LABEX 1:

QGIS ACTIVITY #1
FERNANDEZ, Alfonzo Jose V.

LBYCV3G - EW1
I. DATA PREPARATION
Requirements:
Shapefile of the administrative
borders of the Philippines
Topographic map of: ???
Hazard map: ???

Vector administrative maps of the

country at various levels (e.g.
barangay, municipality, province, &
region) are available as shapefiles,
which are downloadable at

I. DATA PREPARATION
Requirements:
Shapefile of the administrative
borders of the Philippines
Topographic map of: Cavite
Hazard map: Liquefaction

The Province of Cavite was chosen for

this activity. Its topographic map,
along with its Liquefaction hazard risk
map (as of 2005) were downloaded
through:

II. PROJECT SETUP
The shapefile ‘gadmn41_PHL_2.shp’ was

III. GEOREFERENCING (TOPOGRAPHY)

The GCP of the topographic map was added as shown above.

III. GEOREFERENCING
(TOPOGRAPHY)

A total of 16 GCPs were drawn on the

map, with as little overall residuals as
possible. The mean error is shown
below:
III. GEOREFERENCING (TOPOGRAPHY)
III. GEOREFERENCING (HAZARD)
The Liquefaction Hazard
Map, another raster map,
was georeferenced. This
time, the GCPs were added
from map to the canvas.

A total of eleven GCPs were

added, all of which were
spread across the map in
order to achieve a fair
projection.
III. GEOREFERENCING
IV. DIGITIZING TOPOGRAPHY
Additions:
Elevation points
Roads
City blocks

The first new shapefile to add

was ‘Cavite_ElevPoint,’ which
denotes the height of a certain
location within the province.

Its geometry type is a point.

IV. DIGITIZING TOPOGRAPHY

Using the ‘add point

feature,’ a total of
eleven elevation points
were drawn.
IV. DIGITIZING TOPOGRAPHY
Each shapefile point was
given a distinct symbol for
better visualization.

The points were then

given a text label to mark
their heights in meters.
IV. DIGITIZING TOPOGRAPHY

Additions:
Elevation points
Roads
City blocks
IV. DIGITIZING TOPOGRAPHY

The next shapefile to add was

‘Cavite_Road,’ which depicts
certain roadways throughout
the province.

Its geometry type is a

linestring.
IV. DIGITIZING TOPOGRAPHY
Using the ‘add line
feature,’ a total of
twelve roads were
traced.

The field calculator

was utilized to convert
the length of each road
from meters to
kilometers.
IV. DIGITIZING TOPOGRAPHY
Each shapefile line demarcated
with a thick yellow line to
depict the drawn up roads on
the map.

The roads were then

marked with a name,
many of which were taken
from Google Maps.
IV. DIGITIZING TOPOGRAPHY

Additions:
Elevation points
Roads
City blocks
IV. DIGITIZING TOPOGRAPHY
The last shapefile to add was
‘Cavite_CityBlock,’ which
represents major city blocks
throughout various parts of
the province, each separated
by major roads, and each with
a specific function.

Its geometry type is a polygon.

IV. DIGITIZING TOPOGRAPHY
A total of 32 polygons were drawn. Four The area was converted from square
classes were chosen: residential, meters to hectares. And the perimeter
commercial, industrial, and agricultural was set-up using the field calculator.
IV. DIGITIZING TOPOGRAPHY
Each polygon is colored
differently, according to the city
block’s primary usage.
IV. DIGITIZING TOPOGRAPHY

Additions:
Elevation points
Roads
City blocks
V. DIGITIZING LIQUEFACTION MAP
Additions:
Areas of
liquefaction risk
Settlements

The final portion of the

activity was delegated to
digitizing portions of the
liquefaction map, such that
settlements in Cavite that
are under risk are
highlighted.
V. DIGITIZING LIQUEFACTION MAP
Additions:
Areas of
liquefaction risk
Settlements

Each area of risk were

marked with distinct colors.

Red depicts high risk,

orange depicts moderate,
and yellow draws areas of
low risk.
V. DIGITIZING LIQUEFACTION MAP
The second shapefiles to
add are points marking
each settlements at risk.

A total of fourteen
settlements were marked.
V. DIGITIZING LIQUEFACTION MAP
Additions:
Areas of
liquefaction risk
Settlements

Each point was then

given a clear marking.
VI. FINAL OUTPUT
