2. LEARNING OUTCOMES
Learning Outcomes
This course is an introduction to the field of adult psychopathology. It focuses on theoretical
models of abnormal behavior as they relate to the definition, etiology, and treatment of
mental disorders. Diagnostic classification, behavioral and biological features of severe
psychological disorders, and current etiological models are emphasized. Special reference is
made to the therapeutic approaches to the treatment of mental disorders, and issues
regarding the usefulness, limitations and consequences of the diagnosis as an institutional
practice are discussed. Furthermore, clinical material focusing on case formulation as a tool
for better understanding of psychopathology is given.
On completion of the course, students should be able to demonstrate:
familiarity with the major concepts, theoretical perspectives, empirical findings, and
historical trends in psychopathology,
a critical appraisal of major classificatory systems,
a critical appraisal of predominant models of etiology and psychopathology and accurate
and clear documentation of assessment,
knowledge and theoretical understanding of effective, evaluated psychological
interventions for mental disorders,
familiarity with the concept of “empathy”.
