On Friday 9th December 2023, we broke up for holidays. We were full of
excitement because we were going on a long vacation. I also knew that I
would meet some other children on vacation this time around. The previous
night, I had made my holiday plans. One of the
programs on it was to spend three weeks at my maternal grandparent’s
home.
After one week at home, Mum drove Ageno and me to Mwelo village. I had
packed some of my books and other writing materials, I knew I was going to
have remedial lessons with my cousin. Grandmother was delighted to receive
us. The first week went on very well. I had followed my holiday plans well,
doing all the activities as programmed.
Towards the end of the second week, I met Ondyek, a boy in the
neighbourhood. He had an attractive red and yellow sports bicycle. I admired
the bicycle and begged him to allow me to ride it. He accepted. Every
evening, he would go with me down the road to ride the bicycle. I got so
used to him that I could fail to follow my holiday plan on some days.
One Tuesday morning, I woke up in a strange surrounding. My head was tied
with a white band and the left leg hanging on a string attached to a bed.
Guess where I was. In the hospital! I had no idea what had happened on me.
Ondyek and I had got ourselves involved in a terrible bicycle accident on a
