1. GAS TRANSPORT IN VACUUM SYSTEM
Gas transport in vacuum systems involves the movement of gas molecules within the system,
which can be described by various parameters. Understanding these parameters is crucial for
designing and operating vacuum systems effectively.

KEY PARAMETERS IN GAS TRANSPORT

1.1 Throughput:
Definition: Throughput is the measure of the amount of gas passing through a vacuum system
per unit time. It is typically measured in units such as Torr-liters per second (Torr L/s) or Pascals
cubic meters per second (Pa m³/s).
Formula:

Q=P×S
Where:
Q is the throughput.
P is the pressure (e.g., in Torr or Pa).
S is the pumping speed (e.g., in L/s or m³/s).
Explanation: Throughput describes how much gas is being evacuated from the system. Higher
throughput means a more efficient evacuation process.

1.2 Pumping Speed (S)


Definition: Pumping speed refers to the volume of gas that a vacuum pump can remove from a
system per unit time at a given pressure. It is usually expressed in liters per second (L/s) or cubic
meters per second (m³/s).

Factors Affecting Pumping Speed:

Type of Pump: Different pumps (e.g., rotary vane, diffusion, turbo molecular pumps) have
different pumping speeds.

Gas Type: Different gases have different viscosities and molecular weights, which affect how
easily they can be pumped.
Pressure Range: The pumping speed can vary with pressure; some pumps are more efficient at
lower or higher pressures.

1.3 Pump Down Time

Definition: Pump down time is the time required for a vacuum pump to reduce the pressure in a
vacuum chamber from atmospheric pressure to a desired lower pressure.

Factors Influencing Pump Down Time:

Volume of the Vacuum Chamber (V): Larger chambers take longer to evacuate.

Pumping Speed (S): Higher pumping speed reduces pump down time.

Initial and Final Pressures (Po to Pf): The range of pressure change affects the time needed.

Calculation Example: If we approximate the pump down process as exponential, the time to
pump down can be estimated using:

t = V/S ln(Po/Pf)

Where V is the volume of the chamber, S is the pumping speed, Po is the initial pressure, and Pf
is the final pressure.

Application: Understanding pump down time is crucial for planning the evacuation process and
optimizing vacuum system operations.

1.4 Ultimate Pressure

Definition: Ultimate pressure is the lowest pressure that a vacuum system can achieve after
continuous pumping. It represents the limit of how "empty" a vacuum can be made.

Factors Influencing Ultimate Pressure:

Type of Pump: Different pumps achieve different ultimate pressures. For example, rotary
pumps may achieve pressures around 10-3 Torr, while turbo molecular or ion pumps can reach
10-9 Torr or lower.

System Design: Leak-tight design, clean surfaces, and the absence of outgassing materials

2. FORE-VACUUM PUMPS
Fore-vacuum pumps, also known as roughing pumps, are the first stage of vacuum pumps
used to reduce the pressure in a vacuum system from atmospheric pressure (around 760 Torr or
101 kPa) to a lower pressure. These pumps operate in the "rough vacuum" range, typically from
atmospheric pressure down to about 10-3 Torr. They are used as the primary pump in systems
or in conjunction with high-vacuum pumps that need a low-pressure environment to operate
efficiently.

2.1 Rotary Oil Pumps


Rotary oil pumps, often called rotary vane pumps,
are a type of positive displacement pump commonly
used in vacuum technology to achieve low to medium
vacuum levels. They are the most widely used type of
fore-vacuum pump and operate by creating a vacuum
through the mechanical action of rotating vanes.
Working Principle of Rotary Oil Pumps

Rotating Vanes:

The pump consists of a rotor that is mounted eccentrically inside a cylindrical housing. The
rotor contains spring-loaded vanes that move radially as it rotates. As the rotor spins, the vanes
are pushed outward by centrifugal force, forming a tight seal between the rotor and the inner wall
of the housing.

Gas Trapping and Compression:

The gas enters the pump through an inlet port and gets trapped in the compartments formed
between the vanes. As the rotor turns, these compartments decrease in size, compressing the gas.
The compressed gas is then expelled through an exhaust port.

Oil Sealing and Lubrication:

Oil is used to seal the vanes, fill small gaps, and provide lubrication to the moving parts. The oil
helps maintain a tight seal between the vanes and the housing, ensuring efficient gas
compression. The oil also absorbs the heat generated during compression and protects the pump
components from wear.

2.2 Sorption Pumps


A sorption pump is a type of oil-free vacuum pump that uses a cold surface, often cooled by
liquid nitrogen, to adsorb gases and create a vacuum. These pumps are primarily used for
achieving low to medium vacuum levels in applications requiring ultra-clean environments.
Sorption pumps are especially valued for their lack of oil and moving parts, which makes them
suitable for processes where contamination must be minimized, such as in cryogenics,
cleanrooms, or semiconductor manufacturing.

Working Principle of Sorption Pumps

The sorption pump operates based on the adsorption process, where gas molecules are trapped
on the surface of a solid material, typically a zeolite or other porous material. The material's
surface is cooled to cryogenic temperatures, typically using liquid nitrogen (77 K), to increase
the efficiency of adsorption.

Cooling the Sorbent Material:

A material like zeolite or activated charcoal is used due to its high surface area and porous
structure. The sorbent is cooled using liquid nitrogen, enhancing its ability to trap gas molecules.

Adsorption of Gases:
Gas molecules are attracted to and trapped on the surface of the sorbent material. As the sorbent's
surface gets colder, the adsorption rate increases, reducing the pressure inside the vacuum
chamber. This adsorption process effectively "removes" gases from the vacuum chamber,
creating a vacuum.

Regeneration of the Sorbent:

After a period, the sorbent material becomes saturated with gas molecules. The pump must be
regenerated by heating the sorbent to release the adsorbed gases. This is typically done by
stopping the cooling and allowing the sorbent to return to room temperature, releasing the
trapped gases, which can then be pumped away by a separate backing pump.

Sorption pumps can typically achieve vacuums in the range of 10-2 to 10-3 Torr, depending on
the design and materials used.

Oil-Free Operation:

The lack of oil eliminates the risk of contamination, making sorption pumps ideal for ultra-clean
environments.

No Moving Parts:

Sorption pumps do not have any mechanical components, which results in quieter operation and
less maintenance compared to pumps with rotating or sliding parts.

Cryogenic Cooling:

Requires the continuous use of liquid nitrogen or other cryogenic materials to keep the sorbent
material at optimal operating temperatures.

Limited Gas Handling:

Sorption pumps are particularly effective for non-reactive gases, such as nitrogen and oxygen.
They are less effective for light gases like hydrogen or helium, which are more difficult to
adsorb.

Advantages of Sorption Pumps

Limited Throughput: Sorption pumps are not designed for continuous operation with high gas
loads and are typically used in batch processes. Regeneration Requirement: After a certain
period of operation, the sorbent material must be regenerated by heating, which can slow down
the process and require additional equipment (e.g., a backing pump). Requires Cryogenic
Cooling: The pump relies on liquid nitrogen or similar coolants, which can add operational costs
and complexity.

Application of Sorption Pumps

3. HIGH VACUUM PUMPS


High vacuum pumps are used to achieve vacuum levels below 10⁻³ Torr. They are typically
employed in applications requiring very low pressures, such as semiconductor manufacturing,
scientific research, and space simulation chambers. Unlike lower vacuum pumps (e.g., rotary
or diaphragm pumps), high vacuum pumps are capable of reducing the number of gas molecules
in a chamber to very low levels.

Types of High Vacuum Pumps


DIFFUSION PUMPS:

Working Principle: Use vaporized oil or mercury jets to capture gas molecules and direct them
towards an exhaust.

Applications: Commonly used in research labs and industrial processes requiring high and ultra-
high vacuum.

Ultimate Pressure: Can reach pressures as low as 10⁻⁶ Torr.

Advantages: No moving parts, making them reliable for long-term use.

TURBOMOLECULAR PUMPS:

molecules, forcing them downwards into a lower-pressure region.

Applications: Widely used in ultra-high vacuum systems such as particle accelerators and
electron microscopes.

Ultimate Pressure: Can achieve pressures as low as 10⁻⁹ Torr.

Advantages: Oil-free, fast pumping speed, and high efficiency for light gases like hydrogen and

CRYOGENIC PUMPS:

3.1 DIFFUSION PUMPS
Diffusion pumps are a type of high vacuum pump used to achieve very low pressures,
typically in the range of 10⁻³ to 10⁻⁶ Torr, and, in certain configurations, even lower. They are
widely used in industrial and research applications, such as semiconductor fabrication,
vacuum coating, and space simulation, due to their ability to handle large gas loads and
produce high vacuum efficiently.

Working Principle of Diffusion Pumps

1. Heating Oil Vapor: A diffusion pump works by heating a special diffusion oil to its
boiling point, causing it to vaporize.
2. Jet Formation: The vapor rises through a series of nozzles inside the pump. These
nozzles direct the vapor downward in high-speed jets towards the pump walls.
3. Gas Molecule Capture: As gas molecules from the vacuum chamber collide with the
descending vapor jets, they are directed towards the pump's lower region. Here, they are
compressed and forced out by a backing pump, typically a rotary vane pump.
4. Condensation of Oil Vapor: The vaporized oil eventually condenses on the cooled walls
of the pump and is recirculated back to the boiler, allowing the process to continue.

other high-vacuum pumps like turbomolecular pumps or cryogenic pumps.

3.2 HIGH VACUUM PUMP: SORPTION PUMP

The sorption pump is a specialized high vacuum pump designed to achieve vacuum pressures
down to approximately 10⁻⁵ Torr without using mechanical or oil-based components. It is
widely used in clean vacuum systems where contamination from oil or other moving parts is
unacceptable. The pump operates on the principle of adsorption, where gas molecules are
trapped on the surface of a solid material, usually activated charcoal or zeolite, which has been
cooled to cryogenic temperatures.
