What is the circulatory system?
-Circulatory system is to provide oxygen, nutrients and to
transport blood throughout your body.
-Another part of the circulatory system is to remove
waste from cells and organs so your body can dispose of it.

aquatic vertebrates and can
be found in both saline and
fresh water. The circulatory

throughout the body.

Icthyolohy
Gas Exchange
The circulatory system transports oxygen-rich blood
from the gills to the rest of the body and returns oxygen
-depleted blood to the gills for replenishment.
Nutrient Distribution
Providing the energy and building blocks necessary for
growth, repair, and metabolic processes.
Waste Removal
The circulatory system transports waste products, such
as carbon dioxide and nitrogenous compounds, to the
gills and kidneys for excretion.
Hormone Transport
The circulatory system transports hormones from their
production sites (e.g., endocrine glands) to their target
organs.
Temperature Regulation
By adjusting blood f low to different parts of the body, f is h
can maintain a relatively stable internal temperature.
Immune System
These cells help defend the f is h's body against pathogens
and foreign invaders.
The circulatory system of f ish is quite
simple and consists of
Blood
Heart
Blood Vessels
Fish blood
similar to that of any other vertebrates
consist of plasma and cellular componets
Cellular componets- red blood cells,
white blood cells and thrombocytes
Plasma- Liquid portion and consists
of water.
Red blood cells ( Erythrocytes)- The most abundant cells in
blood; they are produced in the bone marrow and contain a
protein called hemoglobin that carries oxygen to cells
White blood cells(Leucocytes)- they are part of the immune
system and destroy infections agents called pathogens.
Plasma- This is the yellowish liquid portion of blood that
contains electrolytes, nutrients and vitamins, hormones,
clotting factor, and proteins such as antibodies to f ig ht
infection.
Plateslets (Thrombocytes)- They clotting factors that are
carried in the plasma; they clot together in a process
called coagulation to seal a wound and prevent a loss of
blood.
Fish heart
Heart is a simple muscular structure that is located below
the pharynx and immediately behind the gills. It is enclosed
by the pericardial membrane or pericardium.
Fi sh hav e 2 c ham b ers, one atri um and one
ventricle.
A sac-like thin walled structure known as sinus
venosus and a tube, known as bulbus arteriosus.
The atrium
is the largest of the chambers and weakly
muscular. It pushes the blood, with weak
contractions in the ventricle.
The ventricle
is the only well muscled chamber, nearly as
large as the atrium it is the work horse of
the heart, its contractions drive the blood
around the body.
The sinus venosus
collects venous blood and delivers it to
the atrium.
The bulbus arteriosus
it maintains a steady blood f low into the
gill system through heart contraction.
Blood vessels - These are tubes or channel that carry
blood throughout thembody
The blood vessels are of two types, arteries and
Vein
veins.
The arteries
are responsible for carrying oxygenated blood from
the heart to the rest of the body.
Artery
The veins
return deoxygenated blood from the different parts
of the body to the heart.
Closed circulatory
system
Closed circulatory system
Fish have a closed circulatory
system with a hear t that
pumps blood around the body
in a single loop-from the heart
to the gills, from the gills to the
rest of the body, and then back
to the heart.
Closed circulatory systems have the blood closed at
all times within vessels of different size and wall
thickness. In this type of system, blood is pumped
by a heart through vessels, and does not normally
fill body cavities.
Single circulatory system
blood passes through the heart only once on
each circuit around the whole of the blood
circulatory system of the animal.
