CHAPTER I: INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

It was December 2019 when a novel coronavirus was first documented in

Wuhan, Hubei Province, China. No one outside China has ever thought of the possibility
of a pandemic that will occur in 2020. Fast forward to March 2020, it was officially
confirmed on six continents and in more than 100 countries.

According to a site called Lab Manager (2020), coronaviruses are a large family
of zoonotic viruses that cause illnesses ranging from common colds to severe
respiratory diseases. The COVID-19 infection is spread from one person to others
through droplets produced from the respiratory system of infected people, usually during
coughing or sneezing.

Philippines’ first confirmed COVID case was identified on January 30, 2020, in
San Lazaro Hospital in Metro Manila. The patient was a 38-year-old Chinese woman.
On March 7, 2020, the Philippines confirmed its first local transmission. Since that day,
the virus has spread with at least one case being recorded in all the provinces, as
stated by Wikipedia.

To limit the spread of the virus, the national government imposed lockdowns, or
community quarantines across the country since March 15, 2020. The pandemic has
heavily impaired a lot of sectors including education. Classes in all levels nationwide
were suspended. Graduation Rites in Philippine schools were also either canceled,
postponed, or held virtually.

During the 45-day enrolment period in public schools that ended July 15, the
DepEd let the parents and guardians answer a Learner Enrollment and Survey Form.
The survey asked them about their preferred distance learning method and their
student’s readiness for distance education. Survey results showed that almost 9 million
parents would go for modular distance learning, where students will study through self-
learning modules. Over 4 million parents favored blended learning— a combination of
learning through modules, online classes, television, and radio, while 3.4 million parents
preferred online learning. (Bernardo J., 2020)

After massive planning, analyzing, and thinking of a better way to continue the
education of the Filipino students without risking any lives, a new school year has finally
emerged. Some schools and universities started in mid-August 2020 while others
started in early October 2020. It’s a very new school year for most Filipino students
because students will no longer go to school every day to attend classes. Schools,

4
universities, students, and teachers settled with Distance Learning Methods. Some
have opted for Modular Learning while some opted for Online Classes.

In Sta. Cruz Learning Center, Modular Distance Learning was applied to all the
students. The school year officially opened on August 24, 2020. Parents of the students
will go to school once a week for the distribution/retrieval of the learning materials.
Every grade level has a different schedule of module retrieval. Students will no longer
go to school for health safety purposes.

It has been observed that in the past nine months, the grade 10 students of Sta.
Cruz Learning Center are losing their interests in their studies. Some students don’t
send outputs, pass modules on time, while there are two who stopped answering their
modules and chose to neglect their studies. It is evident that some students no longer
put education on top of their priority list. Is this partly because of the new learning
method?

The effectiveness of the learning materials used in Modular Distance Learning is

one of the hottest subjects of debate at present. Many people have said their opinions
and views regarding the learning materials but there is no absolute answer to these
questions:

 Did it make an impact on the students?

 Are the students learning effectively through the said method of learning?
 Did the learning materials serve their purposes right?

The aim of this study is to know if the applied learning mode among the grade 10
students of Sta. Cruz Learning Center is effective. This will serve as an assessment of
the efficiency of the given learning materials and the efforts of the students in learning
the lessons given. It has been observed that in the past nine months, the grade 10
students were having different opinions towards Distance Learning. This study will sum
up the various opinions and will answer the questions that have been asked long ago. Is
Modular Distance Learning effective?

5
Statement of the Problem

This study will conclude whether the Modular Distance Learning implied to the
10th-grade students of Sta. Cruz Learning Center is effective or not. Specifically, this
study will answer the following questions:

1. Were the learning materials provided serving their purpose/s?

2. Was Modular Distance Learning too hard for the students?

3. If the students will have to take a surprise test covering all the topics tackled in
the modules, can they pass the test? Are they ready to take the test?

4. Is modular distance learning an effective method for the grade 10 students of

Sta. Cruz Learning Center?

5. Which method of learning do the grade 10 students prefer the most?

a. Face-to-face Classes
b. Modular Distance Learning
c. Online Classes
d. Others

6. Why do most students lack motivation and interest in their studies? Does the
learning method have something to do with it?

6
Significance of the Study

This research is significant to the following:

Students

This study will give them a bigger picture of the outcomes of Modular Distance
Learning. They will realize which mode of learning is more effective for them. By
analyzing the results of this study with their own experiences, they can create ideas to
improve their learning skills for the next school year.

Teachers

The teachers will be able to see the fruits of their labor. This study will give them
the outcomes of Modular Distance Learning. They will be able to know the difference in
the aftereffects of Face-to-face classes and Modular Distance Learning. The teachers
can also formulate other teaching plans so that their students will learn their lessons
effectively.

School Administrators

This study will give the school administrators the upshot of Modular Distance Learning.
They'll receive feedback on the effectiveness of the said mode of learning. They will be
able to devise great ideas in improving the quality of education in the school.

7
Scope and Limitations

This study will include all the enrolled grade 10 students of Sta. Cruz Learning
Center for the school year 2020-2021. The researchers will focus on the effectiveness
of Modular Distance Learning. The pieces of information that will be gathered during the
study will be kept and treated with utmost confidentiality by the researchers.

CHAPTER II: REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Foreign Literature

Modular Distance Learning features individualized instruction that allows learners

to use self-learning modules (SLMs) in print or digital format/electronic copy, whichever
is applicable to the learner. Learners under Modular Distance Learning can also use
other resources such as Learner’s Materials, textbooks, activity sheets, study guides,
and other study materials. The teacher takes the responsibility of monitoring the
progress of the learners. Likewise, learners may ask for assistance from the teacher via
email, telephone, text message/instant messaging, etc. Parents or any member of the
family, on the other hand, may serve as a guide or para-teachers to learners at home.
(Malaya B., 2020)

Usually, teachers will have to deliver appropriate learning materials. A seminal

article by Keegan (1980) presents key aspects of Distance Education. Some of the
elements are: physical separation of teacher and learner, learning occurs in the context
of an educational institution, technical media are used, teacher and learner
communicate, face to face meetings are possible, and an industrial model of providing
education is used. More recently varying definitions of Distance Education seem to be
based on the perspective of various educators and to reflect the educational culture of
each country and IHE. However, some common descriptors seem to be accepted by
most stakeholders in the field.

Distance education is an educational experience where instructors and learners

are separated in time and space (Keegan, 2002) which means it can happen away from
an academic institution and can lead to a degree or credential (Gunawardena, McIsaac,
& Jonassen, 2008).

In the Blended Learning format different teaching strategies and instructional

technology can be used to help individuals who have different learning styles, needs
and interests (Tseng & Walsh Jr., 2016).

There are advantages and disadvantages in taking Distance Education courses.

Some of the advantages are self-paced study, time and space flexibility, time saving (no
commute between home and school) and the fact that a distance learning course often
costs less. Disadvantages include a sense of isolation, the struggle with staying
motivated, lack of face-to-face interaction, difficulty in getting immediate feedback, the
need for constant and reliable access to technology, and occasionally some difficulty
with accreditation (De Paepe, Zhu, & Depryck, 2018; Lei & Gupta, 2010; Venter, 2003;
Zuhairi, Wahyono, & Suratinah, 2006).

9
Most of the literature concerning student perception of Distance Education
courses, both blended and entirely online, involves students who have enrolled in online
courses. Some articles address comparisons of perceptions between face-to-face and
online students regarding Distance Education (Daniels & Feather, 2002; Dobbs, del
Carmen, & Waid-Lindberg, 2017; Hannay & Newvine, 2006; Lanier, 2006).

Local Literature

Nardo, M.T.B. (2017) stated that the use of modules encourages independent
study. One of the benefits of using modules for instruction is the acquisition of better
self-study among students. They develop a sense of responsibility in accomplishing the
tasks provided in the module. With little or no assistance from others, the student s
progress on their own. They are learning how to learn; they are empowered.

Estrada L.P.R. (2021) said that the possibility of anyone genuinely learning their
lessons with the current setup DepEd has for its students and teachers is low. Modules
aren’t substitutes for teachers. Without a knowledgeable person around who can
explain confusing or complicated concepts written in the module, the students won’t
understand it. The modules are not perfect because they differ from school to school,
and their contents depend on the teachers who made them. Some students may not
have a problem understanding their lessons because of a well-explained module, but
others may not be as fortunate. Besides, modular distance learning lacks feedback.
Once modules have been answered and delivered to the teacher, students will only
worry about the next modules coming in. There is little to no feedback concerning what
the students learned and if their answers are correct.

Ms. Mean-Chin (2020) wrote on her article Students’ New Normal: Modular
Distance Learning the common disadvantages of Modular Distance Learning for a
typical Filipino student with a normal family set up. She came up with five common
difficulties: Technical Element, Self-Learning Module’s Reliability, Sense of Authority,
Focus and Concentration, and Parent’s/Guardian’s Educational Background.

a) Technical Element – Technicality involves the availability of devices both

for students and teachers. (Mobile phones, Computers, Laptops, Printers,
and Internet Connection)
b) Self-Learning Module’s Reliability – The content of the modules should
meet the standard learning capacity of each student.
c) Sense of Authority – The luxury of being less pressured. Parents become
teachers, but do not see to be as one.

10
d) Focus and Concentration – Students tend to divert their attention instead
of focusing on and prioritizing their homeschooling first.
e) Parent’s/Guardian’s Educational Background – Not all parents and
guardians are well equipped with proper education.

11
CHAPTER III: RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Method of Research

This study will use the quantitative method. The researchers will distribute a 2-
part questionnaire to the respondents (10th graders of Sta. Cruz Learning Center; S.Y.
2020-2021) of this study. The first part of the study will ask about the students’ points of
view and experiences in Modular Distance Learning, while the second part of the
questionnaire will ask about the lessons tackled in the past 9 months. The second part
of the questionnaire will serve as a post-test covering the lessons from the 1st quarter to
the 4th quarter of the school year 2020-2021. The questionnaires will be used in
collecting quantitative information and data of the respondents' answers to the
questions.
