SUBJECT: Replacement of the Q3 pulse gas manifold to the new
“threaded orifice” version
Date May 23, 2011

Part Number Part Description Status
5012597 Q3 pulse gas manifold New Release (Available)
Overview
The Q3 pulse gas manifold equipped on a QTRAP 5500® system may fail during Trap mode causing the
instrument to vent. A new version of the Q3 pulse gas manifold (P/N 5012597) has been released. Older
versions of the Q3 pulse gas manifold are to be replaced with the new version. QTRAP 5500®
instruments with serial numbers AU2523xxxx and lower will be required to be upgraded with the new
version. This replacement program is for QTRAP 5500® instruments under service warranty or service
contract and will be implemented on the next service visit via an opened ECO service call. There is no
action required for QTRAP 5500® instruments with serial numbers AU2524xxxx and higher.
Problem
The QTRAP 5500® instrument may vent during Trap mode, usually at the higher scan speeds. Quad
mode functions correctly. The venting issue affects only the QTRAP 5500® and not the Triple Quad
5500TM instrument. The venting of the instrument was due to a high pressure in the Q3 pulse gas system,
caused by a vacuum leak with one of the nylon orifice located in the pulse gas manifold. This specific
nylon orifice was failing due to either one of the following reasons;
1. The nylon orifice has dislodged from its original mounted position, or
2. A vacuum leak has occurred between the nylon orifice and the manifold body.

Solution
The Q3 pulse manifold has been redesigned and is equipped with a threaded orifice which includes an O-
ring. This new version replaces several older versions of the Q3 pulse gas manifold (refer to the pictures).
All newly manufactured QTRAP 5500® instruments are equipped with the new version of the Q3 pulse
gas manifold as of March 2011.
The following replacement program is for QTRAP 5500® instruments under service warranty or service
contract and will be implemented on the next service visit via an opened ECO service call:
QTRAP 5500® instruments with serial numbers AU2523xxxx and lower will be required to be upgraded
with the new threaded version of the Q3 pulse gas manifold. These instruments will be equipped with
either one of the following Q3 pulse gas manifolds which will need to be replaced;
1. Version #1 of the Q3 pulse gas manifold (P/N 1030933), or
2. Version #2 of the Q3 pulse gas manifold (P/N 1030933).
Refer to the pictures in this bulletin.
QTRAP 5500® instruments with serial number AU2524xxxx and higher will be equipped with either one
of the following valid Q3 pulse gas manifolds and no further action is required;
1. The new threaded version of the Q3 pulse gas manifold (P/N 5012597), or
2. Version #3 of the Q3 pulse gas manifold (P/N 1030933). Version #3 was introduced as an
interim solution and does not have to be replaced. This version has blue epoxy applied around
the outer circumference of the nylon orifice to stop any possible vacuum leaks.
Refer to the pictures in this bulletin.
The opened ECO calls will be closed after the affected Q3 pulse gas manifold has been replaced.
