OBSERVE
Learners’ Development Matrix
Record the date you gathered about the learners’ characteristics and need in this
matrix. This will allow you to compare the characteristics and needs of learners at different
levels. The items under each domain are by no means exhaustive. These are just sample
indicators. You may add other aspects which you may have observed.
Development Preschooler Elementary High School
Domain Indicate age range of Indicate age range of Indicate age range of
children observed: children observed: children observed:
Physical Preschooler need Elementary students Highschoolers gross
Gross-motor skills help from others walk, run and move motors skill are
properly already fine
Fine-motor skills They mostly like to
play and draw They like to write Their fine-motor skill
Self-help skills and read at this stage is also being

Interactions with They always ready to
Classmates/friends talk and play with They like to talk At this stage they will
their classmates much with their gather a lot of friends

not yet critical become more higher
Others They solve problems
They solve problem in the best of their They also solve

ANALYZE
Write the most salient developmental characteristics of the learners you observed. Based
on these characteristics, think of implications for the teacher.
Example:
Level Salient Characteristics Implications to the Teaching-
Observed Learning Process
Preschool Preschooler like to moves Therefore, the teachers should
Age range for around a lot remember to use music and
learners observed 3-4 movement activities not just in
PE but in all other subjects.
Therefore, teachers should not
expect preschoolers to stay
seated for a long period of time.
Level Salient Characteristics Implications to the Teaching-
Observed Learning Process
Preschool They imitate or copy Therefore, the teacher must show good
Age range for adult’s action acts to preschooler
learners observed 3-5 Therefore, the teacher must correct if a
child copied a wrong action and explain
what’s wrong they have shown
Elementary They are more interactive Therefore, the teacher should
Age range for in playing outdoor games incorporate rate performance-based
learners observed 7- activities in every lesson
13
High School Mood shifts occur in almost Therefore, teachers must be in dealing
Age range for every situation high schoolers as they are now in early
learners observed 14- adolescent period which is a critical
16 stage. Understanding is needed.
REFLECT
1. While you were observing the learners, did you recall your own experiences when you
were their age? What similarities or differences do you have with the learners you
observed?
When I was observing them, I remember much memories when I was in their age.
I always want to play and enjoy staying in school. There are still times that I got into
trouble because I want to fight with my classmates and the teacher fix the argument.
Then when I was in high school level, I tried my best to mingle with my classmates as
good as I can. Also, I want to solve things independently and think logically just what the
students did in the class when I’ve observed.
2. Think of a teacher you cannot forget for positive or negative reasons. How did she/he
help or not help you with your needs (physical, emotional, social, and cognitive)? How
did it affect you?
I have my high school teacher who had much positive impact to me that help me
with my needs. Inside the team, he taught me things that improves me how my thinking
skills must be sued. And he also told me that it is just all about the mental aspects but in
studying it plays an important factor in my physical. That’s why this affect me the way
how I study and how I improve every single day.
3. Share you other insights here:
I must say that the process of learning always has its step. Students learn in
different and various times. The guidance of the teachers is really a need to the
improvement and development of the students’ skills and learnings. Students started
without enough knowledge but ended up with so much as they exit the school premises.
LINK Theory to Practice
Directions: Read the items given below and encircle the correct answer.
1. A 14-year old felt ignored by her crush whom she believes is her one true love.
She is crying incessantly and refuses to listen and accept sound advice that the
teacher is offering. Her refusal to accept is because______________________.
A. she thinks what she feels is too special and unique, that no one has felt like
this before.*
B. the teenager’s favorite word is “no,” and she will simply reject everything the
teachers says.
C. 14-years old are not yet capable of perspective taking and cannot take the
teacher’s perspective
D. teenagers never listen to adult advice.
2. A preschool teacher is thinking about how best to develop the fine motor skills
of the 4-year-olds. Which of the following should he best consider?
A. Provide daily coloring book activities.
B. Ask the children to do repeated writing drills everyday.
C. Encourage children to eat independently.
D. Conduct a variety of fun and challenging activities involving hand muscles
daily.*
3. Science Teacher Rita showed her class a glass of water with an egg in it. She
asked the class: “What happens to the egg if I add three-tablespoon salt to the
glass of water?” This is hypothesis formulation. What can you infer about the
cognitive developmental stage of Teacher Rita’s class?
A. Formal operational stage*
B. Concrete operational stage*
C. Pre-operational stage
D. Between concrete and formal operational stage
SHOW Your Learning Artifacts
Which is your favorite theory of development? How can this guide you as a future
teacher? Clip some readings about this theory and paste them here.
Erickson Psychological Development Theory
As a future teacher, knowing some of the theories of development may help me to
guide to become effective mentor. As I enter in this field I should know and be familiar
on how students develop and things that affect growth. Just like Erickson theory of
psychological development it has stage of growing.
Erickon’s theory of psychological development shared some similarities with
Frued’s, it is dramatically in many ways, rather than focusing on sexual interest as a
driving force in development, Erickson believed that social interaction and experience
played decisive role. This is one of the opposition that the environment plays a crucial
role in self-awareness, adjustment, human development and identity.
Having the knowledge about how students react to a certain situation may help
me find things to provide suitable needs. Also, knowing their strength and weaknesses
may help me provide what things that may complete the missing piece. Giving them
enough social interaction and experience lead them to make their own decisions that
support their self-awareness, adjustment, human development and identity.

Early adolescents, or those between the ages of 11 and 14, go through major changes in their social,
emotional, and cognitive development, which has a big impact on their school experiences. This
developmental stage is known for its own set of learning needs, interests, and characteristics.
