The Euro (EUR) Currency
In 1992 a treaty between several European countries was signed, agreeing to
form a single market which would simplify trading between participating
member countries.
Eleven European Union countries came together to create the Euro zone,
agreeing to establish one common currency: the Euro (EUR). Its purpose is to
facilitate the ease of business transactions within and beyond member
countries. With the Euro as a single currency, travellers can compare prices of
goods sold in different EU countries that use it. Travel between euro countries
simplifies travel because there is no need to change money from the currency
of one EU country using the Euro to that of another.
The Euro is the currency used 16 EU countries today. The EU countries of
Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland,
Romania, Sweden and the United Kingdom are member of the European Union
but have not adopted the Euro and continue to use their own national
currencies. Andorra Monaco, San Marino and the Vatican are not EU member
countries, yet these countries have adopted the Euro as their official currency.
