A Special School
A report by Eddie Roads
Kiran is a 13-year-old student from Pakistan. Her school isn’t a
regular school. It’s on an old school bus. There are 160 students at
her school. Kiran isn’t at school every day. She has got school four
days a week, for only two hours a day.
On the school bus there are some chairs, some desks and an old
blackboard. There is a computer, too. There aren’t different
classrooms. Students of all ages are together. There also isn’t a
cafeteria, but there is a meal for the students.

At school, Kiran has got reading and writing lessons. There aren’t
any science, geography, history or English lessons. That’s why she
hasn’t got lots of textbooks and notebooks.
Kiran’s school isn’t big or “smart”, but Kiran is happy at her school.
She has got great friends and excellent teachers.

Common questions

In China, there are five different types of school uniforms, which include versions for ordinary days and formal occasions, and they vary for summer and winter . In contrast, school uniforms are not usually present in the Netherlands, highlighting a disparity in the adoption of uniforms between the two countries .

Japanese schools emphasize cleanliness and uniformity, as illustrated by the organized shoe storage system and the use of inside shoes to maintain a neat environment . In contrast, the Pakistani school on the bus lacks traditional buildings and amenities, indicating a focus on accessibility and essential education over infrastructure, reflecting cultural prioritization of resource utilization .

The organized arrangement of shoes in the getabako (shoe storage) emphasizes discipline and order from the moment students enter the school. This practice likely contributes to a broader culture of tidiness and respect for shared spaces, reinforcing discipline and mutual respect within the classroom environment .

Despite the limitations of space and resources, Kiran's bus-school accommodates her needs by offering essential facilities like chairs, desks, and a computer, which are crucial for learning fundamentals of reading and writing . The presence of a meal compensates for the absence of a cafeteria, addressing nutritional needs during school hours .

The benefits of having both formal and ordinary uniforms in China include fostering a sense of discipline and unity through attire and accommodating various occasions and seasons with specific designs like summer and winter wear. However, drawbacks could involve the economic burden of purchasing multiple uniforms, and the rigidity of formal wear may not suit all students’ comfort preferences .

Japanese students leave their outside shoes near the door and wear inside shoes, which helps maintain cleanliness in the classroom . This practice also ensures all students are on the same level in terms of footwear, promoting uniformity and contributing to a quiet and orderly classroom environment .

Having school on a bus affects Kiran's education by limiting the number of subjects taught to reading and writing, with no provision for science, geography, or history lessons . This setup influences her routine as school only operates for two hours a day, four days a week, indicating reduced instructional time compared to typical schools .

Kiran's school is unique because it operates on an old school bus instead of a traditional building. This unconventional setup means there are no different classrooms, only chairs, desks, and an old blackboard for teaching .

The limited use of textbooks and notebooks implies a focus on practical learning and essential literacy skills over a broad subject range. This suggests the school prioritizes foundational education in reading and writing, possibly due to resource constraints or an emphasis on basic education for all students on the bus .

The main challenges likely to arise include limited subject offerings confined to reading and writing, lack of specialized classrooms or labs for science and geography, and potential distractions from being in a non-conventional setting like a moving or stationary bus. This could hinder a broad-based educational experience and impact Kiran's holistic development .
