Henry Walter is known as the father of the
Indian Census.
The Census was first started under British
Viceroy Lord Mayo in 1872.
The first synchronous census was taken
under British rule on 1881 , Lord Ripon
was Viceroy of India.

The information collected during the
population Census is so confidential that it
is not even accessible to the courts of law.
The first census of Independent India was
conducted in 1951. It was also the first census

the country since 1872 and the 7th after
Independence.
