SAFE WORK PROCEDURE
TYRE REPAIR
This procedure will be carried out only by authorised personnel trained in tyre repair .
Before Starting Work:
1. Ensure all personnel have the minimum PPE, which in addition to the plant standard
includes General Work Gloves.
2. Ensure adequate lighting is available. At night, the flashing beacon on the truck is to be
activated together with the hazard lights.
Removing and Replacing tyres:
1. Isolate the truck ignition system using the LOTO process. Keys are to be kept by the person
conducting the maintenance.
2. Chock the wheels using a chain and LOTO lock to secure the chocks in place.
3. Only one tyre is to be replaced at any one time.
4. The specified jacks are to be used to lift the axle from the ground to remove the tyre.
5. Under no circumstances is any heat to be applied to, or near, inflated tyres as there remains
a high risk of tyre explosion.
6. Retreaded tyres are only to be fixed to the rear of the vehicle.
Removing and Replacing Tyres from Rim:
1. Manual handling techniques are to be used for moving tyres into a location for change. For
lifting tyres off the floor, lift should be done as a team effort.
2. Only trained operators are to use the tyre-changing machines.
3. The tyre-changing machine is to be operated by the manufacturer's specifications.
4. Due to the nature of the moving parts of the tyre-changing machine, no person other than
the operator should remain within 1.5 meters of the machine while it is in operation.
Inflation of tyres:
1. Manual handling techniques are to be used for moving tyres into locations for inflation. For
lifting tyres off the floor.
2. Tyres are only to be inflated in the designed inflation cages. The cage is to be securely
closed when in use.

3. The Tyreman is to monitor the pressure of the tyre, using the supplied pressure gauges, to
prevent overinflation and possible explosion.
