TSI SETUP
VERSION 1.2
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
TSI Setup is a utility program for use with TSI’s line of General Purpose and High Performance
OEM mass flowmeters. TSI Setup allows you to modify the user-changeable parameters of
these flowmeters. This program sends and receives the appropriate RS232 commands to the
flowmeter. For a complete explanation of these commands and parameters, see the RS232
Serial Command Set manual (for models with an LCD display), or the TSI Model 4020/4120
Design Guide (for the High Performance OEM models).
TSI Setup only supports user-changeable parameters. Other RS232 commands allow you to
obtain output data of flow rate, temperature, pressure, as well as volume measurements. This
information must be obtained via a communications program such as HyperTerminal or a user-
supplied program such as LabView.
TSI Setup is a very simple program that should work with Windows® 95 / 98 / 2000 / NT.
It requires very little disk space and does not require a fast computer.
Use the HELP function in TSI Setup for additional information.
TSI Setup Operation
1. Turn the flowmeter power OFF.
2. Start the program and select the correct COM PORT for your computer.
3. Turn the flowmeter power ON.
4. Click on READ. The program will interrogate the flowmeter and display its model
number, serial number, last calibration date, and display the appropriate choices for the
user-changeable parameters.
Under some circumstances the RS232 port may become locked. If this happens, turn
the flowmeter power OFF and then ON again.
5. Make the desired changes to the operating parameters. See the information below for
descriptions of these parameters.
6. Click on SEND to send the new information to the flowmeter. These new selections will
be permanently saved in the flowmeter until it is changed.
7. If you attempt to enter an invalid parameter (out-of-range number, unavailable gas
selection, etc.) the flowmeter will return an error message for the invalid parameter after
the SAVE has been executed.
Not all displayed choices are available for all flowmeters. For example, a newer version
of a particular model may have more gas selections than the original version. The
flowmeter itself decides if a parameter is acceptable, so it is impossible to “force” an
invalid parameter.
8. Close the program by clicking on CLOSE.
Parameters & Controls
See RS232 Serial Command Set manual for additional
information about these parameters.
Gas
Selects the gas calibration to be used. Some displayed selections may not be available for your
particular flowmeter.
%O2
(Models 4040/4043/4045 only) Selects the %O2 concentration when an oxygen mixture is being
measured.
Sample Rate (ms)
Sets the sample rate (averaging) for data returned through the serial port and also controls the
update rate of the linearized analog output. Range is 1 - 1,000 ms. Note that this command
does not affect the update rate of the LCD display.
Flow Units
Selects either standard or volumetric units of flow. This affects the LCD display, the analog
output, and the RS232 output. Units are either standard liters per minute or volumetric liters per
minute. The smaller model 4140, 4143, and the OEM 41xx series flowmeters can also be
switched to standard cc per minute or volumetric cc per minute.
Analog Span (L/min)
Sets the full-scale scaling factor of the linearized analog output. Range is 1 to full scale flow.
For example, a 4040 normally has an analog output of 10 V = 300 Std L/min. Setting the analog
span to 100 would change this to 10 V = 100 Std L/min.
Analog Zero (mV)
Sets the zero intercept for the linearized analog output. Range is -100 to + 100 mV. Note that
this sets the zero intercept only and is not a true “zero adjust” because the analog output cannot
go negative.
Display Update Rate (ms)
Sets the update rate for the LCD display. Range is 50 - 5,000 ms. This sets the update rate for
the LCD display only and has no effect on the analog output or the RS232 output.
Display Scroll Mode
(Models 4140 and 4143 only) Selects the measurement parameters that will be shown on the
LCD display. Since the small LCD can only display one parameter at a time, this command
allows the instrument to scroll between flow rate, temperature, or pressure. Available choices
also include continuous display of any one parameter. This command affects only the LCD
display.
Updates
(Models 4140 and 4143 only) Specifies the number of display update cycles that each
parameter will be displayed in the scroll mode. Update cycles are determined by the Display
Update Rate. Range is 1 - 10 display update cycles.
Serial Number
Displays the serial number of the flowmeter.
Model Number
Displays the model number of the flowmeter.
Calibration
Displays the date of the last calibration of the flowmeter.
Close
Exits the program.
Default
Restores all parameters to the original factory default values.
Read
Reads the current values of setup parameters and flowmeter information.
Send
Sends the setup parameters currently on the computer screen to the flowmeter. These
parameters are stored in nonvolatile memory and will remain unless changed again. If you have
entered parameter selection or value that is not valid for your particular meter, an error message
will appear on your computer screen after the SEND function has been completed.
Com Port
Selects the communications port for your computer.
