dwight D. Eisenhower, the 34th US President.
According to him “leadership consists of nothing but taking
responsibility for everything that goes wrong and giving your
subordinates credit for everything that goes well.” Simply means being
a leader is both an honored and responsibility for the person who
called us leader. President Dwight D. Eisenhower is known as a famous
democratic leader for his inclusive decision-making style and efforts
to build consensus. He established the National Highway System by
involving multiple stakeholders, promoted civil rights by enforcing
desegregation in schools, and created the President's Committee on
Government. Contracts to ensure fair employment practices. Eisenhower
also held regular press conferences to keep the public informed,
demonstrating transparency and accountability in his leadership.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Democratic leadership is a non-ownership-based
management style that empowers employees to make decisions, promoting
creativity and a positive work environment. It involves active
listening, negotiation, and collaboration to resolve conflicts and
solve problems. However, it can take longer to make decisions and may
result in indecision or a lack of accountability. Democratic leaders
are more effective in industries that require diverse input but may
not be suitable in quick-paced or hierarchical workplaces. Despite its
limitations, democratic leadership can contribute to an organization's
success by creating a positive work environment and allowing everyone
to contribute to achieving organizational goals.
Recommendation
Based on the given conclusion, we, the researchers presented following
recommendations and suggestions for democratic leaders and followers:
1. Promoting Collaboration and One goal - to easily accomplish by
the helps of others and it also ensures the unity of direction
where all actions are properly coordinated and requires the all
to perform and carry out the task as one team leading to the same
objectives using one plan.
2. Subordinate of Individual Interest – it is more about
prioritizing our country over personal interest which applies to
all members or in the people of that country.
3. Promoting the Degree of Centralization – this implies the
concentration of decision making at the top management. The
followers will give their decision and the leader will decide the
best for us.
4. Promoting Initiative – leaders will allow the followers to
express their ideas that will benefit the country.
5. Accountability – leaders and followers will be accountable in
their decision and actions.
6. Promoting Esprit de Corps – leaders promote unity among his/her
followers.
