The Gift of the Magi by O Henry
The characterization of Della
Della is character in The Gift of the Magi story. The characterize of Della such as selfness,
sacrificial, and loving. She is selfness because she demonstrates great selflessness by putting Jim’s
needs and happiness above her own. Her selflessness is reflected in her readiness to make a personal
sacrifice without expecting anything in return. In the story said that She sells her hair for $20 to buy a
gift, thinking only of how happy Jim will be when he receives it, even though her hair was a source of
pride for her. Another one, she is sacrificial because she is willing to sacrifice her own needs for the
sake of her loved ones, as seen when she takes saving her money and she sells her hair to buy a gift for
Jim. This act shows how deeply she values her relationship with her husband, putting his happiness
above her own desires. Finally, she is loving because Della’s love for Jim is evident in her actions. She
cherishes her relationship with him so much that she sells her most prized possession, her long,
beautiful hair, to buy him a thoughtful gift. This shows how deeply she cares about Jim’s happiness,
putting him before herself. Example, Della sacrifices her hair, which is described as her crown of glory,
to buy a platinum fob chain for Jim’s watch, showing her deep affection for him.

The characterization of Jim


Jim is character in The Gift of the Magi story. The characterize of Jim such as devote and
thoughtful. She is devoted because Jim’s devotion to Della is shown through his willingness to
sacrifice his most valuable possession, he sells his watch, to buy combs for her hair. This reflects how
much he values their relationship and is willing to part with something dear for her sake. In the story
said that Jim sells the watch, a family heirloom passed down from his grandfather, to buy Della a set of
combs for her hair, which shows the depth of his love for her. Finally, Jim is a thoughtful husband,
carefully choosing a gift that he believes will make his wife happy. He puts significant effort into
finding something meaningful for her. Example, Jim buys Della a set of combs she had admired for a
long time, even though he has to sell his prized watch to afford them, demonstrating his thoughtful
nature in trying to bring her joy.
