- University/Department/ Specialization Requirement Specialization Requirement
To provide the students the fundamental knowledge on structure/properties of engineering materials and selection for engineering applications.
6 Course Outline 1. Understanding the nature, composition and application of various engineering materials such as metals, polymers, ceramics, composites, etc. 2. Properties of materials (physical, mechanical, chemical and electrical). 3. structure of materials, 4. Characterization of materials and
testing.
Course Learning Objectives The course learning objectives are to enable the students:
2.Understand the basic properties & structure of materials and conduct tests to determine various properties
3.Understand the selection of materials, selection procedure including design specifications, criteria for selection.
7 (Describe the way in which the units/modules/courses map to the aims
of the qualification.)
4.Understand the relations between the composition, temperature and phase fractions applied to equilibrium phase diagrams for given material systems.
Course Learning Outcomes (CLO) Upon completion of the course the student will be able to:
1. Understand the classification and applications of various engineering materials such as metals, polymers, ceramics, composites, semi-conductors, etc.
2. Study the material properties such as mechanical, electrical, thermal, physical and chemical properties.
3. Understand and differentiate various atomic structures and their effect on material properties.
5. Select a suitable material for any given product based on the design specifications and selection criteria using standard data sources.
6. Perform destructive and non-destructive tests in laboratory to characterize materials and examine microscopic structures of engineering materials.
