UIDAI: India's Identity Revolution

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) was established in 2009 to issue unique identification numbers to all Indian residents. The UIDAI will collect basic identifying information for each individual, but will not store transaction records or share detailed personal information in order to protect privacy. The goal is to issue 600 million identification numbers within the first 4 years and provide identification for 1.2 billion citizens, which will help improve delivery of social services and financial inclusion. Nandan Nilekani is the Chairman of the UIDAI.

UNIQUE IDENTIFICATION AUTHORITY OF

INTRODUCTION

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) was established in February 2009, attached to the Planning Commission. UIDAI created as a statutory body under a separate legislation to fulfill its objectives. The law will also stipulate rules, regulations , processes and protocols to be followed by different agencies partnering with the Authority
