WEEK: 3 Subject/s: Science Topic: Understanding Basic Concepts of
Matter
Content Science: The learners demonstrate awareness and develop initiative
Standard on the subject matter. Additionally, students can understand what
matter is, identify its properties, and learn about its existence.
Materials Materials: Paper, crayons, and coloring materials

Learning At the end of the lesson, the learners will be able to:
Objectives:
a. Enumerate the states of Matter
b. Tell the characteristics of each state of matter
c. Describe the changes in the states of matter
d. Visualize the particles of matter in each state
Lesson Proper Prayer
and Activities:
Dear Lord, we come to you in the spirit of learning, humility, and love.
We are grateful for this opportunity to learn from each other and grow
closer in our faith. We ask that you bless our time together as we
explore today’s teachings. Amen.
Motivational Activity
Activity: “Matter Scavenger Hunt”
Hello, everyone! Welcome to our online, to start our lesson, we will do
a quick Matter Scavenger Hunt. I want you to look around your room
and find one item representing each of the three states of matter: a
solid, a liquid, and a gas.
(Allow students a minute to gather their items.)
Once you have your items, come back and hold them up for us to see!
(Encourage students to share their items one by one.)
Great job! This activity helps us think about the different types of
matter in our everyday lives. Let’s learn more about it!
Introduction (The teachers will gradually build up the
momentum for learning and provide an overview of what the
discussion is all about)
Note: The teachers are highly encouraged to check the details in this
lesson guide to generate ideas and methods to properly discuss the
topics.
What is Matter?
Matter is anything that has weight and takes up space. This means
everything you can see or touch is made of matter!
There are three main forms of matter:
1. Solids: Like a rock. It has a definite shape.
2. Liquids: Like water in a cup. It takes the shape of its container
but has a set amount.
3. Gases: Like the air we breathe. Gases fill the space they’re in
and don’t have a definite shape.
Refer to this infographic:
Solids: Imagine holding a rock. It stays the same shape no matter
where it is.
Liquids: Think about water in a cup. (Hold a cup of water on camera if
possible.) The water changes shape depending on the cup it’s in, but it
has a specific amount.
Gases: Now, picture a balloon. (Show an inflated balloon on camera.)
When I blow it up, the air inside fills the balloon. It doesn’t have a
specific shape, but it takes up space in the balloon.
So remember, matter can be solid, liquid, or gas. Each type has its
special properties!
Hands-on Demonstration
Demonstration: Show examples of Matter
Now, let’s look at some examples of matter!
(I recommend having a few objects ready to show: a rock, a cup of
water, and a balloon.)
Here’s my rock. It’s a solid because it has a shape and doesn’t
change.
Here’s a cup of water. This is a liquid. (Tilt the cup slightly.) See
how it takes the shape of the cup?
And here’s my balloon. The air inside it is a gas. (Squeeze the
balloon gently.) It fills the space and can change shape.
Each of the objects helps us understand the three states of matter we
talked about!
Assessment: Answering few assessment test
The teachers will let the students answer the short assessment.
Activity: Draw Your Understanding
To wrap up our lesson, I’d love to see what you learned today! Grab
some paper and crayons. I’d like you to draw a picture of either a solid,
a liquid, or a gas and label it.
Points Breakdown (Total: 10 Points)
Completion of Drawing (4 points):
2 points for accurately drawing a recognizable representation of a
solid, liquid, or gas.
2 points for clearly labeling the drawing.
Creativity and Effort (2 points):
Points for effort and creativity in the drawing, including use of color and
detail.
Explanation During Sharing (4 points):
2 points for clearly explaining their choice (why they selected that item
as a solid, liquid, or gas).
2 points for listening and engaging with classmates during the sharing,
including asking questions or providing feedback.
(After a minute, invite students to share)
Now, who would like to tell us what they drew? You can share in the
chat or unmute to speak! Fantastic work today, everyone! You did an
amazing job learning about matter!
Summarization of the day’s discussion
The teachers will entertain question and clarifications about the
topics
Letting students summarize some learning/realizations
Reflection: What is the importance of Matter in our every day
life?
Students will be asked to share their learning and takeaways regarding
the tackled topics.
5E Instructional Procedures
Teacher’s Role Students Role
Engagement Before the lesson starts, the teacher
will play a motivational activity caled
“Scavenger Hunt” which will served as
the instrument to introduce the lesson
proper. At the start of the lesson, the
teacher will play to the entire class the
What is Matter? on YouTube, which
illustrate and introduce the the states of
Matter, tell the characteristics of each
state of matter, describe the changes in
the states of matter, and visualize the
particles of matter in each state in an
imaginative and interesting way.
Once the video Is over, the teacher will
conduct an open discussion about
Basic Concepts of Matter encourage
students to share what they know
about it. The teachers will gradually
build up the momentum for learning
and provide an overview of what the
discussion is all about.
