Force Systems
Tutorial Objective:
• Understand how to resolve forces into their components in both 2D and 3D force systems.
• Apply vector addition techniques to determine the resultant force in a 2D or 3D system.
• Demonstrate proficiency in using geometry and trigonometry to calculate force magnitudes and directions
in complex systems.
Question1
The y-component of the force F which a person exerts on the handle of the box wrench is known to be
70 lb. Determine the x-component and the magnitude of F.
Question 2
Determine the components Fa and Fb of the 4-kN force along the oblique axes a and b.

Question 3
Three forces act at point O. If it is known that the y-component of the resultant R is −5 kN and that the
z-component is 6 kN, determine F3, θ, and R.
Question 4
A 300-lb vertical force is required to pull the pipe out of the ground. Determine the magnitude and
direction angles of the force F2 which, when applied together with the 150-lb force F shown, will
produce a 300-lb vertical resultant.

Question 5
The man shown in the figure pulls on the cord with a force of 70 lb. Representing this force acting on the
support A as a Cartesian vector and determine its direction
Question 6
Express the forces F1, F2 in vector form. Determine the vector expression for the resultant R of two
forces. Find the magnitude and coordinate direction angles of resultant R with x, y and z axis.
