Anyways, it is her job, not yours, you are just trying to be helpful.”

Scene 2: In the office, April having a conversation with her two other colleagues.

Chloe: Hi April, how are you? You look so tired. Is everything okay?

April: Yeah, “Not really. I am very distracted right now dealing with all workload that I have. I have a

feeling that I cannot finish it on time. Since our supervisor gave an additional paperwork that needs to be

done.

Chloe: “April, I think it is time you need to speak to her. It’s really giving you a hard time every time she

does this to you.

April:” I know right. But i am having second thought of telling this to her. I don’t want her to get

disappointed on me.”

Hope: “But I actually think that you do not have a choice at all April, so why not just carry on with the

work just as how you usually do it and make sure you finish them before the due date otherwise, our

supervisor might get frustrated especially on you.

Climax (Scene 3)

Scene 3: April confronted her supervisor about the task that she cannot do.

Elle: “Oh April. By the way, make sure to finish the paperwork that I gave you by tomorrow morning, I

really need that.

April: “Elle, actually, I really need to talk with you about the job you asked me to do.

Elle: “Don’t tell me that you cannot do it. I really need it this week that’s why I gave it to you ahead of

time.

April: “I understand Elle, and I am really sorry about that. but this time, it is really hard for me to do it as

I also have other papers that are also due this week.

Elle: “No April! I am telling you; I need the paperwork to be done by tomorrow morning. Otherwise, we

might change our plan of considering Chloe to be promoted instead of you. Besides, I don’t think you can

really afford to give up your dream to become our company’s assistant supervisor. Right? Just get it done

and make sure to hand it to me first thing in the morning tomorrow.

(Elle walked out and left April dispirited and confused.)

Falling Action (Scene 4)

Scene 4: Finally, April decided to bring the matter to their manager. April knocked on the Manager’s

office.

Franco: “Oh, hi April. How are you doing today? Please come on in. Is everything okay? How can I help

you?

April: About that... I really need to talk to you because this is really bothers me. Elle asked for my help

with her paperwork, and I really want to help her but I also have my own deadlines to finish. We already

discussed this before, and she got upset with me when I told her I couldn’t and she’s even saying it might

affect my chances for the position I applied since last year. I’ve worked hard and sacrifice a lot for that

position.

Franco: “I am very sorry to hear that April. Do you want me to call her now? So that the three of us can

talk about this matter? (Phoned Elle to come to the office).

Resolution (Scene 5)

Elle, came in the office and was surprised seeing April in the room.

Franco: “Elle, please have a seat. April told me about the paperwork that you asked her to do. You know

that as a supervisor, you are not allowed to misuse your position and take advantage of other company’s

employees. Also, you are not in the right position to decide for the company who can and cannot get

endorsement for the assistant supervisor position.

Elle: “I apologize Franco for my misconduct. Let me fix this myself.” (Elle turned to April) April, I am

sorry for putting you on this position. I know I should not have done it to you after all you have been so

helpful to me ever since. I promised that this will not happen again.

April: “Thank you so much for understanding me Elle.”

Moral Lesson (Lili) :

What happens when we use power against people? In this role play story, Elle portrays the wrong use of

authority that caused conflict in the workplace. Misused authority or power can also lead you to

destruction if not handled properly and wisely.

With April, she emphasized the criticality of having right perspective of yourself. Self- awareness is

essential in making rational and sound decisions.

And Franco as the manager, being the mediator of the 2 employees, shown professionalism and provided

successful resolution on their conflicts without any bias and to create a safe and healthy workplace.

Hope: Moral Lesson:

1. In the character of April- it is critical to have a right perspective of yourself regardless of the situation.

Evaluating and assessing yourself whether in the context of your weaknesses or strengths are some of the

vital roles of having the right discernment thus, self- awareness is essential in making rational and sound

decisions.

2. In the character or Elle- misemployed authority is dangerous particularly in the context of work.

Power- approach is one of the causes of many conflicts and this can be threatening and intimidating in

most cases. Seeking help from other colleagues is not an issue as long as it is dealt in a more respectful

attitude and amiable way. Also, do not be enticed with what power can offer you. Misused authority or

power can also lead you to destruction if not handled properly and wisely.

3. In the character of Franco as a Manager- As a leader, it is importance to have the right skills and

strategies to be able to set the emotional state of other workers. Having healthy emotional intelligence, is

necessary to be able to communicate effectively. More so, to be able to have a successful resolution to the

issue, it is essential to gather all the needed data and information from both parties before establishing a

possible solution. Commending all the positive actions and discouraging all the negative behaviour are

also helpful to have a healthy and safe workplace.

Power dynamics significantly affect employee relationships by establishing a hierarchy that can lead to misuse if not managed correctly. In the scenario, Elle's authority over April creates a power imbalance where April feels compelled to meet unreasonable demands due to fear of negative repercussions on her career aspirations . This coercive atmosphere strains relationships and decreases trust among employees, illustrating how unchecked power can disrupt workplace harmony and productivity .

Franco embodies fairness and ethical leadership by addressing the conflict between April and Elle impartially and without bias. His decision to involve both parties in a discussion illustrates a commitment to transparency and fairness, offering both April and Elle an opportunity to voice their perspectives . By reprimanding Elle's misuse of power, Franco upholds the values of ethical leadership, establishing a precedent for respectful and just interactions within the workplace, which fosters trust and cooperation among team members .

Power-based approaches in conflict management, as shown in the scenario, have significant risks, including potential abuse of power, intimidation, reduced employee morale, and strained relationships. Elle's use of authority pressures April, leading to workplace tension and dissatisfaction . However, when managed properly, power can facilitate efficient decision-making and uphold organizational order. Franco's balanced approach in addressing the misuse of power exemplifies how structured authority can effectively mediate conflicts and ensure a fair resolution without exploitation .

The misuse of authority contributes to workplace conflict by creating an environment where power is used to intimidate or coerce employees. In the role play script, Elle misuses her authority by pressuring April to complete tasks outside of her job scope with threats regarding her promotion prospects, creating an undue burden on April and fostering a sense of unfairness and resentment . This misuse can lead to a toxic work environment, decreased morale, and lower productivity .

Franco’s role as a mediator is pivotal as he facilitates a constructive dialogue between April and Elle. By calling a meeting, Franco demonstrates leadership by addressing the power imbalance and providing a safe space for April to express her concerns without fear of repercussion . His unbiased approach and emphasis on professionalism deescalate the situation, allowing for a resolution that acknowledges the misuse of authority and sets clear expectations for future conduct .

The role-play script highlights the importance of addressing workplace demands and setting personal boundaries to maintain mental well-being. April's struggle to cope with excessive work pressure illustrates the detrimental effect on her mental state, leading her to feel exhausted and anxious . Her eventual decision to communicate her limitations to her superiors underscores the need for employees to set boundaries to preserve their mental health and avoid burnout .

The narrative suggests strategies such as effective communication, leadership intervention, and promoting a culture of fairness and respect for creating a healthier work environment. Franco's intervention as a mediator and his emphasis on professionalism indicate that open communication and addressing grievances can prevent conflicts from escalating . Encouraging ethical behavior and accountability, as demonstrated through Franco's actions, fosters an atmosphere of mutual respect and collaboration, essential for a supportive workplace .

Self-awareness plays a crucial role in decision-making as it allows individuals to assess their own strengths and limitations, thereby making more informed and rational choices. April's character illustrates this when she reflects on her workload and realizes she cannot sustainably take on additional responsibilities. This awareness empowers her to confront her supervisor and seek a resolution, highlighting the importance of understanding one's capabilities to make sound decisions .

April's character development reflects themes of empowerment and resilience as she moves from feeling overwhelmed by her supervisor's demands to taking proactive steps to address them. Initially, April is hesitant to confront her supervisor due to the fear of disappointing her and jeopardizing her career advancement . However, her decision to speak up demonstrates her resilience and empowerment, ultimately leading to a resolution that validates her concerns and restores her agency within the workplace .

The moral lessons conveyed include the importance of self-awareness and integrity in the workplace (April), the dangers of authority misuse (Elle), and the need for fairness and professionalism in conflict resolution (Franco). April's self-awareness allows her to navigate challenges effectively, while Elle's actions illustrate how power can corrupt if not checked. Franco emphasizes the significance of ethical leadership by resolving conflicts fairly and promoting a supportive work environment .
