Multipliers
Voltage multipliers is a type of
diode rectifier circuit which can
produce an output voltage many
times greater than of the applied
input voltage.
They find applications in various
fields, including power supplies,
signal processing, and high-
voltage generation.

A multiplier circuit that generates a dc output voltage
having amplitude twice the maximum amplitude of
the ac input supply voltage is known as Voltage
Doubler.
Voltage Doubler can be of two types;
Half-Wave Voltage Doubler
Full-Wave Voltage Doubler
Part 1:
Half-Wave
Voltage Doubler
Half-Wave Voltage Doubler
Half Wave Voltage Doubler is a simple circuit
employing a diode and a capacitor.
During the positive half-cycle of the input voltage, the
diode conducts, charging the capacitor.
Half-Wave Voltage Doubler
During the negative half-cycle, the diode blocks the
input, and the capacitor discharges into the load.
The output voltage across the load is approximately
twice the peak voltage of the input.
Circuit Diagram of Half-Wave Voltage Doubler
The circuit is made of two diodes D1 and D2, two capacitors C1 and C2 and an ac supply
voltage. This input ac voltage gets doubled by the circuit and a double amplitude dc signal is
achieved at the output.
Circuit Diagram of Half-Wave Voltage Doubler
Another factor is that simply one-half cycle charges the capacitor C2. Thus, the discharging
voltage consists of ripple (unwanted fluctuations) frequency that is equivalent to supply
frequency of applied input signal.

applications.
Part 2:
Full-Wave
Voltage Doubler
Full-Wave Voltage Doubler
A full-wave voltage doubler is an electronic circuit
that produces an output voltage that is double the
input voltage.
The components of a full-wave voltage doubler are
the same as that of a half-wave voltage doubler, but
the difference is in the circuit.
Full-Wave Voltage Doubler
During the positive cycle of input voltage, the
diode(D1) becomes forward biased and capacitor(C1)
becomes charged to VSmax (peak voltage). During
this period, (D2) becomes reverse biased.
During the negative cycle of input voltage, (D2)
becomes forward biased and capacitor (C2) becomes
charged.
Full-Wave Voltage Doubler
The voltage produced finally at the output is double of
the input voltage.
Circuit Diagram of Full-wave Voltage Doubler
The figure above shows the input and output waveform of full wave voltage doubler:

Disadvantages of Full-Wave Voltage Doubler
Full wave doublers typically require additional components
such as diodes, capacitors, and transformers to implement
compared to half wave doublers. This increases the
complexity of the circuit design and the cost of the overall
system. Additionally, the need for a center-tapped transformer
in some designs can add to the size and expense of the
system.
Voltage multipliers, including both half-wave and full-wave
voltage doublers, find applications in various fields:
1 High-voltage generation for CRT displays.
Applications 2 Power supplies for electronic devices.
3 Signal processing circuits.
4 Voltage multipliers for experimental physics and
research.

CONCLUSION
Voltage multipliers, particularly Half-Wave and Full-Wave Voltage
Doublers, play crucial roles in electronics for voltage stepping.
The choice between half-wave and full-wave voltage doubler depends
on the application's requirements, considering factors like efficiency,
complexity, and power level.
