Proposed title: “The effect of classroom seating arrangement on student focus”

1. Context and Rationale: Study background

This study aims that the arrangement of desks in classrooms can impact
student attention. Teachers often use different setups, like rows or groups, to aid
various activities. Finding the best seating for high school students is important for
enhancing focus. This study will identify the seating arrangement that best improves
student concentration and learning.
Rohner, D. (2016): Rohner conducted a study examining the impact of seating
arrangements on student attention and task completion in a high school setting. The
results indicated that small-group clusters were more effective than traditional rows
or U-shaped arrangements in enhancing student focus.
Edwards, J. (2018): Edwards investigated the effects of seating arrangements
on student engagement and academic performance in elementary classrooms. The
study found that students seated in cooperative groups exhibited higher levels of
engagement and achieved better academic outcomes compared to those in
traditional rows.
Miller, B. (2020): Miller explored the relationship between seating
arrangements and student behavior in middle school classrooms. The findings
suggested that students seated in U-shaped arrangements were less likely to
engage in disruptive behaviours’ compared to those in traditional rows.

11. Action Research Question AR Questions

1.Do rows or groups help students focus better?
2. Which seating makes students participate more?
3. Does sitting close to the teacher improve attention?
4. How do seating arrangements affect distractions?
111. Proposed Innovation, Intervention Strategy Describe Innovation/ Intervention
Strategy
The plan is to try different seating arrangements in the classroom to see how
they affect student focus and engagement. This will include regularly changing
between rows, small groups, and U-shapes to find out which setup helps students
concentrate and participate the most. Simple tools like observation checklists and
self-assessments will measure how focused students are. The study will also test
how sitting close to the teacher affects attention. Feedback will be collected from
students and teachers about their experiences with the seating arrangements. The
information gathered will be analyzed to determine which arrangement works best
for focus and engagement. The goal is to create a better learning environment that
helps students pay attention and participate more in class.
To help students focus and learn better, we can try changing their seats in
class more often. This can make things more interesting, let students work together
better, and help everyone feel more comfortable.

IV. Action Research Methods ( Describe Action Research Methods)

a. Participants/ other sources of Data
the main participants are students, whose focus will be observed in different
seating arrangements. Teachers will share their thoughts on how seating affects
attention, and may give feedback.
b. Data Gathering Methods
In the study “The Effect of Classroom Seating Arrangement on Student
Focus,” different methods will be used to gather data. Classroom observations will
make up 40% of the data, focusing on how seating affects student behavior and
attention. Surveys and questionnaires will provide 20%, asking students and
teachers about their thoughts on seating. Academic performance records will
contribute 15%, looking at how seating might affect grades. Seating charts will make
up 10%, tracking where students sit. Finally, video recordings, making up 15% of the
data, will be used to analyze student focus and interactions, with permission.

Video Recordings 15%
c. Data Analysis Plan
The data analysis plan for the study “The Effect of Classroom Seating
Arrangement on Student Focus” includes organizing observations by seating
setup (rows, small groups, U-shapes) and noting student behavior. We will
compare quiz scores and assignment completion rates for each arrangement and
measure focus through behavior scores. We’ll analyze feedback from students
and teachers for common themes and cross-check findings for accuracy. Finally,
we will summarize the results and include charts in the report with conclusions
and recommendations for future seating arrangements.

V. Action Research Work Plan ( Summarize Action Research Work Plan)

The goal of the research “The Effect of Classroom Seating Arrangement on
Student Focus” is to find out how different seating setups affect student attention and
grades in high school.
The aim is to find which seating helps students focus better, how it affects
their grades, and to gather feedback from students and teachers. Data will be
collected by observing students, comparing quiz and assignment grades, and using
surveys. The study will last eight weeks: two weeks for setting up seating and
observing, three weeks for collecting grades, and two weeks for surveys. In the final
week, the data will be analyzed and the results shared. The goal is to find the best
seating arrangement and offer suggestions for better classroom seating.
VI. Cost Estimate ( Write cost estimate)
Materials:
Paper and printing for quizzes and surveys

VII. Plan for Dissemination and Utilization ( Describe how the results will be
shared)
The study results will be shared through conferences, journals, workshops,
and online. Teachers will be encouraged to use new seating arrangements to
improve student focus.
