durability. This method helps to calculate the yield of concrete per cubic meter.
APPARATUS: A) Balance
B) Tamping rod 38mm long
C) Cylindrical measure- inner dia-250mm outerdia-280mm and capacity 0.01cum.
PROCEDURE :

condition is attained.
3) The exterior surface of the cylinder shall be tapped smartly 10to15 times or until no large bubbles of air appear on the
surface of the compacted layer
4) After consolidation of the concrete the top surface shall be struck off and finished smoothly with a flat cover plate using
great care to leave the measure just level full.
5) All excess concrete shall then be cleaned from the exterior.
6) The filled measure jar is weighed(W)
CALCULATION:

compressive strength of hydraulic cement mortars.
B) Mortar is a combination of cement, sand mixed with water. It is used for masonry works such as brick masonry and stone masonry
and for plastering walls columns etc.
C) Common mix ratio of mortar used in masonry works are 1:3 1:4 and 1:6 of cement to sand ratio. For important masonry structures
such as brick walls, 1:3 ratio is used.

compression testing machine etc.
PROCEDURE OF COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF MORTAR:
1) Take 200gm of cement and 600gm of standard sand in the mix ratio :1:3 by weight in a pan.
2) The standard send shall be of quartz of light, gray or whitish variety and shall be free from silt. The sand grains shall be
angular, the shape of grains approximating to the spherical from, elongated and flattened grains being present only in very
small quantities.
3) Standard sand shall pass through 2mm IS sieve and shall be retained on 90 micron IS sieve
with the following particle size
4) Mix the cement and sand in dry condition with a trowel for 1mintues and then add water. The quantity of
water shall be (p/4+3)% of combined weight of cement and sand where, p is the % of
water required to produce a paste of standard consistency determined
earlier
5) Add water and mix it until the mixture is of uniform colour. The time of mixing shall not be
<3minutes&4minutes>.
6) Immediately after mixing the mortar, place the mortar in the cube mould and prod with the help of the

air.
7) If vibrator is used, the period of vibration shall be 2 minutes at the specified speed of 12000(+_) 400
vibrations/minutes. Then place the cube moulds in temperature of 27+_ 2`c and 90% relative humidity :
for 24 hrs.
8) After 24 hrs remove the cubes from the mould and immediately submerge in clean water till testing.
Take out the cubes from water just before testing. Testing should be done on their sides without any
packing.
9) The rate of loading should be 350 kg/cm2/minute and uniform. Test should be conducted for 3 cubes and
report the average valve as the test results for both 7 days and 28day compressive strength.
RESULT OF MORTAR CUBE TEST:

REF ; IS 2386(PART-1)
PURPOSE : To determine having Elongation index of the coarse aggregate.
SIGNIFICANCE : coarse aggregate having more flaky particles will adversely : affect the strength of
concrete
DEFINITION : Presence of elongation aggregates in a mix disturbs the packing of particles and creates more space. Elongation
particles have high ratio of surface area to volume which reduces he workability of concrete. If elongation particles are used for
pavement base course construction, they may break down easily under heavy loads which will necessary to know the elongation of
given aggregate mix.
APPARATUS :
B) Aggregate sample.
B) Digital balance.
C) Elongation gauge or length gauge.
D) Test sieve of 63mm,50mm,40mm,31mm,25mm,20mm,16mm,10mm and 6.3mm.
PROCEDURE :
1) Take the aggregate sample which contains minimum 200 pieces of any fraction.
2) Sieve the sample through mentioned sieve i.e., from 63mm sieve.
3) The aggregate passed through 63mm and retained 6.3mm should not be considered.
4) The aggregate passed through 63mm and retained on 6.3mm and its above sieve is taken along with sieve. Now we
have specified size range for every particle.
5) Now weigh aggregate retained on different sieve and note down the total weight “W1”
6) Each gauge length is 1.8 times the mean dimension of aggregate size range. If particle retained on 10mm and passed
through 16mm size is taken, the it should pass through 23.4mm length
7) The particles which are not passed or retained on the length gauge are weighed which is “W2”.
