[Ephesians 1:3-10 - Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.] B. The Mission of God - Missio Dei C. Christopher J.H. Wright says, "There is one God at work in the universe and in human history, and ... this God has a goal, a purpose, a mission that will ultimately be accomplished by the power of God's Word and for the glory of God's name. This is the mission of the biblical God" D. We are invited to join him. It is about what He has done and is still doing. [Matthew 28:18-20] E. Five things we can discern and well be talking about all of them: 1. What - go make disciples (participle) 2. Who (is to do it) - all disciples 3. Where - all nations 4. When (how long) - until the end of the age 5. How - teaching them to observe all, baptize (participles) F. v18 - ...all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me... G. Indicative, imperative - in the beginning was God=tells Adam and Eve what to do H. He possesses the mission. 1. We dont write a mission statement 2. We dont take credit for movement. I. About a year ago, we observed that many of our people were being driven to missional activity from non-gospel motivation. They were

active because of guilt, shame, performance-driven hearts or based upon their belief that they needed to justify themselves before God or man (the leadership, their peers, the community). This dichotomy between the gospel message and our actual lives ultimately led and leads to burnout, disillusionment with the gospel, and outward moralistic actions, which lack any supernatural power. J. We must remember: We are who we are because of what Jesus has done and is doing--our beings comes out of his doing...our doing proceeds from our being in Christ. K. So when He says baptize them in the name of....this is an establishing of a new Trinitarian identity. Precedes teaching. L. Were not doing what we do because of some Core Values...but rather based on our very identity as image bearers of God. M. In the simplest of terms...this is what it means to be a Missional Church. N. And a Missional church doesnt rst ask the question, What works best? O. Instead, it asks, How do we fulll the mission of Jesus to make disciples who believe and live out the Gospel by displaying and declaring who God is and what He has done in and through Jesus Christ, teaching and training others to do so as well? P. In other words, the goal is to make disciples who make disciples. Q. So we dont have a mission. Jesus does. R. Instead of coming up with our own mission...we are tell the world about His. V. CLOSING A. Why are you here? B. This morning is our chance at a do-over. C. This morning is our chance to start over in the New Year. D. This morning is our chance to crush our agendas, tear up our personal mission statements, and invest your life in what God is has been doing for generations. E. In doing so, jesus promises the lling of the Holy Spirit which provides the power to do all of this.
