CLEANING PROCEDURES − SPOP−05
Task 70−21−00−110−048:
1. SPOP 5 − Application Of Corrosion Inhibitors
WARNING: REFER TO THE MANUFACTURER'S MATERIAL SAFETY DATA
SHEETS FOR CONSUMABLE MATERIAL'S INFORMATION SUCH
AS: HAZARDOUS INGREDIENTS, PHYSICAL/CHEMICAL
CHARACTERISTICS, FIRE, EXPLOSION, REACTIVITY, HEALTH
HAZARD DATA, PRECAUTIONS FOR SAFE HANDLING, USE AND
CONTROL MEASURES.
A. General
(1) SPOP−05 is approved for steel alloys on which rust can
occur.
(2) SPOP−05 contains one procedure for long−term protection
with petroleum inhibitors, and two procedures for
short−term (less than seven days) protection with
water−soluble corrosion inhibitor solutions. The
water−soluble corrosion inhibitors reduce process time
because degrease is not necessary.
(a) At the concentrations specified in Section
70−22−00, the applied water−soluble corrosion
inhibitors do not become a sticky or oily layer
that interferes with visual, fluorescent
penetrant, fluorescent magnetic particle, eddy
current, X−ray, or dimensional inspection.
(3) Refer to 70−20−00, General−01 for additional
requirements.
B. Procedure
(1) Method 1: Long−Term Protection
(a) Apply a petroleum−type corrosion inhibitor for
long−term use. Use the applicable procedure:
CAUTION: DO NOT LET PETROLEUM−TYPE CORROSION
INHIBITORS COME IN CONTACT WITH
ANTIGALLANT OR ANTISEIZE COATINGS.
1 Dip in, or spray with one of the corrosion
preventive compounds in the subsequent list,
then drain. For local application of
petroleum−type corrosion inhibitor, use a
brush to apply one the corrosion preventative

(2) Method 2: Short−Term Protection (Less Than Seven
Days), Drain And Blow Dry Procedure
(a) Apply a water−soluble corrosion inhibitor for
short−term use (less than seven days) as follows:
CAUTION: DO NOT USE WATER−SOLUBLE CORROSION
INHIBITOR SOLUTIONS ON ENGINE
BEARINGS.
CAUTION: DO NOT AIR AGITATE THESE SOLUTIONS
WHEN YOU USE THEM.
1 Apply one of the water−soluble corrosion
inhibitor solutions in the subsequent list at
ambient temperature by spray or immersion as
necessary to cover the part.
NOTE: These corrosion inhibitors, when used at
the concentrations specified in Section
70−22−00, do not cause a sticky or oil
material to interfere with visual,
fluorescent penetrant, fluorescent
magnetic particle, eddy current, X−ray,
or dimensional inspections.
NOTE: Each of these corrosion inhibitors
solutions must be in the applicable
specified temperature range if
application of solution is done by
immersion.

SOLUTION
NO. TEMPERATURE RANGE FOR IMMERSION
PS 389 Ambient up to 150° F (65.6° C)
PS 391 Ambient up to 170° F (76.7° C)
SPS 140 Ambient up to 200° F (93.3° C)
SPS 172 Ambient up to 170° F (76.7° C)
SPS 194 Ambient up to 190° F (87.8° C)
2 Let the part drain.
3 Let the part dry in ambient air and then blow
dry the part.
(3) Method 3: Shot−Term Protection (Less Than Seven Days),
Flash Dry Procedure
(a) Apply a water−soluble corrosion inhibitor for
short−term (less than seven days) protection:
1 Put the part fully in one of the water−soluble
corrosion inhibitor solutions in the subsequent
list at the applicable temperature to increase
the temperature of the part to flash dry.
The necessary time in the hot water−soluble
corrosion inhibitor solution will increase as
the number of parts in a basket increases, and
as the size and mass of the parts increase.
SOLUTION
NO. TEMPERATURE RANGE
PS 389 140° − 150° F (60.0° − 65.6° C)
PS 391 140° − 170° F (60.° − 77.° C)
SPS 140 140° − 200° F (60.° − 93.° C)
SPS 172 140° − 170° F (60.° − 77.° C)
SPS 194 140° − 190° F (60.° − 88.° C)
2 Remove the part from the water−soluble
corrosion inhibitor solution. If the part has
cavities and recesses, rotate the part as soon
as possible to flash off the water−soluble
corrosion inhibitor solution. Blow off
remaining water−soluble corrosion inhibitor
solution from these areas.
NOTE: If the water−soluble corrosion inhibitor
solution on the part does not flash
off when the part comes out of the
