mate the combustor 16 aid difser 22, A centrifugal com-
pressor 14 as in FIG. 1, which may inelude multiple axial
stage rotor, i followed by an impeller 24 and a coverplate
26, The centrifugal compressor 14 supplies pressurized air to
the combustor 16, the hot gases from which dive a turbine
18.98 in FIG. 1, The impeller 24 has a rear face 28 behind
‘whieh the airswirls at high velocity due to the rotation ofthe
impeller 24. This swirling, high-velocity sir tens to lower
the pressure of the “rear face at”, i. the alow F imme-
ately behind (.c. downstream of) the impeller rear face 28
‘As further shown ia FIG, 2, bearing housing 30, located
downstream from the impeller 24, houses a bearing 32
‘whieh rotationally supports the main engine shaft 20, upon
Which the centfigal compressor 14 and turbine 18 are
‘mounted. foe example, The bearing 32, housed within an
interior chamber of the bearing housing 30, i lubricated and
cooled with ol circulated by a hbrication system within the

annular collar 42 and includes a generally annular body with,
‘front bale face 48, area bale face SO and a central ble
‘opening $2. Ilusrativey, a rounded bevel edge $4 joins the
‘annulae collar 42 to the rear bale face 50, althoigh other
teanstionstructares may be contemplated as well. When the
bearing housing cover 38 is mounted to the hearing housing
430, the front hale face 48 is positioned adjacent the
Jmpeller rear face 28. As such, the air pressure leaving the
impeller 24 drops as it approaches the centerline of the
‘engine 10, i¢. axis 1, and enters the bearing ousing 30,
‘This aids in sealing the bearing housing 30 andor provides
‘cooling flow F within the bearing housing 30, as will be
discussed in further detail below. In some eases, the impeller
baflle 40 may be manufactured to have a complex profile
shape based on the engine’s 10 particular air system requine=

base 560 and slightly curved, although other shapes and
sizes may be contemplate as well. The web end S6e where
the web 86 meets the annular collar 42 is reinforoed for
‘addled support. The number, thickness and spacing of the
stiffening elements 56, illstatively the webs 56, may vary,
Tor instance hased on the structural requirements of the
‘engine 10, For instance, while the webs 56 shown in FIG. 3B,
‘are spaced equally fom one another, in otber cases the
spacing between the webs $6 (or othe sifening elements)
may vary along the circumference of the bearing housing
‘cover 38, In alton, various parameters of the ilfening
‘elements 86 can be adjusted to vary or tune the dynamic
response of the impeller baile 40 to reduce vibrations, as
will be discussed in further detail below.

passages $8 may be contemplated as well. As will be
iscussed in further detail elow, the air passages S8 may
divert a portion of the airflow F from the impeller rear face
28 to the bearing housing 30 and/or to components down-
Stream of the beating housing 30 for various engine cnoling
and sealing requirements. In the shown ease, the number of
inlets S8a corresponds to the number of outlets $85. In the
shown ease, the inlets $8q and outlets 58) are slot-like
‘openings disposed about the circumference of the central
bale opening on te font baile ace 48, within the annular
collar 42 or on the finge 4. Other shapes, postions and
sizes of inlets S8a andlor outlets SH) may be contemplated
fs well, for instance based on the airlow andior sealing
requirements of the various components of the hearing
housing 30,
‘As can be seen in FIG. 2, the beating housing cover 38 is
‘mountable to the bearing housing 30 at an upstream end
thereof. The bearing housing cover 38 may also be referred
‘oasdhe front bearing housing cover 38, while a rear bearing
housing cover 60 is mountable to a downstream end of the
bearing hosing 30. A plurality of bolts 62 or other like
Tiasteners may be used 10 fasten the bearing housing covers

the bolt holes 46 infront bearing housing cover 38 and/or the
bolt holes in the rear bearing hovsing cover 60 may be
threaded for secure attachment. In some cases, the bore 64
may be threaded as well. ther forms of attachment may be
contemplated as well
‘The rear bearing housing cover 60 includes a plurality of |
air passapes 66. When the bearing housing covers 38, 60 are
‘mounted tothe bearing housing 30, ar passageways in fait
communication with the air passages $8, 66, for instances
the hores 64, allow airflow F ta flow between sir passages
‘58 inthe front bearing housing cover 38 and the air passages
66 in the rear hearing housing cover 60. Por instance, air
may pass through hollow portions of the bolts 62 them-
selves, andor around the bolts 62 within the bores 64, As
discussed above, the arllow F ean be diverted to various
components downstream of the beuring housing 30 for
cooling andor sealing purposes. The dimensions of the air
passages 88, 6 may vary, for instance based on the evaling
Andi sealing needs of these various components
"As shots in FIGS, 2 and 3 to 3B, the bearing housing
cover 38 further includes an inner ring 68 and a lip 70 %0
cntrol the iacoming air entering the bearing housing 30.
The width ofthe inner ring 68 may vary to alter the size of
the central ballle opening §2, for instance in response to
engine requirements for temperature and pressure gradients
‘When installed, the lip 70 extends radially inwardly into
close proximity with an outer surface of « runner 72 sup-
porting the front carbon seal 3410 thus define a narrow air
‘ap 74 through which the arlow F may enter the bearing
hotising 30, The inner diameter of the lip 70 may be coated
fora labyrinth seal with the summer 72. In some cases, the
ailow F entering through the naerow gap 74-may aid in
sealing the front earbon seal 34, The dovsnstream end ofthe
bearing housing 30 may similarly include a narrow air gap
714 formed by an onter surface of «runner 72 Airflow F may
thus he provided to the downstream end of the hearing
‘housing 30, fr instance to aid in sealing the rear carbon seal

passages in the rear bearing housing cover 60, although
‘ther airflow sourees may be contemplated as well
In different cases, the thickness of the baflle 40, ie
between the fot ball face 48 and the rear bale face 80,
‘can vary. For instance larger engines with diferent dynamic
responses may require thicker ball 40 to ensure structural
inogrty. Altematively, in smaller engines, a thinner bale
40 may be used to reduce the overall weight ofthe engine
19, Incerain eases, the thickness of bale 40 may vary, for
instance in radial or cicumferental directions, For instan
the ballle 40 may be thinner atthe circumferential postions
where the stiffening elements 86 meet the ear bale fee $0.
In addition, the bale 40 may be thicker at other circum-
erential positions © provide additional siructure where
rocestary. Altematively, the baffle 40 may he thicker
towards the central balle opening 52 and become thinnee
towards the radial outer edge of the balle 40. The reverse
‘configuration may be contemplated as well The thekness of
the bale 40 may also vary based on the dynamic tuning
requirements of the halle 40, 25 will be discussed in further
deiail below
Referring to FIG. 4, the stifling elements 86! may have
shapes or sizes that vary from one tothe other llastratively,
‘each alternating web 86 terminates ata different height on
the annular collar 42, alternating between reaching midway
up the annolar collar 42 and reaching a point just below the
flange 44. Such variations in height may, for instance al in
reducing the weight ofthe bearing housing cover 38, provide
additional rigidity in strategic locations, andor aid in
‘dynamically tuning the baffle 40. In addition, the webs 86
shown in FIG. 4 are thicker than those in FIG. 3B, for
instance for added streagth
Referring to FIG. 8, in the shown case the stiffening
‘elements 56" are inthe form of ribs 36" extending from the
rear baille face 80 to the annular collar 42. The number.
spacing and thickness ofthe ribs 86" may vary, for instance
based on structural andor weight requirements. The posi-
tioning ofthe ends ofthe ribs 56” on the rear baile face 50
and/or on the annular collar 42 may vary as well In some
‘eases, the ribs 56” may be hollow, for instance to save
weight, while in other eases they may be solid for added
rigidity: Combinations of Dollow and solid ribs $6", for
Jnstnce in alternating onder, may be contemplated wel.
Altemative o atonal steuetueal feaares may be contem=
plated as well, for instance struts, dimples and/or lightening
holes, Such features may contribute towards inereasing the
structural rigidity andor reducing the weight ofthe bearing
housing cover 38, as well as aiding in dynamically tuning
the ballle 40,
‘As discussed above, the bearing housing cover 38 withthe
Jntgrated impeller balle 40 is manufactured or otherwise
formed from a single piece of material. Various mamafac-
turing techniques may’ he contemplated, sich as machining
from a solid materia, casting, or other suitable techniques
Compared 10 traditional non-integrated impeller alles,
there are fewer required manufacturing steps, asthe hafle
‘does not need fo be stamped aod then welded or brazed 10
the bearing housing. In addition, the part tolerances between
the balle 40 and bearing housing cover 38 may be improved
relative to non-integrated impeller baffles as the two parts
‘are integrated. AS there ate fewer welding andlor braving,
joins that could potentially fail, the risk of loose hardware
may be lowered with the integrated baile 40 design. The
herein described impeller bale 40 may be easier to mount
for assemble to the bearing ousing than non-inteprated

Dalles due tits integration inthe bearing housing cover 38,
and the reduced part count may reduce the required assem.
by ime.
"As discussed above, the integrated impeller baffle 40 of
the bearing housing cover 38 may be dynamically tuned. As
the halle's 400 natural frequencies are typically within
running range ofthe engine 19, such dynamic tning may be
done to prevent undesirable vibrations. As the hearing
housing cover 38 withthe integrated impeller baile 40 is
‘manufactured from a single part, there may be an opport-
nity during the design process to tune the bafle’s 40
dynamic response to avoid unwanted natural Irequencies. As
discussed above, such tuning may be done by optimizing the
stiffening elements $6, for instance by altering the type.
spacing, and number of stiffening elements 56, Such tuning
‘may also be done by varying the thickness ofthe bale 4.
Other dynamic tuning methods may be contemplated as
wel.
