The SmartLase File Transfer Utility

The SmartLase File Transfer Utility (SFTU) makes file transfers to and from the
SmartLase fast and easy. The SFTU works like Windows Explorer, presenting
the laser and its User Interface as ordinary drive icons within the familiar
Windows environment. SFTU lets you:
• Back up job files to the PC for safe storage and reuse
• Upgrade firmware to use advanced features
• Perform initial firmware installation on new machines
• Restore firmware where files are missing or corrupted

Using This Guide

The section descriptions below will help you get right to the information you
need:
• Downloading SFTU to Your PC – tells you how to locate, identify, and
copy the SFTU to your PC.
• Backing Up Files to the PC – tells you how to move your SmartLase
data, your valuable customized set of job files, to safe storage on the PC.
From there, you can reuse the data in an upgraded or new SmartLase
unit, or distribute it to multiple machines.
• Upgrading Firmware – tells you how to upgrade the firmware in your
machine to take advantage of new and advanced functions. The
procedures described here assume a typical upgrade, changing from an
existing, working copy of the firmware to a new revision. The exact
procedure steps vary with the given firmware level. This section includes
procedures for upgrading both systems that use firmware version 17 and
later, as well as systems that use version 16 and earlier.
• Installing or Restoring New Firmware – tells you how to establish
working firmware where the machine is brand new and has no firmware
installed, or where the installed files have become corrupted or otherwise
not working. The single procedure described here covers both
circumstances.
• Appendix A: PC to UI Cable Adapter – shows you the pin assignments
on the DB9 connector of the adapter (P/N SL SL391004).
• Appendix B: IP65 Adapter – shows you the pin assignments on the
washdown IP65 rated cable adapter (P/N SL560454).

• Appendix C: Selecting a COM Port – gives you the step-by-step

procedure.

Note Before Starting

Cables
SFTU communicates to the SmartLase system through specific cables and
adapters:
• A data cable (P/N SL560361) connects your PC directly to the laser unit
or to a User Interface (UI) adapter.
• A Programming Adapter Cable (P/N SL391004) interfaces the data cable
to the UI.
• When using an IP65 rated laser, a washdown adapter (P/N SL560454)
interfaces the data cable to the laser.

P/N SL560361 P/N SL391004 P/N SL560454

Make sure you have the necessary cables before using SFTU. If you intend to
use the utility frequently, consider keeping the programming adapter
permanently connected to the RJ11 receptacle on the UI.

Software Environment
• While SFTU file handling behavior is modeled on the familiar Windows
Explorer, the utility creates its own distinct environment. You manipulate
files entirely within the SFTU. NOTE: Do not move files between the
two environments.

• To maintain effective data communication, do not run more than one

instance of SFTU at any one time.

Backing Up Files to the PC

Backing Up Files to the PC

Your accumulation of customized, working job files is a valuable asset you’ll want
to preserve and protect. You’ll want to store a safety backup copy of this data to
the PC whenever you:
• Upgrade the firmware
• Shut down the line for washdown or other routine maintenance
• Physically relocate the SmartLase machine or the entire production line
• Duplicate the working data on a new machine
• Migrate the data to additional SmartLase machines

Selecting Files for Backup

The SmartLase uses many distinct file types, containing data used for different
tasks. Normal use leaves many files unchanged. These files can be left alone
or safely overwritten with new versions, and they are of little importance
regarding backups.

The far more significant files are those that you customize and modify as part of
your day-to-day operations. These are the files that you need to back up and
preserve. Most typically, these will include: job files; the text legends you create
and variables; and, the global machine setup parameters that you’ve
established for the hardware at your site.

You create custom job files and select setup variables with the User Interface.
(Future versions of the SmartLase firmware will permit creation and modification
of these using Markem-Imaje’s CoLOS software.)

You may modify other file types using a suite of tools Markem-Imaje provides for
use on the PC. Pre-defined File Format files (.pff) and font files (.slf) are always
modified on the PC. The files that contain the many varieties of user-defined
dynamic data fields can be modified with the UI or with a PC-based utility. In any
case, you need to remember what files you modified so that you include them in
your backup.

Upgrading Firmware

Upgrading Firmware
The operations of SL100i series SmartLase are controlled by a firmware
program, separately resident in the memory of both the laser unit and its
associated User Interface (UI) device. Using SFTU, anyone with a
Windows-based PC can upgrade the existing firmware in both hardware devices.

NOTE: To operate properly, both devices must run the same version level
firmware.

The laser and the UI can be upgraded independently in different SFTU sessions.
The following procedures describe individual, one-device upgrade instructions.
However, be aware that both devices can be upgraded within the same
session, saving several navigational steps and password entry. As you upgrade
the first device in a session, a password prompt appears:

Type in the 1143, password, and click OK to continue with the procedure.

NOTE: In all situations where you upgrade both devices, always upgrade
the laser first.

Upgrades Starting From Different Firmware

Versions
Version 17 or higher firmware introduced the ability to upgrade the laser by
connecting the data cable (SL560361) directly to the device instead of needing an
initial connection to the UI to establish data communications. This direct
connection avoids hot swapping and the potential for damaging communication
chips cable, and it streamlines the procedure. For the many 100i series units
already installed that use version 16 or earlier version firmware, the older
upgrade procedure remains included in this guide.

10003905ad 6/08 13
®
SmartLase File Transfer Utility User Guide
Upgrading Firmware
If you are unsure of what version firmware your system is using, you can
determine which one by doing the following:

1. Turn the system power on, and look at the display on the UI.

2. From the Home screen, press the S key to reveal the following screen:

Note how the firmware revision levels appear at the top of the screen. The
firmware instances associated with both your laser (LSR) and your User
Interface (UI) should show the same revision level as illustrated above. (The
number preceding the LSR designates the power rating of the laser.)
Once you have determined your current firmware level, you can continue with the
appropriate upgrade procedure:
• If you have version 16 or earlier firmware, use the procedure found in the
section titled Upgrading with Version 16 or Earlier Firmware.
• If you have version 17 or later, use the procedure found in the section
titled Upgrading with Version 17 or Later Firmware.
Whatever firmware level you’re starting with, you need to understand how the
SFTU uses firmware image files, and, if your upgrade includes your UI, you need
to know how to prepare your UI hardware beforehand. Both topics are
discussed in the following sections.

NOTE: The procedures outlined in this section describe the standard

upgrade to a new level of firmware from a currently installed, working
copy. If you want to load firmware for the first time, or if you want to
replace corrupted or otherwise non-working firmware, see the section
titled – Installing or Restoring New Firmware.

Upgrading Firmware

Using SFTU and the Firmware Files

There is a distinct firmware image file associated with each hardware component
that you need to acquire along with SFTU. The files contain the actual firmware
program that will reside in flash memory and other instructions that format the
files. The file names identify the language used, the version level of the
software, and the associated device. For example:

Preparing the UI Hardware for Upgrade

To upgrade the firmware on the UI, you need to have the programming adapter
(SL391004) installed. With version 16 or earlier software, upgrading the laser
involves initial communication through the UI so that likewise, the programming
adapter must be in place. The procedure below describes how to prepare the UI
hardware to use the adapter.
