The Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) Chandigarh was
conceived in 1960 as a center of excellence which would endeavour to develop patterns of teaching
in postgraduate medical education in as many branches as possible and attempt to produce
specialists in several disciplines of medicine. It was also envisaged that these specialists would
spread out in the country in various medical colleges and medical institutions and impart medical
education of highest standard to the students and set up nucleus of excellence in their own
institutions. The PGIMER was also given the responsibility to broaden the horizons of medical
knowledge by intensive research in the field of health.

All-India Institute of Medical Sciences was established as an institution of national importance by an

Act of Parliament with the objects to develop patterns of teaching in Undergraduate and Post-graduate
Medical Education in all its branches so as to demonstrate a high standard of Medical Education in
India; to bring together in one place educational facilities of the highest order for the training of
personnel in all important branches of health activity; and to attain self-sufficiency in Post-graduate
Medical Education.
The Institute has comprehensive facilities for teaching, research and patient-care. As provided in the
Act, AIIMS conducts teaching programs in medical and para-medical courses both at undergraduate
and postgraduate levels and awards its own degrees. Teaching and research are conducted in 42
disciplines. In the field of medical research AIIMS is the lead, having more than 600 research
publications by its faculty and researchers in a year. AIIMS also runs a College of Nursing and trains
students for [Link].(Hons.) Nursing post-certificate) degrees.
Twenty-five clinical departments including four super specialty centers manage practically all types
of disease conditions with support from pre- and Para-clinical departments. However, burn cases,
dog-bite cases and patients suffering from infectious diseases are not entertained in the AIIMS
Hospital. AIIMS also manages a 60-beded hospital in the Comprehensive Rural Health Centre at
Ballabgarh in Haryana and provides health cover to about 2.5 lakh population through the Centre for
Community Medicine.

Central Drug Research Institute is one of the first and few laboratories that were established in India
right after its independence. CDRI is among the thirty eight laboratories that are functioning under
the aegis of the council of scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) of India. CDRI is considered to
be a pioneer research organization in the field of biomedical research where all the infrastructure
and expertise are available to develop a drug right from its concept to market. The very latest
techniques and methodologies are employed for developing drugs, diagnostics and vaccines to
combat diseases prevalent among mankind in general and Indian population in particular.

CDRI is a multidisciplinary research laboratory consisting of scientific personnel of various areas of

biomedical sciences. For administrative and scientific purposes the Institute's manpower has been
grouped into 17 R & D divisions and few divisions providing technical and scientific support. In order
to carry out work in cohesion and in a focused environment, the research works have been grouped
into following six major research areas.

Common questions

The ICMR - National Institute of Malaria Research (NIMR) in Delhi contributes to national malaria control and prevention efforts through its research on the vector biology, epidemiology, and control strategies for malaria. By developing early diagnostic tools and evaluating new antimalarial drugs and vaccine candidates, NIMR provides crucial data to refine public health policies. Additionally, NIMR's field studies and collaboration with global health agencies ensure that its findings directly inform effective intervention strategies and that new methodologies are integrated into national efforts to reduce malaria incidence and mortality .

The Centre for Cellular & Molecular Biology (CCMB) plays a crucial role in promoting interdisciplinary research by conducting studies that integrate multiple domains of modern biology. CCMB’s approach benefits scientific progress by fostering collaboration among researchers with diverse expertise, leading to innovative solutions and breakthroughs. By focusing on societally relevant research and application-oriented projects, CCMB provides a platform for translating complex scientific inquiries into tangible outcomes that address fundamental biological questions and solve real-world problems .

The research and educational activities at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education & Research (PGIMER) significantly enhance the landscape of medical education by developing comprehensive teaching patterns in various medical disciplines. PGIMER aims to produce specialists by offering intensive postgraduate programs, which in turn disseminate high-caliber medical education across India. Its focus on intensive research broadens medical knowledge and drives innovations that improve healthcare delivery. By being a hub of excellence, PGIMER influences other medical institutions and helps bridge gaps in healthcare services through advanced clinical training and research contributions .

The ICMR - National Institute for Research in Tribal Health (NIRTH), Jabalpur, plays a pivotal role in promoting health equity by focusing on the unique healthcare challenges faced by tribal populations. NIRTH conducts research to comprehend the health status and disease burden in these communities, addressing communicable and non-communicable diseases prevalent in tribal areas. Through community-based programs and intervention studies, NIRTH develops tailored health strategies that consider socio-cultural factors. This approach not only improves healthcare access and quality for tribal populations but also integrates indigenous knowledge into broader public health systems, thereby addressing inequities and fostering inclusive health policies .

The primary objectives of AIIMS, as outlined in its establishment act, include developing patterns of teaching in both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education across all branches to set a high standard of medical education in India. AIIMS aims to bring together comprehensive educational facilities for training personnel in key health activity areas and to achieve self-sufficiency in postgraduate medical education. These objectives contribute significantly to the broader healthcare system in India by ensuring a consistent supply of highly trained medical professionals and specialists, advancing medical research, and improving patient care standards through its extensive teaching and research programs in 42 disciplines .
