1. Problem: Day to day congestion of vehicles in Cotabato City.

Title: Exploring the effect of Traffic Signaling System in Cotabato City: A Descriptive
Study

Background of the Study

The historical and socio-economic backgrounds of cities vary from country to country. Concerns
about transportation are shared by city dwellers, government workers, and students alike. Highly populated
cities and municipalities are confronted with serious transport problems. This is the result of inevitable
growth of different transport modes that invite more projects that would ease the congestion of vehicles and
pedestrians, to ensure safety among drivers and pedestrians, and reduce or eradicate the occurrence of
accidents especially along highways and unsignalized intersections.
National highways are regarded as essential routes for accessing various local government units
(LGU’s) in the Philippines since they offer the structure for arterial networks, street vendors and collectors.
Along these national roads are intersections.
Traffic signals are probably the most easily recognized traffic control devices. In some busy
intersections in a large city, a traffic signal may control the movement of more than 100,000 vehicles per
day. It indicates to moving cars and people when to halt, move forward cautiously, or move forward at all.
The traffic signal decreases delay and effectively reduces congestion.

Statement of the Problem

In general, this study would ascertain the effect of traffic lights at various intersections throughout
Cotabato City's national routes. This study will also answer the following specific questions:
1. Does the traffic signal system addresses the everyday vehicle congestion in the city?
2. Does the LGU Cotabato currently have any policies to reduce traffic congestion before traffic lights are
installed?
3. Is there a need for additional traffic lights in some intersection experiencing vehicle congestion?
