Design Intent
Span House, located in the Shilaj area in Ahmedabad, are residences with almost identical spaces with
presented a challenge to the Principal Architects, as basic Vastu considerations but strikingly different
they were both the designers and the clients of this interiors that offer an unobstructed view of the
dreamy idea that they would soon call home. Both lush garden outside.
theSpan Houses, built for two families of four each,
SPAN HOUSE | J & D ARCHITECTS 7

Planning and Concept

The architect’s family, and also the client set, included
their parents and uncle’s family who wanted to live
together in one campus with two individual residences. The
requirement was clear from day one - two residences with
common garden space in between for both the families to
unite together. The concept of open-plan interconnects
the core spaces of the living area, dining, and kitchen, with
all its spans getting connected to the garden.

The lower level has public spaces with 2 bedrooms,

formal living, family dining, and kitchen interconnect-
ed as open space. The entrance door was designed to
display grandeur. The vestibule area transitions from
single-height to double-height and adjoins a beautiful
curved staircase. The heart of the residence is the central
family living space.
SPAN HOUSE | J & D ARCHITECTS 11

Light and Ventilation

The house’s entry, the drawing-room, and stairway placed on the east get lovely
morning light. All the major openings of the house are towards the north side to
get diffused lights from full-height glazed windows, and views to the landscape
outside.
SPAN HOUSE | J & D ARCHITECTS 13

Interconnectivity of the two residences

The Living Room is connected to the garden through a verandah and
to the other residence - Span House 2. The interconnectivity between
the two residences is achieved through the living area, the backside
of the kitchen area, and the balcony on the first floor. In terms of form,
the building is planned as L-shaped with both first-floor cantilever
balconies trying to merge each other centrally.

The first floor houses 2 bedrooms, a home theatre and a

small lounge converted to a library. The master bedroom
has the warmth of wooden flooring, in contrast with a
cool and subtle blue texture and fabric back panel with
hanging lights on each side. This room has a slit window,
allowing east lights to enter in the morning, and wider
openings towards the north, for views of the landscape
visible from a balcony. The balcony and the terrace on
the first floor play an important role in the visual con-
nectivity of the two houses.

Facade Design
The exterior design is a mixture of solid, bold,
and floating canopies. These houses have the
warmth of exposed brick with R.C.C finish roofs,
the modernity of marble claddings, and the
character of large glass openings.

Conclusion
Both the houses have been designed
beautifully to cater each and every
requirement. The families are happily living
in their individual Span Houses, united via a
common garden, exemplifying the Indian way
of co-existing.
