The bearing housing cover 38 inclndes am annular collar 42 having a Range 44 ‘mountable to an exterior surface ofthe bearing housing 30. ‘When mounted, the cover 38 atleast partially encloses the bearing housing 30 and aids in sealing il within the bearing housing 30. In the shown embodiment, although not neees- US 11,933,187 B2 3 sarily the case in all embodiments, the flange 44 includes @ plurality of holes 46 aranged in a bolt pattern for mounting ‘o the bearing housing 30, ilustrtively twelve holes 46 bout the perimeter ofthe Range 44. The width ofthe flange “44 may vary, for instance based on the structural roquire= mens ofthe cover 38 othe sing ofthe exterior surface of the bearing, housing 30. The mounting oF fastening of the bearing howsing cover 38 to the bearing housing 30 will be sdiscussed in futher detail below. The impeller baile 40 is integrally formed with the annular collar 42 and includes a generally annular body with, ‘front bale face 48, area bale face SO and a central ble ‘opening $2. Ilusrativey, a rounded bevel edge $4 joins the ‘annulae collar 42 to the rear bale face 50, althoigh other teanstionstructares may be contemplated as well. When the bearing housing cover 38 is mounted to the hearing housing 430, the front hale face 48 is positioned adjacent the Jmpeller rear face 28. As such, the air pressure leaving the impeller 24 drops as it approaches the centerline of the ‘engine 10, i¢. axis 1, and enters the bearing ousing 30, ‘This aids in sealing the bearing housing 30 andor provides ‘cooling flow F within the bearing housing 30, as will be discussed in further detail below. In some eases, the impeller baflle 40 may be manufactured to have a complex profile shape based on the engine’s 10 particular air system requine= ments, For instance, the Foat baile face 48 may have @ profile that follows that ofthe impeller rear face 28. Other shapes or profiles lar the impeller baille 40 may be contem- Plated as well ‘A plurality of stiffening efements 56 extend between the rear bale face 50 and the annular collar 42. The stiffening ‘elements $6, also refered to as enforcement elements, may be integral with the bearing housing cover 38, ic. formed from a single piece. As can be seen in FIG, 3B, the six air outlets S8b are disposed oa 0 o 4 the flange 44, Other numbers and pathways for the air passages $8 may be contemplated as well. As will be iscussed in further detail elow, the air passages S8 may divert a portion of the airflow F from the impeller rear face 28 to the bearing housing 30 and/or to components down- Stream of the beating housing 30 for various engine cnoling and sealing requirements. In the shown ease, the number of inlets S8a corresponds to the number of outlets $85. In the shown ease, the inlets $8q and outlets 58) are slot-like ‘openings disposed about the circumference of the central bale opening on te font baile ace 48, within the annular collar 42 or on the finge 4. Other shapes, postions and sizes of inlets S8a andlor outlets SH) may be contemplated fs well, for instance based on the airlow andior sealing requirements of the various components of the hearing housing 30, ‘As can be seen in FIG. 2, the beating housing cover 38 is ‘mountable to the bearing housing 30 at an upstream end thereof. The bearing housing cover 38 may also be referred ‘oasdhe front bearing housing cover 38, while a rear bearing housing cover 60 is mountable to a downstream end of the bearing hosing 30. A plurality of bolts 62 or other like Tiasteners may be used 10 fasten the bearing housing covers 38, 60 tothe bearing housing 20, Ilvstrativey, each bolt 62 ‘nay passthrough a bolt hole 46 onthe Mange 44 ofthe front bearing housing cover 38, through a bore 64 in the bearing housing 30 and then trough a eorresponding bolt hole (not shown) in the rear bearing housing cover 60. In some cases, the bolt holes 46 infront bearing housing cover 38 and/or the bolt holes in the rear bearing hovsing cover 60 may be threaded for secure attachment. In some cases, the bore 64 may be threaded as well. ther forms of attachment may be contemplated as well ‘The rear bearing housing cover 60 includes a plurality of | air passapes 66. For instance larger engines with diferent dynamic responses may require thicker ball 40 to ensure structural inogrty. Altematively, in smaller engines, a thinner bale 40 may be used to reduce the overall weight ofthe engine 19, Incerain eases, the thickness of bale 40 may vary, for instance in radial or cicumferental directions, For instan the ballle 40 may be thinner atthe circumferential postions where the stiffening elements 86 meet the ear bale fee $0. In addition, the bale 40 may be thicker at other circum- erential positions © provide additional siructure where rocestary. Altematively, the baffle 40 may he thicker towards the central balle opening 52 and become thinnee towards the radial outer edge of the balle 40. The reverse ‘configuration may be contemplated as well The thekness of the bale 40 may also vary based on the dynamic tuning requirements of the halle 40, 25 will be discussed in further deiail below Referring to FIG. 4, the stifling elements 86! may have shapes or sizes that vary from one tothe other llastratively, ‘each alternating web 86 terminates ata different height on the annular collar 42, alternating between reaching midway up the annolar collar 42 and reaching a point just below the flange 44. Such variations in height may, for instance al in reducing the weight ofthe bearing housing cover 38, provide additional rigidity in strategic locations, andor aid in ‘dynamically tuning the baffle 40. In addition, the webs 86 shown in FIG. 4 are thicker than those in FIG. 3B, for instance for added streagth Referring to FIG. 8, in the shown case the stiffening ‘elements 56" are inthe form of ribs 36" extending from the rear baille face 80 to the annular collar 42. The number. spacing and thickness ofthe ribs 86" may vary, for instance based on structural andor weight requirements. The posi- tioning ofthe ends ofthe ribs 56” on the rear baile face 50 and/or on the annular collar 42 may vary as well In some ‘eases, the ribs 56” may be hollow, for instance to save weight, while in other eases they may be solid for added rigidity: Combinations of Dollow and solid ribs $6", for Jnstnce in alternating onder, may be contemplated wel. Altemative o atonal steuetueal feaares may be contem= plated as well, for instance struts, dimples and/or lightening holes, Such features may contribute towards inereasing the structural rigidity andor reducing the weight ofthe bearing housing cover 38, as well as aiding in dynamically tuning the ballle 40, ‘As discussed above, the bearing housing cover 38 withthe Jntgrated impeller balle 40 is manufactured or otherwise formed from a single piece of material. Various mamafac- turing techniques may’ he contemplated, sich as machining from a solid materia, casting, or other suitable techniques Compared 10 traditional non-integrated impeller alles, there are fewer required manufacturing steps, asthe hafle ‘does not need fo be stamped aod then welded or brazed 10 the bearing housing. In addition, the part tolerances between the balle 40 and bearing housing cover 38 may be improved relative to non-integrated impeller baffles as the two parts ‘are integrated. AS there ate fewer welding andlor braving, joins that could potentially fail, the risk of loose hardware may be lowered with the integrated baile 40 design. The herein described impeller bale 40 may be easier to mount for assemble to the bearing ousing than non-inteprated 0 o 6 Dalles due tits integration inthe bearing housing cover 38, and the reduced part count may reduce the required assem. by ime. "As discussed above, the integrated impeller baffle 40 of the bearing housing cover 38 may be dynamically tuned. As the halle's 400 natural frequencies are typically within running range ofthe engine 19, such dynamic tning may be done to prevent undesirable vibrations. As the hearing housing cover 38 withthe integrated impeller baile 40 is ‘manufactured from a single part, there may be an opport- nity during the design process to tune the bafle’s 40 dynamic response to avoid unwanted natural Irequencies. As discussed above, such tuning may be done by optimizing the stiffening elements $6, for instance by altering the type. spacing, and number of stiffening elements 56, Such tuning ‘may also be done by varying the thickness ofthe bale 4. Other dynamic tuning methods may be contemplated as wel. ‘The embodiments described in this document provide non-limiting examples of possible implementations of the present technology.
