• Distance
The distance is measured in millimeter
accuracy by the phase shift between the
ending and receiving beam.

• Vertical Angle
The Vertical angle is encoded
simultaneously with the distance
measurement. (300°)

• Horizontal Rotation
The horizontal angle is encoded
simultaneously with the distance
measurement. (360°)

Scanner Overview

Preparing an SD Card
The FARO Focus Premium exports recorded scans
on a removable SD card. This memory card can
also be used to create backups of the scanner
settings, to import scanner settings, and to install
firmware updates. SDHC or SDXC cards are highly
recommended. Memory cards with a size up to
512 GB have been verified to operate with the
scanner. The speed of the card must be Class
10/V30 or better

NOTE: The SD card must be formatted in the exFAT file

system. When using an SD card other than one supplied with
the scanner, format it with the scanner format function first.

22
Scanner Overview
1. Open the battery compartment cover. The SD
card slot is in the lower right corner.

2. Insert the formatted SD card with the notched edge

in the direction as illustrated until it clicks.

NOTICE: Confirm the direction of the memory card

before inserting. Using force to insert the memory
card in a wrong direction can damage the SD card,
card slot, or data on the card.

3. Close the cover.

Ejecting the SD Card

To remove an SD card from the scanner, open the SD card slot cover and lightly push the
memory card until it slightly springs out.
NOTICE: Do not eject the memory card while in-use. Do not let the memory card release from
the slot and fall.

Maintenance and care

Cleaning the Mirror

When cleaning the scanner mirror, wear non-powdered gloves. Only clean the
mirror when necessary. Do not touch the mirror’s surface. Turn the scanner off
before cleaning. Use oil-free compressed air, alcohol-free and acetone-free
cleaning fluids, tweezers, and lens tissues.

25
On / Off

• On: the top ON/OFF button for 3 sec

• Off: the top ON/OFF button for 3 sec + Yes to dialogue
box on the screen
– 1 sec press will turn off the screen / repeat to bring back
– 20 sec press: Forced shut down

• DO NOT force shut down the Focus3D using On/Off button because…
– Focus3D has a PC with an integrated hard drive
• The PC must be power down before turning off the power supply
• It may damage the internal PC and might lead to a loss of data

– Forced Shut down only if the Focus3D does not power down or malfunction (expect
longer booting time)

26
EX (1): Know your scanner

• Charge the scanner battery

• Setup the scanner over the tripod
• Insert the SD card + battery into the scanner
• Turn on scanner
• Turn off scanner
• Take out the battery and the SD card
• Put the scanner, battery, and the SD card back to the FARO case

quality of color photos under relatively dark
lighting conditions.

Speed Mode Select Speed Mode to reduce the

scan duration. This happens at the cost of color
picture quality. This mode is fastest and should
be used in bright environments

45
Environmental conditions effects

Light – daylight reduces range and increases noise in scan.

Solutions: scan on overcast or evening conditions;
reduce range to target

Surface Qualities – shiny, highly reflective surfaces are

difficult to scan.
Solution: decrease range, increase angle to object

Color – darker objects reflect less light.

Solution: decrease range, add powder coating,

Movement – Scanner and target object must both be

stationary. Avoid vibration / adapt tripod position!

46
Sensors settings
Use Inclinometer - Enable or disable the
automatic use of the inclination measurement of
the built-in dual-axis compensator (inclinometer)
for the scan registration in SCENE or Sphere
Use Compass - /Use Altimeter -Use GPS -
Enable or disable the automatic use of the built-in
compass' / Altimeter / GPS data for the scan
registration

Recommended Settings - Enable all sensors. Remember that the use

of the inclinometer will increase the scan time.

48
Advanced settings

Advanced Settings:
Clear Contour: Scanner filters incorrect
measurements at the edges of objects.

Clear Sky: Scanner filters points resulting from

hitting no objects at all which happens when
scanning in open skies.

Distance Range: The Distance Range setting

configures the scanner to increase the quality
of the points captured at specified distances.

Recommended Settings - Enables the Clear Contour and Clear

Sky filters. Disables Far Distance Optimization.

Registration thinking in the field
What is Registration?

 Technical term for correction is “transformation”

 In scanning, transformation is done by matching similar points pair rather
than parameters

59
Types of registration

 Target Based: matching Artificial objects (spheres, etc) Connect

scans
 Cloud Based: Comparing Point Clouds (cloud to cloud) together

 Relative Registration: Scans’ positions relative to each

other
Place the
 Local / Coordinated Registration: Scans’ positions are unified
true: to “Control Points”, to local coordinates.. << project
in space
 Georeferenced Registration: Scans’ positions true to:
World with coordinates from (UTM, MTM, etc.)

Registration using cloud2cloud
• Key: Overlap. Look for at least 30% between each scans for easy registration et nice results.
• Prioritize visibility of common planes between scans (ceilings, walls, floors)
• Do “mid scans” in doorways / any links between rooms to maximise overlap: they are often
made without pictures and lower Resolution/Quality.
• Easier to do and verify by doing OnSite Registration (OSR) with Faro S Series and a SCENE
connected through WiFi.
