ENGINEERING SCIENCE N4 TEST 1 REVISION

1.A locomotive of 668 Kw and a mass of 90 tonnes draws a train with a mass of 120 tonnes up an
incline of 1:90. The frictional resistance is 350 N/tonne. Calculate the maximum uniform
velocity of the train [5]
2.. A bucket of cement with a mass of 35 kg is hoisted up to a height of 45 m.
It accelerates with an acceleration of 1, 6 m/s 2. Determine the following:
2.1.1. The force needed to accelerate the bucket upwards [2]
2.1.2. The work done [2]
3.A steel ball with a mass of 12 kg is at rest on the top of the incline. The ball starts to roll down the
incline of 30 m with a slope of 1 in 25.
3.1. Calculate the loss in potential energy if it rolled 15 m. [3]
3.2. The speed of the ball after it rolled 30 m. [3]
4.A wheel with a diameter of 0,6 m has an angular acceleration of 37,704 rad/s2.
If the moment of inertia is 4 units, calculate the accelerating torque [2]
5. A lawnmower’s starter pulley has a diameter of 175 mm. The starting rope is wound 5 times
around the pulley. The rope is pulled with a force of 68 N for 1 second.
Calculate the:
5.1. Torque applied on the pulley [2]
5.2. The work done [2]
6. The flywheel of a motorcar rotates at 210 r/min. It is uniformly retarded to 25 r/min in 25 s.
