TitanFall 2’s DDOS Problem

TitanFall 2 is a game unlike any other, those who have played it have immediately fallen

in love with it. They fell in love with the movement, the gameplay, and the different titans, But

that doesn’t mean this game has its problems. This game is a fan favorite mainly because of its

gameplay, although its graphics look good. One of the biggest problems this franchise has is the

issue of Distributed Denial of Service (DDOS) attacks in the gaming industry. This is not a good

thing because gamers do not want to play a game with a big possibility of getting hacked. This

problem also causes game companies like Respawn, Epic Games, and Ea to not make money

effectively.

Titanfall 2 is a game about a company, called Interstellar Manufacturing Company

(IMC), that is colonizing planets and then abusing them for natural resources. A small rebellious

group known as Special Recon Squadron Militia (SRS Militia) rose and decided to protect these

planets from devastation. Titanfall 2 takes place late in the galactic warfare campaign.

This has not only plagued Titanfall 2, but also its predecessor as well, which is no longer

playable due to this issue (Clayton, 2022). The hacker who caused this was originally known to

fans of the franchise by his username Jeanue, but the supposed hacker was a decoy to enact a

plan that would eventually cause the original game to get shut down. The plan was to get fame,

by initially getting the support of fans, and then to hack their fans without getting caught,

unfortunately, they did get caught, but at a price. The Titanfall game was shut down by the

hacker and no servers for the game currently exist, meaning if you buy the first game, it will not

work.

A DDOS attack is a way of overloading a server with too many requests from too many

locations at the same time, causing the server to shut down and the entire game population in -the

server automatically gets kicked (Computer Express, 2022). Luckily this type of cyberattack is

only targeted towards the major streamers of the game and people who upload on platforms like

Youtube and Twitch. Those unfortunate enough to be streaming are added on something called a

blacklist, which is a system that lists your in-game information, causing you to be put on a list of

people to be targeted for DDOS attacks. For example, you are playing football, the game just

started and you suddenly get told that you have to leave, you normally would be very upset and

confused. People who don’t play video games will not see this as a big deal, but people who play

this game or games, in general, will know that this is an issue.

For example, I was watching a Youtuber named Macro, making fun of Titanfall 2, who

streamed the game before this incident, but when he logged into a game of multiplayer, he

realized he was on the blacklist. This caused him to be unable to play multiplayer indefinitely.

Although, you could ask Respawn, the company that developed the game, to get you off the

blacklist. If this is happening to you, reach out to Respawn. Although the company has addressed

the situation in 2021, they have done nothing about it. The company needs to do something about

it or else a fan-favorite game will not be playable anymore. Google has also been DDOS

attacked but they did not leave it be, they fixed the problem. This Google attack happened on

October 10th, 2023. They could ban the hacker’s accounts and call it a day, or they could fix the

game's software in a way that could make it hard to hack. Whatever they need to do to fix the

game, they should do it as long as the game is playable, otherwise it will end up like Titanfall 1,

indefinitely unplayable. Titanfall 1 took place in the same universe as Titanfall 2, but it was shut

down years ago mainly because of the DDOS problem. The game cut sales for it after the

company figured out that the game didn’t functionally work. Most of the games getting hacked

are major money makers that the company has developed. Some companies have prevented this

through a method called ban-waves, which is when after a certain amount of time, they ban a lot

of hackers from different places simultaneously. This is a good thing because it decreases the

chance of you getting hacked, if respawn could do this with Titanfall 2, it would be extremely

beneficial to the people who want to play without worrying about getting hacked. This

knowledge of DDOS issues, why it is bad, and how to stop it, is proof that Respawn needs to do

better things to Titanfall 2 in order for that game to survive. Fans are even going as far as to hate

Respawn for the problem and claiming that they do not deserve the game, which is a bit hard to

believe given the circumstances. They can do better things, most people and fans of the game

have proved it time, and time again. The game needs to be better-taken care of, Fans and

Respawn know this, and they also know that to fix a problem, you can’t wait for it to go away,

you need to fix it yourself. As long as the process works, whether it be ban waves or an upgrade

in software, the fans will be happy.
