THE VARIOUS TOURIST DESTINATIONS OF JAMMU DISTRICT ARE-
01. NANDINI WILDLIFE SANCTUARY:-
Nandini Wildlife Sanctuary is located just 28 kms from
Jammu and is virtually a paradise for lovers of nature and
wildlife. The Nandini Wildlife Sanctuary named after a
nearby village got established in 1990. This wildlife
sanctuary was attempted at preserving the thick forest
cover of Jammu's adjoining areas.

02. BAHU FORT-CONSTRUCTED:-


The fort was originally built by Raja Bahulochan and later
amended by the Dogra kings. The original structure is more
than 3000 year old. Pilgrims flock the temple on Tuesdays
and Sundays, regarded auspicious. The fort, along with the
Bahu temple, commands a panoramic view of the Jammu
city.

03. MUBARAKH MANDI PALACE-
Foundation led by raja dhruv dev in 1710 is a house of dogra
art museum situated in the pink hall of palace it was a seat of
power for dogra kingdom until maharaja hari singh shifted the
seat to hari niwas palace in 1925.

04. AMAR MAHAL:-


The Amar Mahal Palace is a palace in Jammu, in the Indian
erstwhile Kingdom of Jammu and Kashmir, India. The palace
has now been converted into a museum. Commissioned by
Maharaja Amar Singh, a Dogra king, the palace was built in the
nineteenth century by a French architect on the lines of a
French Chateau. The palace was donated to the Hari-Tara
Charitable Trust by Karan Singh for use as a museum.[1] It has
many exhibits including a golden throne weighing 120kg .

05. RAGHUNATH TEMPLE:-


Raghunath temple is a hindu temple located in jammu in the
indian union territory of jammu and kashmir. It consists of a complex of
seven hindu shrines. Raghunath temple was constructed by the first
dogra ruler maharaja gulab singh in the year 1835 and later his
son maharaja ranbir singh got it completed in the year 1860 during
dogra rule.[1] the temple has many gods in its complex of shrines, but the
presiding deity is rama – also known as raghunath, an avatar of vishnu.

06. BAGH-E-BAHU:-
The Bahu Fort is a historic fort in the city of Jammu,
Maharaja of Parmar Rajputs constructed the ancient fort on the banks
on Tawi River, is believed to have been repaired by Bahu Lochan - brother of
the traditional founder of Jammu, Jambu Lochan. It is believed that the first
renovation of this fort was undertaken during Dogra Rule in 18th century.
The fort is a religious place, and within its precincts has a temple dedicated
to the Hindu goddess Kali. The temple is known locally as the "Bawe Wali
Mata temple".

07. MANSAR AND SURINSAR LAKE :-


Mansar Lake is a lake located 62 km (39 mi) from the city
of Jammu in Jammu and Kashmir, India. It is fringed by forest-covered hills,
and is over a mile (1.6 km) in length and half-a-mile (0.80 km) in width.
Surinsar-Mansar Lakes are designated as Ramsar Convention sites in
November 2005.
Surinsar Lake is one of the twin lakes in Jammu, the other being Mansar
Lake located around 30 km away from here. The perimeter of this lake is
surrounded by thick mangroves, looming pine trees and beautiful hills.

08. PEER KHO CAVE:-
On Circular Road above the banks of river Tawi is another shrine of Lord
Shiva where he is worshipped in the form of a Swayambhu Linga.
There is also a cave adjacent to the shrine known as Jambavanta cave.
Being an easily accessible destination, the Peer Kho Cave Temple can be
reached from central Jammu by covering a distance of mere 3.5
kilometres.

09. RANBIRESHWAR TEMPLE:-


The biggest Shiva temple in north India, Ranbireshwar Temple is one of the
prime attractions in the picturesque Jammu city. It is a very ancient shrine,
located in Shalimar Road near the New Secretariat. Maharaja Ranbir Singh
built it in 1883, dedicated to Lord Shiva.
The temple has a central `lingam` measuring 8-feet in height, constructed
out of black stone, is the biggest in India. It was under the built of the
Dogra rulers; also enshrining 12 shivlings in crystal, measuring 15cm to
38cm. Galleries with 1.25 lakh `bona lingam` brought from Narmada River,
can be witnessed on stone slabs inside the temple. There are also
mammoth images of Ganesha, Kartikeya and Nandi Bull.

02. MAHARAJA RANBIR SINGH(1830-1885):-

amended in 1860
Was rewarded MOST EXALTED ORDER OF THE STAR OF INDIA in 1862 and his gun

During his reign, the Trans-Himalayan territories of Gilgit, Astore, Hunza-Nagar were
annexed and became a part of Jammu and Kashmir.
 Ranbir Singh was a scholar of Sanskrit and Persian languages and had many books
translated..
Built Raghunath Temple, Pathshalas, Ranbireshvaram Temple and setup Dharmath
trust to look after the Temples.

DOGRA RULE OF JAMMU
04. MAHARAJA HARI SINGH(23 SEPTEMBER 1895 – 26 APRIL 1961) :-
Was commander-in-chief of state forces by Maharaja Pratap Singh in 1915 & Became
Maharaja on 1925 .
Gilgit Agency leased to Britishers for 60 years
 Hari Singh who was greatly influenced by western liberal ideas. introduced a series of
reforms in social economic and administrative set-up
Maharaja Hari Singh issued a number of orders to bring about social equality in the
society.
He announced that all public, wells. tanks temples and schools shall be open to all
irrespective of the status of a person.
The Maharaja was 1st ruler of the state to take such a bold step.
He also reserved seats for depressed classes in govt jobs. Seats were also reserved in
local bodies and later in the PrajaSabha
The Maharaja passed the "infant marriage prevention legislation" which prohibited
marriage of boys and girls under the age of 18 and 14 years respectively.
The Maharaja also encouraged widow remarriage and in 1934 passed "suppression of
immoral traffic in women regulation"

DOGRA RULE OF JAMMU
In 1934 a Legislative Assembly called Praja Sabah was established which consisted of 75
members. 33 of whom were elected but on a limited franchise basis.
The number of elected members as later on increased to 40 in 1939,
Hari Singh enacted the J&K High Court Constitution in 1928AD which provided
High court with one Chief justice and two other judges.
Hari Singh which provided State Subject Status to the Mulkis i.e. residents of the state.
1927 introduced State Subject & 1929 constituted a High Court .
Opened temples and other public places for Harijans also.
Introduced Panchayat Raj and Gram Sudhar movement in state.
In 1930 attended First Round Table Conferrence in London.
