Is Artificial Intelligence Good for Society?

Pros:

Artificial Intelligence Eliminates Human Risk and Error

Everyone makes mistakes on occasion. That’s not always a bad thing, but when it comes to producing
consistent results, it certainly can be. Using AI to complete tasks, particularly repetitive ones, can prevent
human error from tainting an otherwise perfectly useful product or service. Similarly, using AI to complete
particularly difficult or dangerous tasks can help prevent the risk of injury or harm to humans. An example
of AI taking risks in place of humans would be robots being used in areas with high radiation. Humans can
get seriously sick or die from radiation, but the robots would be unaffected. And if a fatal error were to
occur, the robot could be built again. For example, CERN has developed robots like CERNBot and the
Train Inspection Monorail (TIM), which can operate in environments with high levels of ionizing radiation.
These robots can carry out high-precision operations and inspections autonomously, reducing the risk of
radiation exposure to humans.(Mills, 2019)

Artificial Intelligence is Always Available

AIprograms are available at all times, whereas humans work 8 hours a day. Machines can work all
through the day and night, and AI-powered chatbots can provide customer service even during off-hours.
This can help companies to produce more and provide a better customer experience than humans could
provide alone.Artificial intelligence has improved customer service by providing 24/7 support. AI-powered
customer service tools can increase efficiency, reduce operational costs, and provide fast and personalized
support at scale. The report highlights that AI chatbots can handle customer queries 24/7, ensuring that
companies can offer round-the-clock support and improve the overall customer experience.(Wren,2024)

AI reduces Repetitive Jobs

Even the most interesting job in the world has its share of mundane or repetitive work. This could be
things like entering and analyzing data, generating reports, verifying information, and the like. Using an AI
program can save humans from the boredom of repetitive tasks, and save their energy for work that requires
more creative energy. Artificial intelligence programs can alleviate the monotony of repetitive tasks, such as
data entry, report generation, and information verification. By automating these activities, AI allows
employees to focus on more creative tasks that require critical thinking and innovation. Automation and AI
are expected to increase productivity by up to 1.4% annually. The report highlights that by automating
routine tasks, companies can free up employees to focus on more complex and creative work, leading to
higher job satisfaction and innovation.(Manyika & Sneader, 2018)
Data Acquisition and Analysis
When it comes to processing data, the scale of data generated far exceeds the human capacity to understand
and analyze it. AI algorithms can help process higher volumes of complex data, making it usable for analysis. AI
algorithms can analyze real-time data from millions of sources, identifying patterns, trends, and insights that
inform business decisions. AI algorithms can process and analyze data at a scale that is beyond human capacity.
Report states that AI can analyze real-time data from millions of sources, identifying patterns, trends, and
insights that inform business decisions. (Davenport & Redman, 2022)
Artificial Intelligence can Improve Healthcare:
AI is helping improve healthcare in the Philippines, especially in areas that don’t have enough doctors. For
example, AI-powered tools help doctors diagnose diseases faster and more accurately. AI is significantly
enhancing healthcare in the Philippines by improving patient care and aiding healthcare workers1. AI-powered
tools help doctors diagnose diseases faster and more accurately, especially in areas with limited medical
resources. (Ogerio,2024))
Artificial Intelligence Will Boost the Economy
AI is expected to help the economy grow by creating new jobs, especially in technology-related fields like
data science and AI development. While some jobs might be replaced by AI, new jobs will come in other areas.
According to Édes(2024) the AI has transformed the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) sector in the
Philippines, making operations more efficient and creating new opportunities.AI has significant role in
enhancing productivity and the potential for job creation in other sectors as a result of this technological shift.
Better Public Services
AI is also being used to improve public services. The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA)
plans to implement intelligent transport systems (ITS) over the next three years to address traffic congestion in
Metro Manila. The ITS will connect cities and agencies to provide more efficient traffic management, aiming to
reduce congestion and improve traffic flow (Galvez, 2019).
AI has Better Effect in Education
The advantages of AI in education in the Philippines is its ability to provide personalized learning experiences.
AI-driven platforms, such as adaptive learning systems, analyze students' learning behaviors and tailor the
curriculum to meet individual needs, improving student outcomes. AI has the potential to revolutionize
education by customizing content and experiences to meet individual student need. AI can support educators in
making real-time decisions to improve student outcomes and create new opportunities for collaboration and
social interaction. (Llego, 2024). Moreover, AI has played a significant role in automating administrative tasks in
education, allowing teachers to focus more on instruction. AI-powered systems help with grading, attendance
monitoring, and content creation, reducing the workload on educators. AI is assisting teachers in the Philippines
by automating administrative tasks such as grading, scheduling, and attendance monitoring. This automation
allows educators to focus more on student interaction and curriculum development, enhancing the overall
teaching experience. (Tinio, 2024)
AI has a big contributions in Agriculture
In the Philippines, the adoption of AI in agriculture has shown potential to improve farm productivity, particularly in
rice and corn production. AI-powered tools such as drones, remote sensors, and AI algorithms for precision farming
help farmers make data-driven decisions about crop management, pest control, and irrigation. It is said that Their
sensors can detect soil degradation and help increase food production by 600 percent per year. By helping farmers
improve soil quality and crop production, we can secure food for future generations.( "FARMTRI: Cultivating AI for
sustainable agriculture solutions"). Another advantage is the use of AI in weather forecasting, which is crucial in a
country vulnerable to typhoons and erratic weather patterns. AI helps predict weather changes more accurately,
enabling farmers to plan and mitigate risks. THE Agro-Climatic Advisory Portal (ACAP), designed by the Department
of Agriculture Regional Field Office 1 (DA-RFO1) Adaptation and Mitigation Initiative in Agriculture (AMIA)
Program, will guide farmers on how to avoid, recover from, and adapt to climate change effects and unpredictable
weather conditions. ACAP's features include the 10-day farm weather outlook and advisory that uses the Pagasa's
weather forecasts; tropical cyclone information and bulletin; droughts and rainfall forecasts; calendars that show crop
activity from preparation stage to maturity; and seasonal recommendations in the six-month period like climate risks
and impact outlooks. stage to maturity; and seasonal recommendations in the six-month period like climate risks and
impact outlooks. (Domingo,2024)
Cons:
Degradation
Over time, machines wear out. For instance, if AI is used in an assembly line machine, the parts will eventually wear
down. Without a self-repair function, the machine will eventually break. Similarly, the AI itself can become outdated if
it's not regularly updated and evaluated by human experts. The data and models used to create the AI will age, making
the AI less effective unless it's retrained or programmed to keep learning and improving. It is found that 91% of
machine learning models get worse over time. This happens because the models encounter new data that they weren't
trained on, which affects their performance. To keep these models working well, they need regular updates and
maintenance (Viquez,2024)

Challenges of Using AI in Agriculture in the Philippines

In the Philippines, just like in other parts of the world, the high cost of AI technology in farming is a big hurdle. Many
farmers, especially the smaller ones, find it hard to afford expensive AI tools like drones, sensors, and advanced
software. These technologies can be very helpful, but their high price makes it difficult for many farmers to use them.
This is a significant issue because AI can really help improve farming efficiency and productivity, but the upfront costs
are too high for most smallholders to manage. This limits their access to the productivity benefits AI can offer.
Research states a new farming tech in the Philippines. It says only 30% of small farmers use digital tools like drones and
sensors. The high cost makes it hard for them to afford these AI technologies, which could help improve their farming.
(Taer & Taer, 2024). Moreover, internet connectivity in rural areas of the Philippines, where most of the agricultural
activities take place, remains poor. This digital gap makes AI tools less effective because they need good internet to
work. Many farmers also don't have the training or technical skills needed to use AI, which stops them from getting the
full benefits ("Transforming Philippine Agri-Food Systems with Digital Technology: Extent, Prospects, and
Inclusiveness")
Costly Implementation:
The biggest and most obvious drawback of implementing AI is that its development can be extremely costly. Depending on
what exactly you need AI to do, the cost changes. Simple AI models can start around $5,000, while more complex models
using deep learning can range from $50,000 to over $500,000. For specific applications, healthcare AI systems can cost
between $20,000 to $50,000, and fintech AI systems may range from $50,000 to $150,000 due to their complexity and
regulatory requirements. The article emphasizes that while the initial costs can be high, the long-term benefits of AI
implementation can lead to significant cost savings and efficiency improvements. (Reilly, 2024)
Challenges of Using AI in Philippine Education
Using AI in education in the Philippines faces several challenges. One major issue is that students might misuse AI tools,
leading to over-reliance and laziness, completing assignments without understanding the material. Additionally, many areas
have poor internet connectivity, making AI tools hard to use effectively. Students and educators in the Philippines have
expressed concerns about the misuse of AI tools, leading to over-reliance and laziness in completing assignments without fully
understanding the material.(Barreiro,2023)
